The Anointing at Bethany

While Jesus was in Bethany at the house of Simon,(A) a man who had a serious skin disease, a woman approached Him with an alabaster jar of very expensive fragrant oil. She poured it on His head as He was reclining at the table. When the disciples(B) saw it, they were indignant. “Why this waste?” they asked. “This might have been sold for a great deal and given to the poor.”

10 But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a noble thing for Me. 11 You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have Me.(C) 12 By pouring this fragrant oil on My body, she has prepared Me for burial. 13 I assure you: Wherever this gospel(D) is proclaimed in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told in memory of her.”

The Anointing at Bethany

While(A) He was in Bethany(B) at the house of Simon who had a serious skin disease,(C) as He was reclining at the table,(D) a woman came with an alabaster jar of pure and expensive fragrant oil of nard. She broke the jar and poured it on His head.(E) But some were expressing indignation to one another: “Why has this fragrant oil been wasted? For this oil might have been sold for more than 300 denarii(F) and given to the poor.”(G) And they began to scold her.

Then Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why are you bothering her? She has done a noble thing(H) for Me. You always have the poor(I) with you, and you can do what is good for them whenever you want, but you do not always have Me.(J) She has done what she could; she has anointed My body(K) in advance for burial.(L) I assure you:(M) Wherever the gospel(N) is proclaimed in the whole world,(O) what this woman has done will also be told in memory of her.”
