23 But Sihon did not permit Israel to pass through his border; he[a] gathered all his forces[b] together and went out against Israel into the wilderness. When[c] he came to Jahaz, he fought against Israel. 24 But the Israelites[d] defeated him in battle[e] and took possession of his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, as far as the Ammonites, for the border of the Ammonites was strongly defended. 25 So Israel took all these cities; and Israel settled in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all its villages.[f]

When he reached Jahaz,(B) he fought with Israel.(C) 24 Israel, however, put him to the sword(D) and took over his land(E) from the Arnon to the Jabbok,(F) but only as far as the Ammonites,(G) because their border was fortified. 25 Israel captured all the cities of the Amorites(H) and occupied them,(I) including Heshbon(J) and all its surrounding settlements.
