Psalm 10

Psalm 10^[a]

¹Why, Lord, do you stand far off?^(A)
Why do you hide yourself^(B) in times of trouble?

²In his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the weak,^(C)
    who are caught in the schemes he devises.
³He boasts^(D) about the cravings of his heart;
    he blesses the greedy and reviles the Lord.^(E)
⁴In his pride the wicked man does not seek him;
    in all his thoughts there is no room for God.^(F)
⁵His ways are always prosperous;
    your laws are rejected by^[b] him;
    he sneers at all his enemies.
⁶He says to himself, “Nothing will ever shake me.”
    He swears, “No one will ever do me harm.”^(G)

⁷His mouth is full^(H) of lies and threats;^(I)
    trouble and evil are under his tongue.^(J)
⁸He lies in wait^(K) near the villages;
    from ambush he murders the innocent.^(L)
His eyes watch in secret for his victims;
⁹    like a lion in cover he lies in wait.
He lies in wait to catch the helpless;^(M)
    he catches the helpless and drags them off in his net.^(N)
¹⁰His victims are crushed,^(O) they collapse;
    they fall under his strength.
¹¹He says to himself, “God will never notice;^(P)
    he covers his face and never sees.”^(Q)

¹²Arise,^(R) Lord! Lift up your hand,^(S) O God.
    Do not forget the helpless.^(T)
¹³Why does the wicked man revile God?^(U)
    Why does he say to himself,
    “He won’t call me to account”?^(V)
¹⁴But you, God, see the trouble^(W) of the afflicted;
    you consider their grief and take it in hand.
The victims commit themselves to you;^(X)
    you are the helper^(Y) of the fatherless.
¹⁵Break the arm of the wicked man;^(Z)
    call the evildoer to account for his wickedness
    that would not otherwise be found out.

¹⁶The Lord is King for ever and ever;^(AA)
    the nations^(AB) will perish from his land.
¹⁷You, Lord, hear the desire of the afflicted;^(AC)
    you encourage them, and you listen to their cry,^(AD)
¹⁸defending the fatherless^(AE) and the oppressed,^(AF)
    so that mere earthly mortals
    will never again strike terror.

Jeremiah 7:16-26

¹⁶“So do not pray for this people nor offer any plea^(A) or petition for them; do not plead with me, for I will not listen^(B) to you. ¹⁷Do you not see what they are doing in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? ¹⁸The children gather wood, the fathers light the fire, and the women knead the dough and make cakes to offer to the Queen of Heaven.^(C) They pour out drink offerings^(D) to other gods to arouse^(E) my anger. ¹⁹But am I the one they are provoking?^(F) declares the Lord. Are they not rather harming themselves, to their own shame?^(G)

²⁰“‘Therefore this is what the Sovereign^(H) Lord says: My anger^(I) and my wrath will be poured^(J) out on this place—on man and beast, on the trees of the field and on the crops of your land—and it will burn and not be quenched.^(K)

²¹“‘This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Go ahead, add your burnt offerings to your other sacrifices^(L) and eat^(M) the meat yourselves! ²²For when I brought your ancestors out of Egypt and spoke to them, I did not just give them commands^(N) about burnt offerings and sacrifices,^(O) ²³but I gave them this command:^(P) Obey^(Q) me, and I will be your God and you will be my people.^(R) Walk in obedience to all^(S) I command you, that it may go well^(T) with you. ²⁴But they did not listen^(U) or pay attention;^(V) instead, they followed the stubborn inclinations of their evil hearts.^(W) They went backward^(X) and not forward. ²⁵From the time your ancestors left Egypt until now, day after day, again and again^(Y) I sent you my servants^(Z) the prophets.^(AA) ²⁶But they did not listen to me or pay attention.^(AB) They were stiff-necked^(AC) and did more evil than their ancestors.’^(AD)

To the Church in Philadelphia

⁷“To the angel of the church in Philadelphia^(A) write:

These are the words of him who is holy^(B) and true,^(C) who holds the key of David.^(D) What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open. ⁸I know your deeds.^(E) See, I have placed before you an open door^(F) that no one can shut. I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.^(G) ⁹I will make those who are of the synagogue of Satan,^(H) who claim to be Jews though they are not,^(I) but are liars—I will make them come and fall down at your feet^(J) and acknowledge that I have loved you.^(K) ¹⁰Since you have kept my command to endure patiently, I will also keep you^(L) from the hour of trial that is going to come on the whole world^(M) to test^(N) the inhabitants of the earth.^(O)

¹¹I am coming soon.^(P) Hold on to what you have,^(Q) so that no one will take your crown.^(R) ¹²The one who is victorious^(S) I will make a pillar^(T) in the temple of my God. Never again will they leave it. I will write on them the name of my God^(U) and the name of the city of my God,^(V) the new Jerusalem,^(W) which is coming down out of heaven from my God; and I will also write on them my new name. ¹³Whoever has ears, let them hear^(X) what the Spirit says to the churches.
