Therefore, my brothers,[a] whom I love and (A)long for, (B)my joy and (C)crown, (D)stand firm thus in the Lord, my beloved.

Exhortation, Encouragement, and Prayer

I entreat Euodia and I entreat Syntyche to (E)agree in the Lord. Yes, I ask you also, true companion,[b] help these women, who have labored[c] side by side with me in the gospel together with Clement and the rest of my fellow workers, (F)whose names are in the book of life.

(G)Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness[d] be known to everyone. (H)The Lord is at hand; (I)do not be anxious about anything, (J)but in everything by prayer and supplication (K)with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And (L)the peace of God, (M)which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned[e] and (N)received and heard and seen (O)in me—practice these things, and (P)the God of peace will be with you.

God's Provision

10 I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that now at length (Q)you have revived your concern for me. You were indeed concerned for me, but you had no opportunity. 11 Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be (R)content. 12 I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and (S)hunger, abundance and (T)need. 13 I can do all things (U)through him who strengthens me.

14 Yet it was kind of you (V)to share[f] my trouble. 15 And you Philippians yourselves know that (W)in the beginning of the gospel, when I left Macedonia, (X)no church entered into partnership with me in giving and receiving, except you only. 16 Even in Thessalonica you sent me help for my needs once and again. 17 (Y)Not that I seek the gift, but I seek (Z)the fruit that increases to your credit.[g] 18 I have received full payment, and more. I am well supplied, (AA)having received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent, (AB)a fragrant offering, (AC)a sacrifice acceptable and pleasing to God. 19 And my God (AD)will supply every need of yours (AE)according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. 20 To (AF)our God and Father be (AG)glory forever and ever. The Preeminence of Christ

Paul's Ministry to the Church

I say this in order (DR)that no one may delude you with plausible arguments. For (DS)though I am absent in body, yet I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see your (DT)good order and (DU)the firmness of your faith in Christ.

Alive in Christ

(DV)Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, (DW)rooted and (DX)built up in him and (DY)established in the faith, just (DZ)as you were taught, abounding (EA)in thanksgiving.

See to it that no one takes you captive by (EB)philosophy and (EC)empty deceit, according to (ED)human tradition, according to the (EE)elemental spirits[o] of the world, and not according to Christ. For (EF)in him the whole fullness of deity dwells (EG)bodily, 10 and (EH)you have been filled in him, who is (EI)the head of all rule and authority. 11 In him also (EJ)you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by (EK)putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, 12 (EL)having been buried with him in baptism, in which (EM)you were also raised with him through faith in (EN)the powerful working of God, (EO)who raised him from the dead. 13 (EP)And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God (EQ)made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, 14 by (ER)canceling (ES)the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. Let No One Disqualify You

16 Therefore let no one (EW)pass judgment on you (EX)in questions of food and drink, or with regard to (EY)a festival or (EZ)a new moon or a Sabbath. 17 (FA)These are a shadow of the things to come, but (FB)the substance belongs to Christ. 18 Let no one (FC)disqualify you, (FD)insisting on asceticism and worship of angels, (FE)going on in detail about visions,[r] (FF)puffed up without reason by (FG)his sensuous mind, 19 and (FH)not (FI)holding fast to the Head, from whom the whole body, nourished and knit together through its joints and ligaments, grows with a growth that is from God.

20 If with Christ (FJ)you died to the (FK)elemental spirits of the world, (FL)why, as if you were still alive in the world, do you submit to regulations— 21 (FM)“Do not handle, Do not taste, Do not touch” 22 ((FN)referring to things that all perish as they are used)—according to (FO)human precepts and teachings? 23 These have indeed an appearance of wisdom in (FP)promoting self-made religion and asceticism and severity to the body, but they are (FQ)of no value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh.

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice.(L) And the God of peace(M) will be with you.

Thanks for Their Gifts

The Supremacy of the Son of God

Paul’s Labor for the Church

24 Now I rejoice(CS) in what I am suffering for you, and I fill up in my flesh what is still lacking in regard to Christ’s afflictions,(CT) for the sake of his body, which is the church.(CU) 25 I have become its servant(CV) by the commission God gave me(CW) to present to you the word of God(CX) in its fullness— 26 the mystery(CY) that has been kept hidden for ages and generations, but is now disclosed to the Lord’s people. 27 To them God has chosen to make known(CZ) among the Gentiles the glorious riches(DA) of this mystery, which is Christ in you,(DB) the hope of glory.

28 He is the one we proclaim, admonishing(DC) and teaching everyone with all wisdom,(DD) so that we may present everyone fully mature(DE) in Christ. 29 To this end I strenuously(DF) contend(DG) with all the energy Christ so powerfully works in me.(DH)

I want you to know how hard I am contending(DI) for you and for those at Laodicea,(DJ) and for all who have not met me personally. My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart(DK) and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery(DL) of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.(DM) I tell you this so that no one may deceive you by fine-sounding arguments.(DN) For though I am absent from you in body, I am present with you in spirit(DO) and delight to see how disciplined(DP) you are and how firm(DQ) your faith in Christ(DR) is.

Spiritual Fullness in Christ

So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord,(DS) continue to live your lives in him, rooted(DT) and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught,(DU) and overflowing with thankfulness.

See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy,(DV) which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces[i] of this world(DW) rather than on Christ.

For in Christ all the fullness(DX) of the Deity lives in bodily form, 10 and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head(DY) over every power and authority.(DZ) 11 In him you were also circumcised(EA) with a circumcision not performed by human hands. Your whole self ruled by the flesh[j](EB) was put off when you were circumcised by[k] Christ, 12 having been buried with him in baptism,(EC) in which you were also raised with him(ED) through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.(EE)

13 When you were dead in your sins(EF) and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you[l] alive(EG) with Christ. He forgave us all our sins,(EH) 14 having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness,(EI) which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross.(EJ) 15 And having disarmed the powers and authorities,(EK) he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them(EL) by the cross.[m]

Freedom From Human Rules

16 Therefore do not let anyone judge you(EM) by what you eat or drink,(EN) or with regard to a religious festival,(EO) a New Moon celebration(EP) or a Sabbath day.(EQ) 17 These are a shadow of the things that were to come;(ER) the reality, however, is found in Christ. 18 Do not let anyone who delights in false humility(ES) and the worship of angels disqualify you.(ET) Such a person also goes into great detail about what they have seen; they are puffed up with idle notions by their unspiritual mind. 19 They have lost connection with the head,(EU) from whom the whole body,(EV) supported and held together by its ligaments and sinews, grows as God causes it to grow.(EW)

20 Since you died with Christ(EX) to the elemental spiritual forces of this world,(EY) why, as though you still belonged to the world, do you submit to its rules:(EZ) 21 “Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!”? 22 These rules, which have to do with things that are all destined to perish(FA) with use, are based on merely human commands and teachings.(FB) 23 Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility(FC) and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence.
