A truth from which He will not turn back:
“I will set upon your throne one (B)from the fruit of your body.

“One of your own descendants(B)
    I will place on your throne.

12 (A)When your days are finished and you [a](B)lie down with your fathers, (C)I will raise up your [b]descendant after you, who will come from [c]you, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 (D)He shall build a house for My name, and (E)I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 14 (F)I will be a father to him and he will be a son to Me; (G)when he does wrong, I will discipline him with a rod of men and with strokes of sons of mankind, 15 but My favor shall not depart from him, (H)as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from you. 16 (I)Your house and your kingdom shall endure before [d]Me forever; your throne shall be established forever.”’” 17 In accordance with all these words and all of this vision, so Nathan spoke to David.

David’s Prayer

18 Then David the king came in and sat before the Lord, and he said, “(J)Who am I, Lord [e]God, and who are the members of my household, that You have brought me this far? 19 And yet this was insignificant in Your eyes, Lord God, (K)for You have spoken also of the house of Your servant regarding the distant future. And (L)this is the [f]custom of mankind, Lord God. 20 Again what more can David say to You? For (M)You know Your servant, Lord God! 21 (N)For the sake of Your word, and according to Your heart, You have done all this greatness, to let Your servant know. 22 For this reason (O)You are great, Lord God; for (P)there is no one like You, and there is no God except You, (Q)according to all that we have heard with our ears. 23 And (R)what one nation on the earth is like Your people Israel, whom God went to redeem for Himself as a people, and to make a name for Himself, and (S)to do a great thing for You and awesome things for Your land, [g]because of (T)Your people whom (U)You have redeemed for Yourself from Egypt, from other nations and their gods? 24 For (V)You have established for Yourself Your people Israel as Your own people forever, and (W)You, Lord, have become their God. 25 Now then, Lord God, the word that You have spoken about Your servant and his house, confirm it forever, and do just as You have spoken, 26 (X)so that Your name may be great forever, by saying, ‘The Lord of armies is God over Israel’; and may the house of Your servant David be established before You. 27 For You, Lord of armies, God of Israel, have [h]given a revelation to Your servant, saying, ‘(Y)I will build you a house’; therefore Your servant has found [i]courage to pray this prayer to You. 28 Now then, Lord God, You are God, and (Z)Your words are truth; and You have [j]promised this good thing to Your servant. 29 And now, may [k]it please You to bless the house of Your servant, so that it may continue forever before You. For You, Lord God, have spoken; and [l](AA)with Your blessing may the house of Your servant be blessed forever.”

17 Nathan reported to David all the words of this entire revelation.

David’s Prayer(O)

18 Then King David went in and sat before the Lord, and he said:

“Who am I,(P) Sovereign Lord, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? 19 And as if this were not enough in your sight, Sovereign Lord, you have also spoken about the future of the house of your servant—and this decree,(Q) Sovereign Lord, is for a mere human![b]

20 “What more can David say(R) to you? For you know(S) your servant,(T) Sovereign Lord. 21 For the sake of your word and according to your will, you have done this great thing and made it known to your servant.

22 “How great(U) you are,(V) Sovereign Lord! There is no one like(W) you, and there is no God(X) but you, as we have heard with our own ears.(Y) 23 And who is like your people Israel(Z)—the one nation on earth that God went out to redeem as a people for himself, and to make a name(AA) for himself, and to perform great and awesome wonders(AB) by driving out nations and their gods from before your people, whom you redeemed(AC) from Egypt?[c] 24 You have established your people Israel as your very own(AD) forever, and you, Lord, have become their God.(AE)

25 “And now, Lord God, keep forever the promise(AF) you have made concerning your servant and his house. Do as you promised, 26 so that your name(AG) will be great forever. Then people will say, ‘The Lord Almighty is God over Israel!’ And the house of your servant David will be established(AH) in your sight.

27 Lord Almighty, God of Israel, you have revealed this to your servant, saying, ‘I will build a house for you.’ So your servant has found courage to pray this prayer to you. 28 Sovereign Lord, you are God! Your covenant is trustworthy,(AI) and you have promised these good things to your servant. 29 Now be pleased to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue forever in your sight; for you, Sovereign Lord, have spoken, and with your blessing(AJ) the house of your servant will be blessed forever.”

I will establish your [a](C)descendants forever
And build up your (D)throne to all generations.” Selah

The (E)heavens will praise Your wonders, Lord;
Your faithfulness also (F)in the assembly of the (G)holy ones.
For (H)who in the skies is comparable to the Lord?
Who among the [b](I)sons of the mighty is like the Lord,
A God (J)greatly feared in the council of the (K)holy ones,
And (L)awesome above all those who are around Him?
Lord God of armies, (M)who is like You, mighty [c]Lord?
Your faithfulness also surrounds You.
You rule the surging of the sea;
When its waves rise, You (N)calm them.
10 You Yourself crushed [d](O)Rahab like one who is slain;
You (P)scattered Your enemies with [e]Your mighty arm.

11 The (Q)heavens are Yours, the earth also is Yours;
The (R)world and [f]all it contains, You have established them.
12 The (S)north and the south, You have created them;
(T)Tabor and (U)Hermon (V)shout for joy at Your name.
13 You have [g]a strong arm;
Your hand is mighty, Your (W)right hand is exalted.
14 (X)Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne;
(Y)Mercy and [h]truth go before You.
15 Blessed are the people who know the [i](Z)joyful sound!
Lord, they walk in the (AA)light of Your face.
16 In (AB)Your name they rejoice all the day,
And by Your righteousness they are exalted.
17 For You are the glory of (AC)their strength,
And by Your favor [j]our (AD)horn is exalted.
18 For our (AE)shield belongs to the Lord,
[k]And our king to the (AF)Holy One of Israel.

19 [l]Once You spoke in vision to Your godly [m]ones,
And said, “I have [n]given help to one who is (AG)mighty;
I have exalted one (AH)chosen from the people.
20 I have (AI)found My servant David;
With My holy (AJ)oil I have anointed him,
21 With whom (AK)My hand will be established;
My arm also will (AL)strengthen him.
22 The enemy will not [o]deceive him,
Nor will the [p](AM)son of wickedness afflict him.
23 But I will (AN)crush his adversaries before him,
And strike those who hate him.
24 My (AO)faithfulness and My favor will be with him,
And in My name his (AP)horn will be exalted.
25 I will also place his hand (AQ)on the sea,
And his right hand on the rivers.
26 He will call to Me, ‘You are (AR)my Father,
My God, and the (AS)rock of my salvation.’
27 I will also make him My (AT)firstborn,
The (AU)highest of the kings of the earth.
28 I will maintain My (AV)favor for him forever,
And My (AW)covenant shall be confirmed to him.
29 So I will establish his [q](AX)descendants forever,
And his (AY)throne (AZ)as the days of heaven.

30 “If his sons (BA)abandon My Law
And do not walk in My judgments,
31 If they [r]violate My statutes
And do not keep My commandments,
32 Then I will punish their wrongdoing with the (BB)rod,
And their guilt with [s]afflictions.
33 But I will not [t]withhold (BC)My favor from him,
Nor deal falsely in My faithfulness.
34 I will not [u]violate My (BD)covenant,
Nor will I (BE)alter [v]the utterance of My lips.
35 [w]Once I have (BF)sworn by My holiness;
I will not lie to David.
36 His [x](BG)descendants shall endure forever,
And his (BH)throne (BI)as the sun before Me.
37 It shall be established forever (BJ)like the moon,
And a (BK)witness in the sky is faithful.” Selah

38 But You have (BL)rejected and (BM)refused,
You have been full of wrath [y]against Your (BN)anointed.
39 You have [z](BO)repudiated the covenant of Your servant;
You have (BP)profaned (BQ)his crown [aa]in the dust.
40 You have (BR)broken down all his walls;
You have (BS)brought his strongholds to ruin.
41 (BT)All who pass along the way plunder him;
He has become a (BU)disgrace to his neighbors.
42 You have (BV)exalted the right hand of his adversaries;
You have (BW)made all his enemies rejoice.
43 You also turn back the edge of his sword,
And have (BX)not made him stand in battle.
44 You have put an end to his [ab](BY)splendor
And cast his throne to the ground.
45 You have (BZ)shortened the days of his youth;
You have (CA)covered him with shame. Selah

46 (CB)How long, Lord?
Will You hide Yourself forever?
Will Your (CC)wrath burn like fire?
47 (CD)Remember [ac]what my lifespan is;
For what (CE)futility [ad]You have created all the sons of mankind!
48 What man can live and not (CF)see death?
Can he (CG)save his soul from the [ae]power of [af]Sheol? Selah

49 Where are Your former acts of favor, Lord,
Which You (CH)swore to David in Your faithfulness?
50 Remember, Lord, the (CI)taunt against Your servants;
[ag]How I carry in my heart the taunts of all the many peoples,
51 With which (CJ)Your enemies have taunted, Lord,
With which they have taunted the footsteps of (CK)Your anointed.

52 (CL)Blessed be the Lord forever!
Amen and Amen.

The heavens(B) praise your wonders, Lord,
    your faithfulness too, in the assembly(C) of the holy ones.
For who in the skies above can compare with the Lord?
    Who is like the Lord among the heavenly beings?(D)
In the council(E) of the holy ones(F) God is greatly feared;
    he is more awesome than all who surround him.(G)
Who is like you,(H) Lord God Almighty?(I)
    You, Lord, are mighty, and your faithfulness surrounds you.

You rule over the surging sea;
    when its waves mount up, you still them.(J)
10 You crushed Rahab(K) like one of the slain;
    with your strong arm you scattered(L) your enemies.
11 The heavens are yours,(M) and yours also the earth;(N)
    you founded the world and all that is in it.(O)
12 You created the north and the south;
    Tabor(P) and Hermon(Q) sing for joy(R) at your name.
13 Your arm is endowed with power;
    your hand is strong, your right hand exalted.(S)

14 Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne;(T)
    love and faithfulness go before you.(U)
15 Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you,
    who walk(V) in the light(W) of your presence, Lord.
16 They rejoice in your name(X) all day long;
    they celebrate your righteousness.
17 For you are their glory and strength,(Y)
    and by your favor you exalt our horn.[b](Z)
18 Indeed, our shield[c](AA) belongs to the Lord,
    our king(AB) to the Holy One of Israel.

19 Once you spoke in a vision,
    to your faithful people you said:
“I have bestowed strength on a warrior;
    I have raised up a young man from among the people.
20 I have found David(AC) my servant;(AD)
    with my sacred oil(AE) I have anointed(AF) him.
21 My hand will sustain him;
    surely my arm will strengthen him.(AG)
22 The enemy will not get the better of him;(AH)
    the wicked will not oppress(AI) him.
23 I will crush his foes before him(AJ)
    and strike down his adversaries.(AK)
24 My faithful love will be with him,(AL)
    and through my name his horn[d] will be exalted.
25 I will set his hand over the sea,
    his right hand over the rivers.(AM)
26 He will call out to me, ‘You are my Father,(AN)
    my God, the Rock(AO) my Savior.’(AP)
27 And I will appoint him to be my firstborn,(AQ)
    the most exalted(AR) of the kings(AS) of the earth.
28 I will maintain my love to him forever,
    and my covenant with him will never fail.(AT)
29 I will establish his line forever,
    his throne as long as the heavens endure.(AU)

30 “If his sons forsake my law
    and do not follow my statutes,
31 if they violate my decrees
    and fail to keep my commands,
32 I will punish their sin with the rod,
    their iniquity with flogging;(AV)
33 but I will not take my love from him,(AW)
    nor will I ever betray my faithfulness.
34 I will not violate my covenant
    or alter what my lips have uttered.(AX)
35 Once for all, I have sworn by my holiness—
    and I will not lie to David—
36 that his line will continue forever
    and his throne endure before me like the sun;(AY)
37 it will be established forever like the moon,
    the faithful witness in the sky.”(AZ)

38 But you have rejected,(BA) you have spurned,
    you have been very angry with your anointed one.
39 You have renounced the covenant with your servant
    and have defiled his crown in the dust.(BB)
40 You have broken through all his walls(BC)
    and reduced his strongholds(BD) to ruins.
41 All who pass by have plundered(BE) him;
    he has become the scorn of his neighbors.(BF)
42 You have exalted the right hand of his foes;
    you have made all his enemies rejoice.(BG)
43 Indeed, you have turned back the edge of his sword
    and have not supported him in battle.(BH)
44 You have put an end to his splendor
    and cast his throne to the ground.
45 You have cut short(BI) the days of his youth;
    you have covered him with a mantle of shame.(BJ)

46 How long, Lord? Will you hide yourself forever?
    How long will your wrath burn like fire?(BK)
47 Remember how fleeting is my life.(BL)
    For what futility you have created all humanity!
48 Who can live and not see death,
    or who can escape the power of the grave?(BM)
49 Lord, where is your former great love,
    which in your faithfulness you swore to David?
50 Remember, Lord, how your servant has[e] been mocked,(BN)
    how I bear in my heart the taunts of all the nations,
51 the taunts with which your enemies, Lord, have mocked,
    with which they have mocked every step of your anointed one.(BO)

52 Praise be to the Lord forever!
Amen and Amen.(BP)
