¹¹ “As for me, ^(A)I baptize you ^[a]with water for repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, and I am not fit to remove His sandals; ^(B)He will baptize you ^[b]with the Holy Spirit and fire.

The Baptism of Jesus

^13 (A)Then Jesus *arrived ^(B)from Galilee at the Jordan, coming to John to be baptized by him. ¹⁴ But John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I have the need to be baptized by You, and yet You are coming to me?” ¹⁵ But Jesus, answering, said to him, “Allow it at this time; for in this way it is fitting for us ^(C)to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he *allowed Him. ¹⁶ After He was baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and ^[a](D)he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and ^[b]settling on Him,

⁵ And all the country of Judea was going out to him, and all the people of Jerusalem; and they were being baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins.

²⁵ They asked him, and said to him, “Why then are you baptizing, if you are not the ^[a]Christ, nor Elijah, nor ^(A)the Prophet?” ²⁶ John answered them, saying, “^(B)I baptize ^[b]in water, but among you stands One whom you do not know.

²³ Now John also was baptizing in Aenon, near Salim, because there was an abundance of water there; and people were coming and being baptized—

⁵ for ^(A)John baptized ^[a]with water, but you will be baptized ^[b]with the Holy Spirit ^[c](B)not many days from now.”

³⁸ Peter said to them, “^(A)Repent, and each of you be ^(B)baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. ³⁹ For ^(C)the promise is for you and your children and for all who are ^(D)far away, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself.” ⁴⁰ And with many other words he solemnly ^(E)testified and kept on urging them, saying, “^[a]Be saved from this ^(F)perverse generation!” ⁴¹ So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and that day there were added about three thousand ^[b](G)souls.

³⁷ you yourselves know the thing that happened throughout Judea, starting from Galilee, after the baptism which John proclaimed.
