Psalm 119:1-8

Psalm 119^[a]

א Aleph

¹Blessed are those whose ways are blameless,^(A)
    who walk^(B) according to the law of the Lord.^(C)
²Blessed^(D) are those who keep his statutes^(E)
    and seek him^(F) with all their heart—^(G)
³they do no wrong^(H)
    but follow his ways.^(I)
⁴You have laid down precepts^(J)
    that are to be fully obeyed.^(K)
⁵Oh, that my ways were steadfast
    in obeying your decrees!^(L)
⁶Then I would not be put to shame^(M)
    when I consider all your commands.^(N)
⁷I will praise you with an upright heart
    as I learn your righteous laws.^(O)
⁸I will obey your decrees;
    do not utterly forsake me.^(P)

Leviticus 26:34-46

New International Version

³⁴Then the land will enjoy its sabbath years all the time that it lies desolate^(A) and you are in the country of your enemies;^(B) then the land will rest and enjoy its sabbaths. ³⁵All the time that it lies desolate, the land will have the rest^(C) it did not have during the sabbaths you lived in it.

³⁶“‘As for those of you who are left, I will make their hearts so fearful in the lands of their enemies that the sound of a windblown leaf^(D) will put them to flight.^(E) They will run as though fleeing from the sword, and they will fall, even though no one is pursuing them.^(F) ³⁷They will stumble over one another^(G) as though fleeing from the sword, even though no one is pursuing them. So you will not be able to stand before your enemies.^(H) ³⁸You will perish^(I) among the nations; the land of your enemies will devour you.^(J) ³⁹Those of you who are left will waste away in the lands of their enemies because of their sins; also because of their ancestors’^(K) sins they will waste away.^(L)

⁴⁰“‘But if they will confess^(M) their sins^(N) and the sins of their ancestors^(O)—their unfaithfulness and their hostility toward me, ⁴¹which made me hostile^(P) toward them so that I sent them into the land of their enemies—then when their uncircumcised hearts^(Q) are humbled^(R) and they pay^(S) for their sin, ⁴²I will remember my covenant with Jacob^(T) and my covenant with Isaac^(U) and my covenant with Abraham,^(V) and I will remember the land. ⁴³For the land will be deserted^(W) by them and will enjoy its sabbaths while it lies desolate without them. They will pay for their sins because they rejected^(X) my laws and abhorred my decrees.^(Y) ⁴⁴Yet in spite of this, when they are in the land of their enemies,^(Z) I will not reject them or abhor^(AA) them so as to destroy them completely,^(AB) breaking my covenant^(AC) with them. I am the Lord their God. ⁴⁵But for their sake I will remember^(AD) the covenant with their ancestors whom I brought out of Egypt^(AE) in the sight of the nations to be their God. I am the Lord.’”

⁴⁶These are the decrees, the laws and the regulations that the Lord established at Mount Sinai^(AF) between himself and the Israelites through Moses.^(AG)

1 John 2:7-17

New International Version

⁷Dear friends,^(A) I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning.^(B) This old command is the message you have heard. ⁸Yet I am writing you a new command;^(C) its truth is seen in him and in you, because the darkness is passing^(D) and the true light^(E) is already shining.^(F)

⁹Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister^[a]^(G) is still in the darkness.^(H) ¹⁰Anyone who loves their brother and sister^[b] lives in the light,^(I) and there is nothing in them to make them stumble.^(J) ¹¹But anyone who hates a brother or sister^(K) is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness.^(L) They do not know where they are going, because the darkness has blinded them.^(M)

Reasons for Writing

¹²I am writing to you, dear children,^(N)
    because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name.^(O)
¹³I am writing to you, fathers,
    because you know him who is from the beginning.^(P)
I am writing to you, young men,
    because you have overcome^(Q) the evil one.^(R)

¹⁴I write to you, dear children,^(S)
    because you know the Father.
I write to you, fathers,
    because you know him who is from the beginning.^(T)
I write to you, young men,
    because you are strong,^(U)
    and the word of God^(V) lives in you,^(W)
    and you have overcome the evil one.^(X)

On Not Loving the World

¹⁵Do not love the world or anything in the world.^(Y) If anyone loves the world, love for the Father^[c] is not in them.^(Z) ¹⁶For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh,^(AA) the lust of the eyes,^(AB) and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. ¹⁷The world and its desires pass away,^(AC) but whoever does the will of God^(AD) lives forever.
