1 These are the memoirs of Nehemiah son of Hacaliah.
Nehemiah’s Concern for Jerusalem
In late autumn, in the month of Kislev, in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes’ reign,[a] I was at the fortress of Susa. 2 Hanani, one of my brothers, came to visit me with some other men who had just arrived from Judah. I asked them about the Jews who had returned there from captivity and about how things were going in Jerusalem.
3 They said to me, “Things are not going well for those who returned to the province of Judah. They are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem has been torn down, and the gates have been destroyed by fire.”
4 When I heard this, I sat down and wept. In fact, for days I mourned, fasted, and prayed to the God of heaven. 5 Then I said,
“O Lord, God of heaven, the great and awesome God who keeps his covenant of unfailing love with those who love him and obey his commands, 6 listen to my prayer! Look down and see me praying night and day for your people Israel. I confess that we have sinned against you. Yes, even my own family and I have sinned! 7 We have sinned terribly by not obeying the commands, decrees, and regulations that you gave us through your servant Moses.
8 “Please remember what you told your servant Moses: ‘If you are unfaithful to me, I will scatter you among the nations. 9 But if you return to me and obey my commands and live by them, then even if you are exiled to the ends of the earth,[b] I will bring you back to the place I have chosen for my name to be honored.’
10 “The people you rescued by your great power and strong hand are your servants. 11 O Lord, please hear my prayer! Listen to the prayers of those of us who delight in honoring you. Please grant me success today by making the king favorable to me.[c] Put it into his heart to be kind to me.”
In those days I was the king’s cup-bearer.

A number of dates in the book of Nehemiah can be cross-checked with dates in surviving Persian records and related accurately to our modern calendar. This month of the ancient Hebrew lunar calendar occurred within the months of November and December 446 B.c. The twentieth year probably refers to the reign of King Artaxerxes I; compare 2:1; 5:14.

A fines del otoño, en el mes de quisleu, del año veinte del reinado del rey Artajerjes,[a] me encontraba en la fortaleza de Susa. 2 Hananí, uno de mis hermanos, vino a visitarme con algunos hombres que acababan de llegar de Judá. Les pregunté por los judíos que habían regresado del cautiverio y sobre la situación en Jerusalén.
3 Me dijeron: «Las cosas no andan bien. Los que regresaron a la provincia de Judá tienen grandes dificultades y viven en desgracia. La muralla de Jerusalén fue derribada, y las puertas fueron consumidas por el fuego».
4 Cuando oí esto, me senté a llorar. De hecho, durante varios días estuve de duelo, ayuné y oré al Dios del cielo, 5 y dije:
«Oh Señor, Dios del cielo, Dios grande y temible que cumples tu pacto de amor inagotable con los que te aman y obedecen tus mandatos, 6 ¡escucha mi oración! Mírame y verás que oro día y noche por tu pueblo Israel. Confieso que hemos pecado contra ti. ¡Es cierto, incluso mi propia familia y yo hemos pecado! 7 Hemos pecado terriblemente al no haber obedecido los mandatos, los decretos y las ordenanzas que nos diste por medio de tu siervo Moisés.
8 »Te suplico que recuerdes lo que le dijiste a tu siervo Moisés: “Si me son infieles los dispersaré entre las naciones; 9 pero si vuelven a mí y obedecen mis mandatos y viven conforme a ellos, entonces aunque se encuentren desterrados en los extremos más lejanos de la tierra,[b] yo los volveré a traer al lugar que elegí para que mi nombre sea honrado”.
10 »El pueblo que rescataste con tu gran poder y mano fuerte es tu siervo. 11 ¡Oh Señor, te suplico que oigas mi oración! Escucha las oraciones de aquellos quienes nos deleitamos en darte honra. Te suplico que hoy me concedas éxito y hagas que el rey me dé su favor.[c] Pon en su corazón el deseo de ser bondadoso conmigo».
En esos días yo era el copero del rey.

Nehemiah’s Prayer
1 The words of Nehemiah son of Hakaliah:
In the month of Kislev(A) in the twentieth year, while I was in the citadel of Susa,(B) 2 Hanani,(C) one of my brothers, came from Judah with some other men, and I questioned them about the Jewish remnant(D) that had survived the exile, and also about Jerusalem.
3 They said to me, “Those who survived the exile and are back in the province are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire.(E)”
4 When I heard these things, I sat down and wept.(F) For some days I mourned and fasted(G) and prayed before the God of heaven. 5 Then I said:
“Lord, the God of heaven, the great and awesome God,(H) who keeps his covenant of love(I) with those who love him and keep his commandments, 6 let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear(J) the prayer(K) your servant is praying before you day and night for your servants, the people of Israel. I confess(L) the sins we Israelites, including myself and my father’s family, have committed against you. 7 We have acted very wickedly(M) toward you. We have not obeyed the commands, decrees and laws you gave your servant Moses.
8 “Remember(N) the instruction you gave your servant Moses, saying, ‘If you are unfaithful, I will scatter(O) you among the nations, 9 but if you return to me and obey my commands, then even if your exiled people are at the farthest horizon, I will gather(P) them from there and bring them to the place I have chosen as a dwelling for my Name.’(Q)
10 “They are your servants and your people, whom you redeemed by your great strength and your mighty hand.(R) 11 Lord, let your ear be attentive(S) to the prayer of this your servant and to the prayer of your servants who delight in revering your name. Give your servant success today by granting him favor(T) in the presence of this man.”
I was cupbearer(U) to the king.
