The Temptation of Jesus

4 Then^(A) Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the Devil.^(B)

¹⁰ Then Jesus told him, “Go away,^[a] Satan! For it is written:

⁴⁴ You are of your father the Devil,^(A) and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer^(B) from the beginning^(C) and has not stood in the truth,^(D) because there is no truth in him. When he tells a lie, he speaks from his own nature,^[a] because he is a liar and the father of liars.^[b]

¹⁰ and said, “You son of the Devil,^(A) full of all deceit and all fraud, enemy of all righteousness! Won’t you ever stop perverting the straight paths^(B) of the Lord?
