A Question about David’s Son^(A)

⁴¹ While the Pharisees were still^[a] gathered, Jesus asked them, ⁴² “What do you think about the Messiah?^[b] Whose son is he?”

They told him, “David’s.”

⁴³ He asked them, “Then how can David by the Spirit call him ‘Lord’ when he says,

⁴⁵ If David calls him ‘Lord’, how can he be his son?”

⁴⁶ No one could answer him at all,^[e] and from that day on no one dared to ask him another question.

⁴¹ Then he asked them, “How can people^[a] say that the Messiah^[b] is David’s son? ⁴² Because David himself in the book of Psalms says,

⁴⁴ So David calls him ‘Lord.’ Then how can he be his son?”
