Penalty for Violating the Sabbath^(A)

³² Now while the children of Israel were in the wilderness, ^(B)they found a man gathering sticks on the Sabbath day.

¹⁹ So it was, at the gates of Jerusalem, as it ^(A)began to be dark before the Sabbath, that I commanded the gates to be shut, and charged that they must not be opened till after the Sabbath. ^(B)Then I posted some of my servants at the gates, so that no burdens would be brought in on the Sabbath day.

⁹ And immediately the man was made well, took up his bed, and walked.

And ^(A)that day was the Sabbath. ¹⁰ The Jews therefore said to him who was cured, “It is the Sabbath; ^(B)it is not lawful for you to carry your bed.”

¹¹ He answered them, “He who made me well said to me, ‘Take up your bed and walk.’ ”

¹² Then they asked him, “Who is the Man who said to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk’?”

¹⁷ But Jesus answered them, ^(A)“My Father has been working until now, and I have been working.”

^22 (A)Moses therefore gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, ^(B)but from the fathers), and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath. ²³ If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath, so that the law of Moses should not be broken, are you angry with Me because ^(C)I made a man completely well on the Sabbath? ^24 (D)Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.”
