¹² Therefore, whatever you want others to do for you, do also the same for them—this is the Law and the Prophets.^[a](A)

The Two Foundations

²⁴ “Therefore,^(A) everyone who hears these words^(B) of Mine and acts on them will be like a sensible man who built his house on the rock. ²⁵ The rain fell, the rivers rose, and the winds blew and pounded that house. Yet it didn’t collapse, because its foundation was on the rock. ²⁶ But everyone who hears these words of Mine and doesn’t act on them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. ²⁷ The rain fell, the rivers rose, the winds blew and pounded that house, and it collapsed. And its collapse was great!”

²⁸ When Jesus had finished this sermon,^[a](C) the crowds were astonished at His teaching,^{(D) 29} because He was teaching them like one who had authority, and not like their scribes.

¹⁷ “Why do you ask Me about what is good?”^[a] He said to him. “There is only One who is good.^[b] If you want to enter into life, keep the commandments.”^(A)

¹⁸ “Which ones?” he asked Him. Jesus answered:

²⁰ “I have kept all these,”^[d] the young man told Him. “What do I still lack?”

²¹ “If you want to be perfect,”^[e] Jesus said to him, “go, sell your belongings and give to the poor,^(D) and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow Me.”

³⁶ “Teacher, which command in the law is the greatest?”^[a]

³⁷ He said to him, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.^{(A)[b] 38} This is the greatest and most important^[c] command. ³⁹ The second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.^{(B)[d] 40} All the Law and the Prophets depend^[e] on these two commands.”^(C)

²⁰ teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember,^[a] I am with you always,^[b] to the end of the age.”^(A)
