(A)“And you saw the affliction of our fathers in Egypt and heard (B)their cry at the Red Sea, 10 (C)and performed signs and wonders against Pharaoh and all his servants and all the people of his land, for you knew that (D)they acted arrogantly against our fathers. And (E)you made a name for yourself, as it is to this day. 11 (F)And you divided the sea before them, so that they went through the midst of the sea on dry land, and you cast their pursuers into the depths, (G)as a stone into mighty waters. 12 By (H)a pillar of cloud you led them in the day, and by a pillar of fire in the night to light for them the way in which they should go. 13 (I)You came down on Mount Sinai (J)and spoke with them from heaven and gave them (K)right rules and true laws, good statutes and commandments, 14 (L)and you made known to them your holy Sabbath and commanded them commandments and statutes and a law by Moses your servant. 15 (M)You gave them bread from heaven for their hunger and (N)brought water for them out of the rock for their thirst, and you (O)told them to go in to possess the land that you had sworn to give them.

12 In the sight of their fathers (A)he performed wonders
    in the land of Egypt, in (B)the fields of Zoan.
13 He (C)divided the sea and let them pass through it,
    and made the waters (D)stand like a heap.
14 (E)In the daytime he led them with a cloud,
    and all the night with a fiery light.
15 He (F)split rocks in the wilderness
    and gave them drink abundantly as from the deep.
16 He made streams come out of (G)the rock
    and caused waters to flow down like rivers.

17 Yet they sinned still more against him,
    (H)rebelling against the Most High in the desert.
18 They (I)tested God in their heart
    by demanding the food they craved.
19 They spoke against God, saying,
    (J)“Can God (K)spread a table in the wilderness?
20 (L)He struck the rock so that water gushed out
    and streams overflowed.
Can he also give bread
    or provide meat for his people?”

21 Therefore, when the Lord heard, he was full of wrath;
    (M)a fire was kindled against Jacob;
    his anger rose against Israel,
22 because they (N)did not believe in God
    and did not trust his saving power.
23 Yet he commanded the skies above
    and (O)opened the doors of heaven,
24 and he (P)rained down on them manna to eat
    and gave them (Q)the grain of heaven.
25 Man ate of the bread of (R)the angels;
    he sent them food (S)in abundance.
26 He (T)caused the east wind to blow in the heavens,
    and by his power he led out the south wind;
27 he rained meat on them like (U)dust,
    winged birds like (V)the sand of the seas;
28 he (W)let them fall in the midst of their camp,
    all around their dwellings.

42 They (A)did not remember his power[a]
    or the day when he redeemed them from the foe,
43 (B)when he performed his (C)signs in Egypt
    and his (D)marvels in (E)the fields of Zoan.
44 He (F)turned their rivers to blood,
    so that they could not drink of their streams.
45 He sent among them swarms of (G)flies, which devoured them,
    and (H)frogs, which destroyed them.
46 He gave their crops to (I)the destroying locust
    and the fruit of their labor to the locust.
47 He destroyed their vines with (J)hail
    and their sycamores with frost.
48 He gave over their (K)cattle to the hail
    and their flocks to thunderbolts.
49 He let loose on them his burning anger,
    wrath, indignation, and distress,
    a company of (L)destroying angels.
50 He made a path for his anger;
    he did not spare them from death,
    but gave their lives over to the plague.
51 He struck down every (M)firstborn in Egypt,
    the firstfruits of their strength in the tents of (N)Ham.
52 Then he led out his people (O)like sheep
    and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.
53 (P)He led them in safety, so that they (Q)were not afraid,
    but (R)the sea overwhelmed their enemies.

Footnotes

  1. Psalm 78:42 Hebrew hand

Our fathers, when they were in Egypt,
    did not consider your wondrous works;
they (A)did not remember the abundance of your steadfast love,
    but (B)rebelled by the sea, at the Red Sea.
Yet he saved them (C)for his name's sake,
    (D)that he might make known his mighty power.
He (E)rebuked the Red Sea, and it (F)became dry,
    and he (G)led them through the deep as through a desert.
10 So he (H)saved them from the hand of the foe
    and (I)redeemed them from the power of the enemy.
11 And (J)the waters covered their adversaries;
    not one of them was left.
12 Then (K)they believed his words;
    they (L)sang his praise.
