A Question about David’s Son(A)

41 While the Pharisees were still[a] gathered, Jesus asked them, 42 “What do you think about the Messiah?[b] Whose son is he?”

They told him, “David’s.”

43 He asked them, “Then how can David by the Spirit call him ‘Lord’ when he says,

44 ‘The Lord[c] told my Lord,
    “Sit at my right hand,
        until I put your enemies under your feet.”’?[d]

45 If David calls him ‘Lord’, how can he be his son?”

46 No one could answer him at all,[e] and from that day on no one dared to ask him another question.

35 While Jesus was teaching in the Temple, he asked, “How can the scribes say that the Messiah[a] is David’s son? 36 David himself said by the Holy Spirit,

‘The Lord[b] told my Lord,
    “Sit at my right hand,
        until I put your enemies under your feet.”’[c]

37 David himself calls him ‘Lord,’ so how can he be his son?” And the large crowd kept listening to him with delight.
