Psalm 10

Psalm 10^[a]

¹Why, Lord, do you stand far off?^(A)
Why do you hide yourself^(B) in times of trouble?

²In his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the weak,^(C)
    who are caught in the schemes he devises.
³He boasts^(D) about the cravings of his heart;
    he blesses the greedy and reviles the Lord.^(E)
⁴In his pride the wicked man does not seek him;
    in all his thoughts there is no room for God.^(F)
⁵His ways are always prosperous;
    your laws are rejected by^[b] him;
    he sneers at all his enemies.
⁶He says to himself, “Nothing will ever shake me.”
    He swears, “No one will ever do me harm.”^(G)

⁷His mouth is full^(H) of lies and threats;^(I)
    trouble and evil are under his tongue.^(J)
⁸He lies in wait^(K) near the villages;
    from ambush he murders the innocent.^(L)
His eyes watch in secret for his victims;
⁹    like a lion in cover he lies in wait.
He lies in wait to catch the helpless;^(M)
    he catches the helpless and drags them off in his net.^(N)
¹⁰His victims are crushed,^(O) they collapse;
    they fall under his strength.
¹¹He says to himself, “God will never notice;^(P)
    he covers his face and never sees.”^(Q)

¹²Arise,^(R) Lord! Lift up your hand,^(S) O God.
    Do not forget the helpless.^(T)
¹³Why does the wicked man revile God?^(U)
    Why does he say to himself,
    “He won’t call me to account”?^(V)
¹⁴But you, God, see the trouble^(W) of the afflicted;
    you consider their grief and take it in hand.
The victims commit themselves to you;^(X)
    you are the helper^(Y) of the fatherless.
¹⁵Break the arm of the wicked man;^(Z)
    call the evildoer to account for his wickedness
    that would not otherwise be found out.

¹⁶The Lord is King for ever and ever;^(AA)
    the nations^(AB) will perish from his land.
¹⁷You, Lord, hear the desire of the afflicted;^(AC)
    you encourage them, and you listen to their cry,^(AD)
¹⁸defending the fatherless^(AE) and the oppressed,^(AF)
    so that mere earthly mortals
    will never again strike terror.

7 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: ²“Stand^(A) at the gate of the Lord’s house and there proclaim this message:

“‘Hear the word of the Lord, all you people of Judah who come through these gates to worship the Lord. ³This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Reform your ways^(B) and your actions, and I will let you live^(C) in this place. ⁴Do not trust^(D) in deceptive^(E) words and say, “This is the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord!” ⁵If you really change^(F) your ways and your actions and deal with each other justly,^(G) ⁶if you do not oppress^(H) the foreigner, the fatherless or the widow and do not shed innocent blood^(I) in this place, and if you do not follow other gods^(J) to your own harm, ⁷then I will let you live in this place, in the land^(K) I gave your ancestors^(L) for ever and ever. ⁸But look, you are trusting^(M) in deceptive^(N) words that are worthless.

⁹“‘Will you steal^(O) and murder,^(P) commit adultery^(Q) and perjury,^[a]^(R) burn incense to Baal^(S) and follow other gods^(T) you have not known, ¹⁰and then come and stand^(U) before me in this house,^(V) which bears my Name, and say, “We are safe”—safe to do all these detestable things?^(W) ¹¹Has this house,^(X) which bears my Name, become a den of robbers^(Y) to you? But I have been watching!^(Z) declares the Lord.

¹²“‘Go now to the place in Shiloh^(AA) where I first made a dwelling^(AB) for my Name,^(AC) and see what I did^(AD) to it because of the wickedness of my people Israel. ¹³While you were doing all these things, declares the Lord, I spoke^(AE) to you again and again,^(AF) but you did not listen;^(AG) I called^(AH) you, but you did not answer.^(AI) ¹⁴Therefore, what I did to Shiloh^(AJ) I will now do to the house that bears my Name,^(AK) the temple^(AL) you trust in, the place I gave to you and your ancestors. ¹⁵I will thrust you from my presence,^(AM) just as I did all your fellow Israelites, the people of Ephraim.’^(AN)

Warning Against Unbelief

⁷So, as the Holy Spirit says:^(A)

“Today, if you hear his voice,
⁸    do not harden your hearts^(B)
as you did in the rebellion,
    during the time of testing in the wilderness,
⁹where your ancestors tested and tried me,
    though for forty years they saw what I did.^(C)
¹⁰That is why I was angry with that generation;
    I said, ‘Their hearts are always going astray,
    and they have not known my ways.’
¹¹So I declared on oath in my anger,^(D)
    ‘They shall never enter my rest.’ ^(E)”^[a]^(F)

¹²See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God.^(G) ¹³But encourage one another daily,^(H) as long as it is called “Today,” so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.^(I) ¹⁴We have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold^(J) our original conviction firmly to the very end.^(K) ¹⁵As has just been said:

“Today, if you hear his voice,
do not harden your hearts
as you did in the rebellion.”^[b]^(L)

¹⁶Who were they who heard and rebelled? Were they not all those Moses led out of Egypt?^(M) ¹⁷And with whom was he angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies perished in the wilderness?^(N) ¹⁸And to whom did God swear that they would never enter his rest^(O) if not to those who disobeyed?^(P) ¹⁹So we see that they were not able to enter, because of their unbelief.^(Q)

A Sabbath-Rest for the People of God

4 Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it.^(R) ²For we also have had the good news proclaimed to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because they did not share the faith of those who obeyed.^[c]^(S) ³Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said,

“So I declared on oath in my anger,
‘They shall never enter my rest.’”^[d]^(T)

And yet his works have been finished since the creation of the world. ⁴For somewhere he has spoken about the seventh day in these words: “On the seventh day God rested from all his works.”^[e]^(U) ⁵And again in the passage above he says, “They shall never enter my rest.”^(V)

⁶Therefore since it still remains for some to enter that rest, and since those who formerly had the good news proclaimed to them did not go in because of their disobedience,^(W) ⁷God again set a certain day, calling it “Today.” This he did when a long time later he spoke through David, as in the passage already quoted:

“Today, if you hear his voice,
do not harden your hearts.”^[f]^(X)

⁸For if Joshua had given them rest,^(Y) God would not have spoken^(Z) later about another day. ⁹There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; ¹⁰for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works,^[g]^(AA) just as God did from his.^(AB) ¹¹Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience.^(AC)
