17 They refused to listen,
And (A)did not remember Your wondrous deeds which You did among them;
So they became stiff-necked and (B)gave themselves a chief to return to their slavery [a]in Egypt.
But You are a God (C)of lavish forgiveness,
Gracious and compassionate,
Slow to anger and abounding in lovingkindness;
And You did not forsake them.
18 Even when they (D)made for themselves
A molten calf
And said, ‘This is your God
Who brought you up from Egypt,’
And [b]committed great [c]blasphemies,
19 (E)But You, in Your abundant compassion,
Did not forsake them in the wilderness;
(F)The pillar of cloud did not depart from them by day,
To lead them on their way,
Nor the pillar of fire by night,
To light for them the way in which they were to go.

17 They refused to listen and failed to remember(A) the miracles(B) you performed among them. They became stiff-necked(C) and in their rebellion appointed a leader in order to return to their slavery.(D) But you are a forgiving God,(E) gracious and compassionate,(F) slow to anger(G) and abounding in love.(H) Therefore you did not desert them,(I) 18 even when they cast for themselves an image of a calf(J) and said, ‘This is your god, who brought you up out of Egypt,’ or when they committed awful blasphemies.(K)

19 “Because of your great compassion you did not abandon(L) them in the wilderness. By day the pillar of cloud(M) did not fail to guide them on their path, nor the pillar of fire by night to shine on the way they were to take.
