Psalm 106

A Confession of Israel’s Sins

Praise the Lord!
    O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,
    for his steadfast love endures forever.(A)
Who can utter the mighty doings of the Lord
    or declare all his praise?(B)
Happy are those who observe justice,
    who do righteousness at all times.(C)

Remember us,[a] O Lord, when you show favor to your people;
    help us[b] when you deliver them,(D)
that we may see the prosperity of your chosen ones,
    that we may rejoice in the gladness of your nation,
    that we may glory in your heritage.(E)

Both we and our ancestors have sinned;
    we have committed iniquity, have done wickedly.(F)
Our ancestors, when they were in Egypt,
    did not consider your wonderful works;
they did not remember the abundance of your steadfast love
    but rebelled against the Most High[c] at the Red Sea.[d](G)
Yet he saved them for his name’s sake,
    so that he might make known his mighty power.(H)
He rebuked the Red Sea,[e] and it became dry;
    he led them through the deep as through a desert.(I)
10 So he saved them from the hand of the foe
    and delivered them from the hand of the enemy.(J)
11 The waters covered their adversaries;
    not one of them was left.(K)
12 Then they believed his words;
    they sang his praise.(L)

13 But they soon forgot his works;
    they did not wait for his counsel.(M)
14 But they had a wanton craving in the wilderness
    and put God to the test in the desert;(N)
15 he gave them what they asked
    but sent a wasting disease among them.(O)

16 They were jealous of Moses in the camp
    and of Aaron, the holy one of the Lord.(P)
17 The earth opened and swallowed up Dathan
    and covered the faction of Abiram.(Q)
18 Fire also broke out in their company;
    the flame burned up the wicked.(R)

19 They made a calf at Horeb
    and worshiped a cast image.(S)
20 They exchanged the glory of God[f]
    for the image of an ox that eats grass.(T)
21 They forgot God, their Savior,
    who had done great things in Egypt,(U)
22 wondrous works in the land of Ham,
    and awesome deeds by the Red Sea.[g](V)
23 Therefore he said he would destroy them—
    had not Moses, his chosen one,
stood in the breach before him,
    to turn away his wrath from destroying them.(W)

24 Then they despised the pleasant land,
    having no faith in his promise.(X)
25 They grumbled in their tents
    and did not obey the voice of the Lord.(Y)
26 Therefore he raised his hand and swore to them
    that he would make them fall in the wilderness(Z)
27 and would disperse[h] their descendants among the nations,
    scattering them over the lands.(AA)

28 Then they attached themselves to the Baal of Peor
    and ate sacrifices offered to the dead;(AB)
29 they provoked the Lord to anger with their deeds,
    and a plague broke out among them.
30 Then Phinehas stood up and interceded,
    and the plague was stopped.(AC)
31 And that has been reckoned to him as righteousness
    from generation to generation forever.(AD)

32 They angered the Lord[i] at the waters of Meribah,
    and it went ill with Moses on their account,(AE)
33 for they made his spirit bitter,
    and he spoke words that were rash.(AF)

34 They did not destroy the peoples,
    as the Lord had commanded them,(AG)
35 but they mingled with the nations
    and learned to do as they did.(AH)
36 They served their idols,
    which became a snare to them.(AI)
37 They sacrificed their sons
    and their daughters to the demons;(AJ)
38 they poured out innocent blood,
    the blood of their sons and daughters,
whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan,
    and the land was polluted with blood.(AK)
39 Thus they became unclean by their acts
    and prostituted themselves in their doings.(AL)

40 Then the anger of the Lord was kindled against his people,
    and he abhorred his heritage;(AM)
41 he gave them into the hand of the nations,
    so that those who hated them ruled over them.(AN)
42 Their enemies oppressed them,
    and they were brought into subjection under their power.
43 Many times he delivered them,
    but they were rebellious in their purposes
    and were brought low through their iniquity.(AO)
44 Nevertheless, he regarded their distress
    when he heard their cry.(AP)
45 For their sake he remembered his covenant
    and showed compassion according to the abundance of his steadfast love.(AQ)
46 He caused them to be pitied
    by all who held them captive.(AR)

47 Save us, O Lord our God,
    and gather us from among the nations,
that we may give thanks to your holy name
    and glory in your praise.(AS)

48 Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,
    from everlasting to everlasting.
And let all the people say, “Amen.”
    Praise the Lord!(AT)

Psalm 107

Thanksgiving for Deliverance from Many Troubles

O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,
    for his steadfast love endures forever.(AU)
Let the redeemed of the Lord say so,
    those he redeemed from trouble(AV)
and gathered in from the lands,
    from the east and from the west,
    from the north and from the south.[j](AW)

Some wandered in desert wastes,
    finding no way to an inhabited town;(AX)
hungry and thirsty,
    their soul fainted within them.
Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he delivered them from their distress;(AY)
he led them by a straight way,
    until they reached an inhabited town.(AZ)
Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
    for his wonderful works to humankind.(BA)
For he satisfies the thirsty,
    and the hungry he fills with good things.(BB)

10 Some sat in darkness and in gloom,
    prisoners in misery and in irons,(BC)
11 for they had rebelled against the words of God
    and spurned the counsel of the Most High.(BD)
12 Their hearts were bowed down with hard labor;
    they fell down, with no one to help.(BE)
13 Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he saved them from their distress;(BF)
14 he brought them out of darkness and gloom,
    and broke their bonds apart.(BG)
15 Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
    for his wonderful works to humankind.(BH)
16 For he shatters the doors of bronze
    and cuts in two the bars of iron.(BI)

17 Some were sick[k] through their sinful ways
    and because of their iniquities endured affliction;(BJ)
18 they loathed any kind of food,
    and they drew near to the gates of death.(BK)
19 Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he saved them from their distress;
20 he sent out his word and healed them
    and delivered them from destruction.(BL)
21 Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
    for his wonderful works to humankind.
22 And let them offer thanksgiving sacrifices
    and tell of his deeds with songs of joy.(BM)

23 Some went down to the sea in ships,
    doing business on the mighty waters;
24 they saw the deeds of the Lord,
    his wondrous works in the deep.
25 For he commanded and raised the stormy wind,
    which lifted up the waves of the sea.(BN)
26 They mounted up to heaven; they went down to the depths;
    their courage melted away in their calamity;(BO)
27 they reeled and staggered like drunkards
    and were at their wits’ end.(BP)
28 Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he brought them out from their distress;
29 he made the storm be still,
    and the waves of the sea were hushed.(BQ)
30 Then they were glad because they had quiet,
    and he brought them to their desired haven.
31 Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
    for his wonderful works to humankind.(BR)
32 Let them extol him in the congregation of the people
    and praise him in the assembly of the elders.(BS)

33 He turns rivers into a desert,
    springs of water into thirsty ground,(BT)
34 a fruitful land into a salty waste,
    because of the wickedness of its inhabitants.(BU)
35 He turns a desert into pools of water,
    a parched land into springs of water.(BV)
36 And there he lets the hungry live,
    and they establish a town to live in;
37 they sow fields and plant vineyards
    and get a fruitful yield.(BW)
38 By his blessing they multiply greatly,
    and he does not let their cattle decrease.(BX)

39 When they are diminished and brought low
    through oppression, trouble, and sorrow,(BY)
40 he pours contempt on princes
    and makes them wander in trackless wastes,(BZ)
41 but he raises up the needy out of distress
    and makes their families like flocks.(CA)
42 The upright see it and are glad,
    and all wickedness stops its mouth.(CB)
43 Let those who are wise pay attention to these things
    and consider the steadfast love of the Lord.(CC)

Psalm 108

Praise and Prayer for Victory

A Song. A Psalm of David.

My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast;[l]
    I will sing and make melody.
    Awake, my soul![m](CD)
Awake, O harp and lyre!
    I will awake the dawn.(CE)
I will give thanks to you, O Lord, among the peoples,
    and I will sing praises to you among the nations.
For your steadfast love is higher than the heavens,
    and your faithfulness reaches to the clouds.(CF)

Be exalted, O God, above the heavens,
    and let your glory be over all the earth.
Give victory with your right hand, and answer me,
    so that those whom you love may be rescued.(CG)

God has promised in his sanctuary:[n]
    “With exultation I will divide up Shechem
    and portion out the Vale of Succoth.
Gilead is mine; Manasseh is mine;
    Ephraim is my helmet;
    Judah is my scepter.(CH)
Moab is my washbasin;
    on Edom I hurl my shoe;
    over Philistia I shout in triumph.”

10 Who will bring me to the fortified city?
    Who will lead me to Edom?
11 Have you not rejected us, O God?
    You do not go out, O God, with our armies.(CI)
12 O grant us help against the foe,
    for human help is worthless.
13 With God we shall do valiantly;
    it is he who will tread down our foes.

Psalm 109

Prayer for Vindication and Vengeance

To the leader. Of David. A Psalm.

Do not be silent, O God of my praise.(CJ)
For wicked and deceitful mouths are opened against me,
    speaking against me with lying tongues.
They surround me with words of hate
    and attack me without cause.(CK)
In return for my love they accuse me,
    even while I make prayer for them.[o](CL)
So they reward me evil for good
    and hatred for my love.(CM)

They say,[p] “Appoint a wicked man against him;
    let an accuser stand on his right.(CN)
When he is tried, let him be found guilty;
    let his prayer be counted as sin.(CO)
May his days be few;
    may another seize his position.(CP)
May his children be orphans
    and his wife a widow.(CQ)
10 May his children wander about and beg;
    may they be driven out of[q] the ruins they inhabit.
11 May the creditor seize all that he has;
    may strangers plunder the fruits of his toil.(CR)
12 May there be no one to do him a kindness
    nor anyone to pity his orphaned children.(CS)
13 May his posterity be cut off;
    may his name be blotted out in the second generation.(CT)
14 May the iniquity of his father[r] be remembered before the Lord,
    and do not let the sin of his mother be blotted out.(CU)
15 Let them be before the Lord continually,
    and may his[s] memory be cut off from the earth.(CV)
16 For he did not remember to show kindness
    but pursued the poor and needy
    and the brokenhearted to their death.(CW)
17 He loved to curse; let curses come on him.
    He did not like blessing; may it be far from him.(CX)
18 He clothed himself with cursing as his coat;
    may it soak into his body like water,
    like oil into his bones.(CY)
19 May it be like a garment that he wraps around himself,
    like a belt that he wears every day.”

20 May that be the reward of my accusers from the Lord,
    of those who speak evil against my life.(CZ)
21 But you, O Lord my Lord,
    act on my behalf for your name’s sake;
    because your steadfast love is good, deliver me.(DA)
22 For I am poor and needy,
    and my heart is pierced within me.(DB)
23 I am gone like a shadow at evening;
    I am shaken off like a locust.(DC)
24 My knees are weak through fasting;
    my body has become gaunt.(DD)
25 I am an object of scorn to my accusers;
    when they see me, they shake their heads.(DE)

26 Help me, O Lord my God!
    Save me according to your steadfast love.
27 Let them know that this is your hand;
    you, O Lord, have done it.(DF)
28 Let them curse, but you will bless.
    Let my assailants be put to shame;[t] may your servant be glad.(DG)
29 May my accusers be clothed with dishonor;
    may they be wrapped in their own shame as in a mantle.(DH)
30 With my mouth I will give great thanks to the Lord;
    I will praise him in the midst of the throng.(DI)
31 For he stands at the right hand of the needy,
    to save them from those who would condemn them to death.(DJ)

The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind,
    “You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.”[w](DN)

The Lord is at your right hand;
    he will shatter kings on the day of his wrath.(DO)
He will execute judgment among the nations,
    filling them with corpses;
he will shatter heads
    over the wide earth.(DP)
He will drink from the stream by the path;
    therefore he will lift up his head.(DQ)

    Jordan turned back.(EQ)
The mountains skipped like rams,
    the hills like lambs.(ER)

Why is it, O sea, that you flee?
    O Jordan, that you turn back?
O mountains, that you skip like rams?

    the flint into a spring of water.(ET)

Our God is in the heavens;

    they have eyes, but they do not see.
They have ears, but they do not hear;
    they have noses, but they do not smell.

who also do no wrong
    but walk in his ways.(GR)
You have commanded your precepts
    to be kept diligently.

    as much as in all riches.
15 I will meditate on your precepts
    and fix my eyes on your ways.(GZ)
16 I will delight in your statutes;
    I will not forget your word.(HA)

17 Deal bountifully with your servant,
    so that I may live and observe your word.(HB)

    that he may answer me:(LR)
“Deliver me, O Lord,
    from lying lips,
    from a deceitful tongue.”

What shall be given to you?
    And what more shall be done to you,
    you deceitful tongue?
A warrior’s sharp arrows,
    with glowing coals of the broom tree!(LS)

Woe is me, that I am an alien in Meshech,
    that I must live among the tents of Kedar.(LT)
Too long have I had my dwelling
    among those who hate peace.
I am for peace,
    but when I speak,
    they are for war.

Song of Praise and Prayer for Jerusalem

A Song of Ascents. Of David.

    “Let us go to the house of the Lord!”(MA)
Our feet are standing
    within your gates, O Jerusalem.

Jerusalem—built as a city
    that is bound firmly together.(MB)
To it the tribes go up,
    the tribes of the Lord,
as was decreed for Israel,
    to give thanks to the name of the Lord.(MC)
For there the thrones for judgment were set up,
    the thrones of the house of David.(MD)

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem:
    “May they prosper who love you.(ME)
Peace be within your walls
    and security within your towers.”
For the sake of my relatives and friends
    I will say, “Peace be within you.”
For the sake of the house of the Lord our God,
    I will seek your good.(MF)

Psalm 123

Supplication for Mercy

A Song of Ascents.

To you I lift up my eyes,
    O you who are enthroned in the heavens!(MG)
As the eyes of servants
    look to the hand of their master,
as the eyes of a maid
    to the hand of her mistress,
so our eyes look to the Lord our God,
    until he has mercy upon us.(MH)

Have mercy upon us, O Lord, have mercy upon us,
    for we have had more than enough of contempt.(MI)
Our soul has had more than its fill
    of the scorn of those who are at ease,
    of the contempt of the proud.(MJ)

Psalm 124

Thanksgiving for Israel’s Deliverance

A Song of Ascents. Of David.

If it had not been the Lord who was on our side
    —let Israel now say—(MK)
if it had not been the Lord who was on our side,
    when our enemies attacked us,
then they would have swallowed us up alive,
    when their anger was kindled against us;(ML)
then the flood would have swept us away;
    the torrent would have gone over us;(MM)
then over us would have gone
    the raging waters.

Blessed be the Lord,
    who has not given us
    as prey to their teeth.(MN)
We have escaped like a bird
    from the snare of the hunters;
the snare is broken,
    and we have escaped.(MO)

Our help is in the name of the Lord,
    who made heaven and earth.(MP)

Psalm 125

The Security of God’s People

A Song of Ascents.

Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion,
    which cannot be moved but abides forever.(MQ)
As the mountains surround Jerusalem,
    so the Lord surrounds his people
    from this time on and forevermore.(MR)
For the scepter of wickedness shall not rest
    on the land allotted to the righteous,
so that the righteous might not stretch out
    their hands to do wrong.(MS)
Do good, O Lord, to those who are good
    and to those who are upright in their hearts.(MT)
But those who turn aside to their own crooked ways,
    the Lord will lead away with evildoers.
    Peace be upon Israel!(MU)

Psalm 126

A Harvest of Joy

A Song of Ascents.

When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion,[ao]
    we were like those who dream.(MV)
Then our mouth was filled with laughter
    and our tongue with shouts of joy;
then it was said among the nations,
    “The Lord has done great things for them.”(MW)
The Lord has done great things for us,
    and we rejoiced.(MX)

Restore our fortunes, O Lord,
    like the watercourses in the Negeb.(MY)
May those who sow in tears
    reap with shouts of joy.(MZ)
Those who go out weeping,
    bearing the seed for sowing,
shall come home with shouts of joy,
    carrying their sheaves.

Psalm 127

God’s Blessings in the Home

A Song of Ascents. Of Solomon.

Unless the Lord builds the house,
    those who build it labor in vain.
Unless the Lord guards the city,
    the guard keeps watch in vain.(NA)
It is in vain that you rise up early
    and go late to rest,
eating the bread of anxious toil,
    for he gives sleep to his beloved.[ap](NB)

Sons are indeed a heritage from the Lord,
    the fruit of the womb a reward.(NC)
Like arrows in the hand of a warrior
    are the sons of one’s youth.
Happy is the man who has
    his quiver full of them.
He shall not be put to shame
    when he speaks with his enemies in the gate.(ND)

Psalm 128

The Happy Home of the Faithful

You shall eat the fruit of the labor of your hands;
    you shall be happy, and it shall go well with you.(NF)

Your wife will be like a fruitful vine
    within your house;
your children will be like olive shoots
    around your table.(NG)
Thus shall the man be blessed

The Lord bless you from Zion.
    May you see the prosperity of Jerusalem
    all the days of your life.(NH)
May you see your children’s children.
    Peace be upon Israel!(NI)

Psalm 129

A Song of Ascents.

Often have they attacked me from my youth
    —let Israel now say—(NJ)
often have they attacked me from my youth,
    yet they have not prevailed against me.(NK)
The plowers plowed on my back;
    they made their furrows long.
The Lord is righteous;
    he has cut the cords of the wicked.(NL)
May all who hate Zion
    be put to shame and turned backward.(NM)
Let them be like the grass on the housetops
    that withers before it grows up,(NN)
with which reapers do not fill their hands
    or binders of sheaves their arms,
while those who pass by do not say,
    “The blessing of the Lord be upon you!
    We bless you in the name of the Lord!”(NO)

Psalm 130

Waiting for Divine Redemption

A Song of Ascents.

Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord.(NP)
    Lord, hear my voice!
Let your ears be attentive
    to the voice of my supplications!(NQ)

If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities,
    Lord, who could stand?(NR)
But there is forgiveness with you,
    so that you may be revered.(NS)

I wait for the Lord; my soul waits,
    and in his word I hope;(NT)
my soul waits for the Lord
    more than those who watch for the morning,
    more than those who watch for the morning.(NU)

O Israel, hope in the Lord!
    For with the Lord there is steadfast love,
    and with him is great power to redeem.(NV)
It is he who will redeem Israel
    from all its iniquities.(NW)

Psalm 106(A)

Praise the Lord.[a](B)

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;(C)
    his love endures forever.(D)

Who can proclaim the mighty acts(E) of the Lord
    or fully declare his praise?
Blessed are those who act justly,(F)
    who always do what is right.(G)

Remember me,(H) Lord, when you show favor(I) to your people,
    come to my aid(J) when you save them,
that I may enjoy the prosperity(K) of your chosen ones,(L)
    that I may share in the joy(M) of your nation
    and join your inheritance(N) in giving praise.

We have sinned,(O) even as our ancestors(P) did;
    we have done wrong and acted wickedly.(Q)
When our ancestors were in Egypt,
    they gave no thought(R) to your miracles;
they did not remember(S) your many kindnesses,
    and they rebelled by the sea,(T) the Red Sea.[b]
Yet he saved them(U) for his name’s sake,(V)
    to make his mighty power(W) known.
He rebuked(X) the Red Sea, and it dried up;(Y)
    he led them through(Z) the depths as through a desert.
10 He saved them(AA) from the hand of the foe;(AB)
    from the hand of the enemy he redeemed them.(AC)
11 The waters covered(AD) their adversaries;
    not one of them survived.
12 Then they believed his promises
    and sang his praise.(AE)

13 But they soon forgot(AF) what he had done
    and did not wait for his plan to unfold.(AG)
14 In the desert(AH) they gave in to their craving;
    in the wilderness(AI) they put God to the test.(AJ)
15 So he gave them(AK) what they asked for,
    but sent a wasting disease(AL) among them.

16 In the camp they grew envious(AM) of Moses
    and of Aaron, who was consecrated to the Lord.
17 The earth opened(AN) up and swallowed Dathan;(AO)
    it buried the company of Abiram.(AP)
18 Fire blazed(AQ) among their followers;
    a flame consumed the wicked.
19 At Horeb they made a calf(AR)
    and worshiped an idol cast from metal.
20 They exchanged their glorious God(AS)
    for an image of a bull, which eats grass.
21 They forgot the God(AT) who saved them,
    who had done great things(AU) in Egypt,
22 miracles in the land of Ham(AV)
    and awesome deeds(AW) by the Red Sea.
23 So he said he would destroy(AX) them—
    had not Moses, his chosen one,
stood in the breach(AY) before him
    to keep his wrath from destroying them.

24 Then they despised(AZ) the pleasant land;(BA)
    they did not believe(BB) his promise.
25 They grumbled(BC) in their tents
    and did not obey the Lord.
26 So he swore(BD) to them with uplifted hand
    that he would make them fall in the wilderness,(BE)
27 make their descendants fall among the nations
    and scatter(BF) them throughout the lands.

28 They yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor(BG)
    and ate sacrifices offered to lifeless gods;
29 they aroused the Lord’s anger(BH) by their wicked deeds,(BI)
    and a plague(BJ) broke out among them.
30 But Phinehas(BK) stood up and intervened,
    and the plague was checked.(BL)
31 This was credited to him(BM) as righteousness
    for endless generations(BN) to come.
32 By the waters of Meribah(BO) they angered the Lord,
    and trouble came to Moses because of them;
33 for they rebelled(BP) against the Spirit(BQ) of God,
    and rash words came from Moses’ lips.[c](BR)

34 They did not destroy(BS) the peoples
    as the Lord had commanded(BT) them,
35 but they mingled(BU) with the nations
    and adopted their customs.
36 They worshiped their idols,(BV)
    which became a snare(BW) to them.
37 They sacrificed their sons(BX)
    and their daughters to false gods.(BY)
38 They shed innocent blood,
    the blood of their sons(BZ) and daughters,
whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan,
    and the land was desecrated by their blood.
39 They defiled themselves(CA) by what they did;
    by their deeds they prostituted(CB) themselves.

40 Therefore the Lord was angry(CC) with his people
    and abhorred his inheritance.(CD)
41 He gave them into the hands(CE) of the nations,
    and their foes ruled over them.
42 Their enemies oppressed(CF) them
    and subjected them to their power.
43 Many times he delivered them,(CG)
    but they were bent on rebellion(CH)
    and they wasted away in their sin.
44 Yet he took note of their distress
    when he heard their cry;(CI)
45 for their sake he remembered his covenant(CJ)
    and out of his great love(CK) he relented.(CL)
46 He caused all who held them captive
    to show them mercy.(CM)

47 Save us,(CN) Lord our God,
    and gather us(CO) from the nations,
that we may give thanks(CP) to your holy name(CQ)
    and glory in your praise.

48 Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel,
    from everlasting to everlasting.

Let all the people say, “Amen!”(CR)

Praise the Lord.

BOOK V

Psalms 107–150

Psalm 107

Give thanks to the Lord,(CS) for he is good;(CT)
    his love endures forever.

Let the redeemed(CU) of the Lord tell their story—
    those he redeemed from the hand of the foe,
those he gathered(CV) from the lands,
    from east and west, from north and south.[d]

Some wandered in desert(CW) wastelands,
    finding no way to a city(CX) where they could settle.
They were hungry(CY) and thirsty,(CZ)
    and their lives ebbed away.
Then they cried out(DA) to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he delivered them from their distress.
He led them by a straight way(DB)
    to a city(DC) where they could settle.
Let them give thanks(DD) to the Lord for his unfailing love(DE)
    and his wonderful deeds(DF) for mankind,
for he satisfies(DG) the thirsty
    and fills the hungry with good things.(DH)

10 Some sat in darkness,(DI) in utter darkness,
    prisoners suffering(DJ) in iron chains,(DK)
11 because they rebelled(DL) against God’s commands
    and despised(DM) the plans(DN) of the Most High.
12 So he subjected them to bitter labor;
    they stumbled, and there was no one to help.(DO)
13 Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he saved them(DP) from their distress.
14 He brought them out of darkness,(DQ) the utter darkness,(DR)
    and broke away their chains.(DS)
15 Let them give thanks(DT) to the Lord for his unfailing love(DU)
    and his wonderful deeds(DV) for mankind,
16 for he breaks down gates of bronze
    and cuts through bars of iron.

17 Some became fools(DW) through their rebellious ways(DX)
    and suffered affliction(DY) because of their iniquities.
18 They loathed all food(DZ)
    and drew near the gates of death.(EA)
19 Then they cried(EB) to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he saved them(EC) from their distress.
20 He sent out his word(ED) and healed them;(EE)
    he rescued(EF) them from the grave.(EG)
21 Let them give thanks(EH) to the Lord for his unfailing love(EI)
    and his wonderful deeds(EJ) for mankind.
22 Let them sacrifice thank offerings(EK)
    and tell of his works(EL) with songs of joy.(EM)

23 Some went out on the sea(EN) in ships;(EO)
    they were merchants on the mighty waters.
24 They saw the works of the Lord,(EP)
    his wonderful deeds in the deep.
25 For he spoke(EQ) and stirred up a tempest(ER)
    that lifted high the waves.(ES)
26 They mounted up to the heavens and went down to the depths;
    in their peril(ET) their courage melted(EU) away.
27 They reeled(EV) and staggered like drunkards;
    they were at their wits’ end.
28 Then they cried(EW) out to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he brought them out of their distress.(EX)
29 He stilled the storm(EY) to a whisper;
    the waves(EZ) of the sea[e] were hushed.(FA)
30 They were glad when it grew calm,
    and he guided them(FB) to their desired haven.
31 Let them give thanks(FC) to the Lord for his unfailing love(FD)
    and his wonderful deeds(FE) for mankind.
32 Let them exalt(FF) him in the assembly(FG) of the people
    and praise him in the council of the elders.

33 He turned rivers into a desert,(FH)
    flowing springs(FI) into thirsty ground,
34 and fruitful land into a salt waste,(FJ)
    because of the wickedness of those who lived there.
35 He turned the desert into pools of water(FK)
    and the parched ground into flowing springs;(FL)
36 there he brought the hungry to live,
    and they founded a city where they could settle.
37 They sowed fields and planted vineyards(FM)
    that yielded a fruitful harvest;
38 he blessed them, and their numbers greatly increased,(FN)
    and he did not let their herds diminish.(FO)

39 Then their numbers decreased,(FP) and they were humbled(FQ)
    by oppression, calamity and sorrow;
40 he who pours contempt on nobles(FR)
    made them wander in a trackless waste.(FS)
41 But he lifted the needy(FT) out of their affliction
    and increased their families like flocks.(FU)
42 The upright see and rejoice,(FV)
    but all the wicked shut their mouths.(FW)

43 Let the one who is wise(FX) heed these things
    and ponder the loving deeds(FY) of the Lord.

Psalm 108[f](FZ)(GA)

A song. A psalm of David.

My heart, O God, is steadfast;(GB)
    I will sing(GC) and make music with all my soul.
Awake, harp and lyre!(GD)
    I will awaken the dawn.
I will praise you, Lord, among the nations;
    I will sing of you among the peoples.
For great is your love,(GE) higher than the heavens;
    your faithfulness(GF) reaches to the skies.(GG)
Be exalted, O God, above the heavens;(GH)
    let your glory be over all the earth.(GI)

Save us and help us with your right hand,(GJ)
    that those you love may be delivered.
God has spoken(GK) from his sanctuary:(GL)
    “In triumph I will parcel out Shechem(GM)
    and measure off the Valley of Sukkoth.(GN)
Gilead is mine, Manasseh is mine;
    Ephraim is my helmet,
    Judah(GO) is my scepter.
Moab(GP) is my washbasin,
    on Edom(GQ) I toss my sandal;
    over Philistia(GR) I shout in triumph.”

10 Who will bring me to the fortified city?
    Who will lead me to Edom?
11 Is it not you, God, you who have rejected us
    and no longer go out with our armies?(GS)
12 Give us aid against the enemy,
    for human help is worthless.(GT)
13 With God we will gain the victory,
    and he will trample down(GU) our enemies.

Psalm 109

For the director of music. Of David. A psalm.

My God, whom I praise,(GV)
    do not remain silent,(GW)
for people who are wicked and deceitful(GX)
    have opened their mouths against me;
    they have spoken against me with lying tongues.(GY)
With words of hatred(GZ) they surround me;
    they attack me without cause.(HA)
In return for my friendship they accuse me,
    but I am a man of prayer.(HB)
They repay me evil for good,(HC)
    and hatred for my friendship.

Appoint someone evil to oppose my enemy;
    let an accuser(HD) stand at his right hand.
When he is tried, let him be found guilty,(HE)
    and may his prayers condemn(HF) him.
May his days be few;(HG)
    may another take his place(HH) of leadership.
May his children be fatherless
    and his wife a widow.(HI)
10 May his children be wandering beggars;(HJ)
    may they be driven[g] from their ruined homes.
11 May a creditor(HK) seize all he has;
    may strangers plunder(HL) the fruits of his labor.(HM)
12 May no one extend kindness to him
    or take pity(HN) on his fatherless children.
13 May his descendants be cut off,(HO)
    their names blotted out(HP) from the next generation.
14 May the iniquity of his fathers(HQ) be remembered before the Lord;
    may the sin of his mother never be blotted out.
15 May their sins always remain before(HR) the Lord,
    that he may blot out their name(HS) from the earth.

16 For he never thought of doing a kindness,
    but hounded to death the poor
    and the needy(HT) and the brokenhearted.(HU)
17 He loved to pronounce a curse—
    may it come back on him.(HV)
He found no pleasure in blessing—
    may it be far from him.
18 He wore cursing(HW) as his garment;
    it entered into his body like water,(HX)
    into his bones like oil.
19 May it be like a cloak wrapped(HY) about him,
    like a belt tied forever around him.
20 May this be the Lord’s payment(HZ) to my accusers,
    to those who speak evil(IA) of me.

21 But you, Sovereign Lord,
    help me for your name’s sake;(IB)
    out of the goodness of your love,(IC) deliver me.(ID)
22 For I am poor and needy,
    and my heart is wounded within me.
23 I fade away like an evening shadow;(IE)
    I am shaken off like a locust.
24 My knees give(IF) way from fasting;(IG)
    my body is thin and gaunt.(IH)
25 I am an object of scorn(II) to my accusers;
    when they see me, they shake their heads.(IJ)

26 Help me,(IK) Lord my God;
    save me according to your unfailing love.
27 Let them know(IL) that it is your hand,
    that you, Lord, have done it.
28 While they curse,(IM) may you bless;
    may those who attack me be put to shame,
    but may your servant rejoice.(IN)
29 May my accusers be clothed with disgrace
    and wrapped in shame(IO) as in a cloak.

30 With my mouth I will greatly extol the Lord;
    in the great throng(IP) of worshipers I will praise him.
31 For he stands at the right hand(IQ) of the needy,
    to save their lives from those who would condemn them.

Psalm 110

Of David. A psalm.

The Lord says(IR) to my lord:[h]

“Sit at my right hand(IS)
    until I make your enemies
    a footstool for your feet.”(IT)

The Lord will extend your mighty scepter(IU) from Zion,(IV) saying,
    “Rule(IW) in the midst of your enemies!”
Your troops will be willing
    on your day of battle.
Arrayed in holy splendor,(IX)
    your young men will come to you
    like dew from the morning’s womb.[i](IY)

The Lord has sworn
    and will not change his mind:(IZ)
“You are a priest forever,(JA)
    in the order of Melchizedek.(JB)

The Lord is at your right hand[j];(JC)
    he will crush kings(JD) on the day of his wrath.(JE)
He will judge the nations,(JF) heaping up the dead(JG)
    and crushing the rulers(JH) of the whole earth.
He will drink from a brook along the way,[k]
    and so he will lift his head high.(JI)

Psalm 111[l]

Praise the Lord.[m]

I will extol the Lord(JJ) with all my heart(JK)
    in the council(JL) of the upright and in the assembly.(JM)

Great are the works(JN) of the Lord;
    they are pondered by all(JO) who delight in them.
Glorious and majestic are his deeds,
    and his righteousness endures(JP) forever.
He has caused his wonders to be remembered;
    the Lord is gracious and compassionate.(JQ)
He provides food(JR) for those who fear him;(JS)
    he remembers his covenant(JT) forever.

He has shown his people the power of his works,(JU)
    giving them the lands of other nations.(JV)
The works of his hands(JW) are faithful and just;
    all his precepts are trustworthy.(JX)
They are established for ever(JY) and ever,
    enacted in faithfulness and uprightness.
He provided redemption(JZ) for his people;
    he ordained his covenant forever—
    holy and awesome(KA) is his name.

10 The fear of the Lord(KB) is the beginning of wisdom;(KC)
    all who follow his precepts have good understanding.(KD)
    To him belongs eternal praise.(KE)

Psalm 112[n]

Praise the Lord.[o](KF)

Blessed are those(KG) who fear the Lord,(KH)
    who find great delight(KI) in his commands.

Their children(KJ) will be mighty in the land;
    the generation of the upright will be blessed.
Wealth and riches(KK) are in their houses,
    and their righteousness endures(KL) forever.
Even in darkness light dawns(KM) for the upright,
    for those who are gracious and compassionate and righteous.(KN)
Good will come to those who are generous and lend freely,(KO)
    who conduct their affairs with justice.

Surely the righteous will never be shaken;(KP)
    they will be remembered(KQ) forever.
They will have no fear of bad news;
    their hearts are steadfast,(KR) trusting in the Lord.(KS)
Their hearts are secure, they will have no fear;(KT)
    in the end they will look in triumph on their foes.(KU)
They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor,(KV)
    their righteousness endures(KW) forever;
    their horn[p] will be lifted(KX) high in honor.

10 The wicked will see(KY) and be vexed,
    they will gnash their teeth(KZ) and waste away;(LA)
    the longings of the wicked will come to nothing.(LB)

Psalm 113

Praise the Lord.[q](LC)

Praise the Lord, you his servants;(LD)
    praise the name of the Lord.
Let the name of the Lord be praised,(LE)
    both now and forevermore.(LF)
From the rising of the sun(LG) to the place where it sets,
    the name of the Lord is to be praised.

The Lord is exalted(LH) over all the nations,
    his glory above the heavens.(LI)
Who is like the Lord our God,(LJ)
    the One who sits enthroned(LK) on high,(LL)
who stoops down to look(LM)
    on the heavens and the earth?

He raises the poor(LN) from the dust
    and lifts the needy(LO) from the ash heap;
he seats them(LP) with princes,
    with the princes of his people.
He settles the childless(LQ) woman in her home
    as a happy mother of children.

Praise the Lord.

Psalm 114

When Israel came out of Egypt,(LR)
    Jacob from a people of foreign tongue,
Judah(LS) became God’s sanctuary,(LT)
    Israel his dominion.

The sea looked and fled,(LU)
    the Jordan turned back;(LV)
the mountains leaped(LW) like rams,
    the hills like lambs.

Why was it, sea, that you fled?(LX)
    Why, Jordan, did you turn back?
Why, mountains, did you leap like rams,
    you hills, like lambs?

Tremble, earth,(LY) at the presence of the Lord,
    at the presence of the God of Jacob,
who turned the rock into a pool,
    the hard rock into springs of water.(LZ)

Psalm 115(MA)

Not to us, Lord, not to us
    but to your name be the glory,(MB)
    because of your love and faithfulness.(MC)

Why do the nations say,
    “Where is their God?”(MD)
Our God is in heaven;(ME)
    he does whatever pleases him.(MF)
But their idols are silver and gold,(MG)
    made by human hands.(MH)
They have mouths, but cannot speak,(MI)
    eyes, but cannot see.
They have ears, but cannot hear,
    noses, but cannot smell.
They have hands, but cannot feel,
    feet, but cannot walk,
    nor can they utter a sound with their throats.
Those who make them will be like them,
    and so will all who trust in them.

All you Israelites, trust(MJ) in the Lord
    he is their help and shield.
10 House of Aaron,(MK) trust in the Lord
    he is their help and shield.
11 You who fear him,(ML) trust in the Lord
    he is their help and shield.

12 The Lord remembers(MM) us and will bless us:(MN)
    He will bless his people Israel,
    he will bless the house of Aaron,
13 he will bless those who fear(MO) the Lord
    small and great alike.

14 May the Lord cause you to flourish,(MP)
    both you and your children.
15 May you be blessed by the Lord,
    the Maker of heaven(MQ) and earth.

16 The highest heavens belong to the Lord,(MR)
    but the earth he has given(MS) to mankind.
17 It is not the dead(MT) who praise the Lord,
    those who go down to the place of silence;
18 it is we who extol the Lord,(MU)
    both now and forevermore.(MV)

Praise the Lord.[r](MW)

Psalm 116

Because he turned his ear(NA) to me,
    I will call on him as long as I live.

Then I called on the name(NC) of the Lord:
    Lord, save me!(ND)

The Lord is gracious and righteous;(NE)
    our God is full of compassion.(NF)

    my eyes from tears,
    my feet from stumbling,
that I may walk before the Lord(NL)
    in the land of the living.(NM)

10 I trusted(NN) in the Lord when I said,
    “I am greatly afflicted”;(NO)
11 in my alarm I said,
    “Everyone is a liar.”(NP)

12 What shall I return to the Lord
    for all his goodness(NQ) to me?

13 I will lift up the cup of salvation
    and call on the name(NR) of the Lord.

19 in the courts(OA) of the house of the Lord
    in your midst, Jerusalem.(OB)

Praise the Lord.[s]

Psalm 117

The Lord is with me;(OP) I will not be afraid.
    What can mere mortals do to me?(OQ)
The Lord is with me; he is my helper.(OR)
    I look in triumph on my enemies.(OS)

It is better to take refuge in the Lord(OT)
    than to trust in humans.(OU)
It is better to take refuge in the Lord
    than to trust in princes.(OV)
10 All the nations surrounded me,
    but in the name of the Lord I cut them down.(OW)
11 They surrounded me(OX) on every side,(OY)
    but in the name of the Lord I cut them down.
12 They swarmed around me like bees,(OZ)

    in the name of the Lord I cut them down.(PB)

    but the Lord helped me.(PC)
14 The Lord is my strength(PD) and my defense[u];

15 Shouts of joy(PF) and victory
    resound in the tents of the righteous:
“The Lord’s right hand(PG) has done mighty things!(PH)
16     The Lord’s right hand is lifted high;
    the Lord’s right hand has done mighty things!”
17 I will not die(PI) but live,
    and will proclaim(PJ) what the Lord has done.
18 The Lord has chastened(PK) me severely,
    but he has not given me over to death.(PL)
19 Open for me the gates(PM) of the righteous;

21 I will give you thanks, for you answered me;(PQ)
    you have become my salvation.(PR)

22 The stone(PS) the builders rejected

23 the Lord has done this,
    and it is marvelous(PU) in our eyes.
24 The Lord has done it this very day;
    let us rejoice today and be glad.(PV)

25 Lord, save us!(PW)
    Lord, grant us success!

26 Blessed is he who comes(PX) in the name of the Lord.
    From the house of the Lord we bless you.[v](PY)
