Jesus Is Mocked
27 Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into [a]the Praetorium, and they gathered the whole Roman cohort around Him.(A) 28 They stripped him and put a scarlet [b]robe on Him [as a king’s robe]. 29 And after twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and put a reed in His right hand [as a scepter]. Kneeling before Him, they ridiculed Him, saying, “Hail (rejoice), King of the Jews!” 30 They spat on Him, and took the reed and struck Him repeatedly on the head.

16 The soldiers led Him away into the palace (that is, the [a]Praetorium), and they called together the entire [Roman] battalion [of 600 soldiers].(A) 17 They dressed Him up in [a ranking Roman officer’s robe of] purple, and after twisting [together] a crown of thorns, they placed it on Him; 18 and they began saluting and mocking Him: “Hail, King of the Jews!” 19 They kept beating Him on the head with a [b]reed and spitting on Him, and kneeling and bowing in [mock] homage to Him.(B)
