²⁰ “But God said to him, ‘You fool!^(A) This very night your life is demanded of you. And the things you have prepared—whose will they be?’^(B)

²¹ “That’s how it is with the one who stores up treasure^(C) for himself and is not rich toward God.”^(D)

Instructions to the Rich

¹⁷ Instruct those who are rich in the present age not to be arrogant^(A) or to set their hope on the uncertainty of wealth, but on God,^[a] who richly provides us with all things^(B) to enjoy. ¹⁸ Instruct them to do what is good, to be rich in good works,^(C) to be generous, willing to share,^{(D) 19} storing up for themselves a good reserve^[b] for the age to come,^(E) so that they may take hold of life that is real.

¹⁷ Because you say, ‘I’m rich; I have become wealthy and need nothing,’ and you don’t know that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked, ¹⁸ I advise you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire so that you may be rich, white clothes so that you may be dressed and your shameful nakedness not be exposed, and ointment to spread on your eyes so that you may see.
