Psalm 16

Psalm 16

A miktam^[a] of David.

¹Keep me safe,^(A) my God,
for in you I take refuge.^(B)

²I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord;^(C)
    apart from you I have no good thing.”^(D)
³I say of the holy people^(E) who are in the land,^(F)
    “They are the noble ones in whom is all my delight.”
⁴Those who run after other gods^(G) will suffer^(H) more and more.
    I will not pour out libations of blood to such gods
    or take up their names^(I) on my lips.

⁵Lord, you alone are my portion^(J) and my cup;^(K)
    you make my lot^(L) secure.
⁶The boundary lines^(M) have fallen for me in pleasant places;
    surely I have a delightful inheritance.^(N)
⁷I will praise the Lord, who counsels me;^(O)
    even at night^(P) my heart instructs me.
⁸I keep my eyes always on the Lord.
    With him at my right hand,^(Q) I will not be shaken.^(R)

⁹Therefore my heart is glad^(S) and my tongue rejoices;
    my body also will rest secure,^(T)
¹⁰because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead,^(U)
    nor will you let your faithful^[b] one^(V) see decay.^(W)
¹¹You make known to me the path of life;^(X)
    you will fill me with joy in your presence,^(Y)
    with eternal pleasures^(Z) at your right hand.^(AA)

⁴I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at home in my palace, contented^(A) and prosperous. ⁵I had a dream^(B) that made me afraid. As I was lying in bed,^(C) the images and visions that passed through my mind^(D) terrified me.^(E) ⁶So I commanded that all the wise men of Babylon be brought before me to interpret^(F) the dream for me. ⁷When the magicians,^(G) enchanters, astrologers^[a] and diviners^(H) came, I told them the dream, but they could not interpret it for me.^(I) ⁸Finally, Daniel came into my presence and I told him the dream. (He is called Belteshazzar,^(J) after the name of my god, and the spirit of the holy gods^(K) is in him.)

⁹I said, “Belteshazzar, chief^(L) of the magicians, I know that the spirit of the holy gods^(M) is in you, and no mystery is too difficult for you. Here is my dream; interpret it for me. ¹⁰These are the visions I saw while lying in bed:^(N) I looked, and there before me stood a tree in the middle of the land. Its height was enormous.^(O) ¹¹The tree grew large and strong and its top touched the sky; it was visible to the ends of the earth.^(P) ¹²Its leaves were beautiful, its fruit abundant, and on it was food for all. Under it the wild animals found shelter, and the birds lived in its branches;^(Q) from it every creature was fed.

¹³“In the visions I saw while lying in bed,^(R) I looked, and there before me was a holy one,^(S) a messenger,^[b] coming down from heaven. ¹⁴He called in a loud voice: ‘Cut down the tree^(T) and trim off its branches; strip off its leaves and scatter its fruit. Let the animals flee from under it and the birds from its branches.^(U) ¹⁵But let the stump and its roots, bound with iron and bronze, remain in the ground, in the grass of the field.

“‘Let him be drenched with the dew of heaven, and let him live with the animals among the plants of the earth. ¹⁶Let his mind be changed from that of a man and let him be given the mind of an animal, till seven times^[c] pass by for him.^(V)

¹⁷“‘The decision is announced by messengers, the holy ones declare the verdict, so that the living may know that the Most High^(W) is sovereign^(X) over all kingdoms on earth and gives them to anyone he wishes and sets over them the lowliest^(Y) of people.’

¹⁸“This is the dream that I, King Nebuchadnezzar, had. Now, Belteshazzar, tell me what it means, for none of the wise men in my kingdom can interpret it for me.^(Z) But you can,^(AA) because the spirit of the holy gods^(AB) is in you.”^(AC)

Final Charge to Timothy

¹¹But you, man of God,^(A) flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness,^(B) faith, love,^(C) endurance and gentleness. ¹²Fight the good fight^(D) of the faith. Take hold of^(E) the eternal life^(F) to which you were called when you made your good confession^(G) in the presence of many witnesses. ¹³In the sight of God, who gives life to everything, and of Christ Jesus, who while testifying before Pontius Pilate^(H) made the good confession,^(I) I charge you^(J) ¹⁴to keep this command without spot or blame^(K) until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ,^(L) ¹⁵which God will bring about in his own time^(M)—God, the blessed^(N) and only Ruler,^(O) the King of kings and Lord of lords,^(P) ¹⁶who alone is immortal^(Q) and who lives in unapproachable light,^(R) whom no one has seen or can see.^(S) To him be honor and might forever. Amen.^(T)

¹⁷Command those who are rich^(U) in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth,^(V) which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God,^(W) who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.^(X) ¹⁸Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds,^(Y) and to be generous and willing to share.^(Z) ¹⁹In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves^(AA) as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of^(AB) the life that is truly life.

²⁰Timothy, guard what has been entrusted^(AC) to your care. Turn away from godless chatter^(AD) and the opposing ideas of what is falsely called knowledge, ²¹which some have professed and in so doing have departed from the faith.^(AE)
