Seven Woes to the Scribes and Pharisees

23 Then Jesus ^(A)said to the crowds and to his disciples, ^2 (B)“The scribes and the Pharisees ^(C)sit on Moses' seat,

^5 (A)They do all their deeds ^(B)to be seen by others. For they make ^(C)their phylacteries broad and ^(D)their fringes long, ⁶ and they ^(E)love the place of honour at feasts and ^(F)the best seats in the synagogues ⁷ and ^(G)greetings in ^(H)the market-places and being called ^(I)rabbi^[a] by others.

Beware of the Scribes

^38 (A)And in his teaching he said, “Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes and like greetings in the market-places ³⁹ and have the best seats in the synagogues and ^(B)the places of honour at feasts,

⁴³ Woe to you Pharisees! For ^(A)you love the best seat in the synagogues and greetings in the market-places.
