18 But Edom said to him, “You shall not pass through, or we will come out with the sword against you.” 19 The Israelites said to him, “We will stay on the highway, and if we drink of your water, we and our livestock, then we will pay for it. It is only a small matter; just let us pass through on foot.”(A) 20 But he said, “You shall not pass through.” And Edom came out against them with a large force, heavily armed. 21 Thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through their territory, so Israel turned away from them.(B)

18 But Edom(A) answered:
“You may not pass through here; if you try, we will march out and attack you with the sword.(B)”
19 The Israelites replied:
“We will go along the main road, and if we or our livestock(C) drink any of your water, we will pay for it.(D) We only want to pass through on foot—nothing else.”
20 Again they answered:
“You may not pass through.(E)”
Then Edom(F) came out against them with a large and powerful army. 21 Since Edom refused to let them go through their territory,(G) Israel turned away from them.(H)

19 And the children of Israel said unto him, We will go by the high way: and if I and my cattle drink of thy water, then I will pay for it: I will only, without doing anything else, go through on my feet.
20 And he said, Thou shalt not go through. And Edom came out against him with much people, and with a strong hand.
21 Thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his border: wherefore Israel turned away from him.
