Psalm 5

Psalm 5^[a]

For the director of music. For pipes. A psalm of David.

¹Listen^(A) to my words, Lord,
    consider my lament.^(B)
²Hear my cry for help,^(C)
    my King and my God,^(D)
    for to you I pray.

³In the morning,^(E) Lord, you hear my voice;
    in the morning I lay my requests before you
    and wait expectantly.^(F)
⁴For you are not a God who is pleased with wickedness;
    with you, evil people^(G) are not welcome.
⁵The arrogant^(H) cannot stand^(I)
    in your presence.
You hate^(J) all who do wrong;
⁶    you destroy those who tell lies.^(K)
The bloodthirsty and deceitful
    you, Lord, detest.
⁷But I, by your great love,
    can come into your house;
in reverence^(L) I bow down^(M)
    toward your holy temple.^(N)

⁸Lead me, Lord, in your righteousness^(O)
    because of my enemies—
    make your way straight^(P) before me.
⁹Not a word from their mouth can be trusted;
    their heart is filled with malice.
Their throat is an open grave;^(Q)
    with their tongues they tell lies.^(R)
¹⁰Declare them guilty, O God!
    Let their intrigues be their downfall.
Banish them for their many sins,^(S)
    for they have rebelled^(T) against you.
¹¹But let all who take refuge in you be glad;
    let them ever sing for joy.^(U)
Spread your protection over them,
    that those who love your name^(V) may rejoice in you.^(W)

¹²Surely, Lord, you bless the righteous;^(X)
you surround them^(Y) with your favor as with a shield.^(Z)

¹⁸“Yet even in those days,” declares the Lord, “I will not destroy^(A) you completely. ¹⁹And when the people ask,^(B) ‘Why has the Lord our God done all this to us?’ you will tell them, ‘As you have forsaken me and served foreign gods^(C) in your own land, so now you will serve foreigners^(D) in a land not your own.’

²⁰“Announce this to the descendants of Jacob
    and proclaim^(E) it in Judah:
²¹Hear this, you foolish and senseless people,^(F)
    who have eyes^(G) but do not see,
    who have ears but do not hear:^(H)
²²Should you not fear^(I) me?” declares the Lord.
    “Should you not tremble^(J) in my presence?
I made the sand a boundary for the sea,^(K)
    an everlasting barrier it cannot cross.
The waves may roll, but they cannot prevail;
    they may roar,^(L) but they cannot cross it.
²³But these people have stubborn and rebellious^(M) hearts;
    they have turned aside^(N) and gone away.
²⁴They do not say to themselves,
    ‘Let us fear^(O) the Lord our God,
who gives autumn and spring rains^(P) in season,
    who assures us of the regular weeks of harvest.’^(Q)
²⁵Your wrongdoings have kept these away;
    your sins have deprived you of good.^(R)

²⁶“Among my people are the wicked^(S)
    who lie in wait^(T) like men who snare birds
    and like those who set traps^(U) to catch people.
²⁷Like cages full of birds,
    their houses are full of deceit;^(V)
they have become rich^(W) and powerful
²⁸    and have grown fat^(X) and sleek.
Their evil deeds have no limit;
    they do not seek justice.
They do not promote the case of the fatherless;^(Y)
    they do not defend the just cause of the poor.^(Z)
²⁹Should I not punish them for this?”
    declares the Lord.
“Should I not avenge^(AA) myself
    on such a nation as this?

³⁰“A horrible^(AB) and shocking thing
    has happened in the land:
³¹The prophets prophesy lies,^(AC)
    the priests^(AD) rule by their own authority,
and my people love it this way.
    But what will you do in the end?^(AE)

¹³And we also thank God continually^(A) because, when you received the word of God,^(B) which you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human word, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is indeed at work in you who believe. ¹⁴For you, brothers and sisters, became imitators^(C) of God’s churches in Judea,^(D) which are in Christ Jesus: You suffered from your own people^(E) the same things those churches suffered from the Jews ¹⁵who killed the Lord Jesus^(F) and the prophets^(G) and also drove us out. They displease God and are hostile to everyone ¹⁶in their effort to keep us from speaking to the Gentiles^(H) so that they may be saved. In this way they always heap up their sins to the limit.^(I) The wrath of God has come upon them at last.^[a]

Paul’s Longing to See the Thessalonians

¹⁷But, brothers and sisters, when we were orphaned by being separated from you for a short time (in person, not in thought),^(J) out of our intense longing we made every effort to see you.^(K) ¹⁸For we wanted to come to you—certainly I, Paul, did, again and again—but Satan^(L) blocked our way.^(M) ¹⁹For what is our hope, our joy, or the crown^(N) in which we will glory^(O) in the presence of our Lord Jesus when he comes?^(P) Is it not you? ²⁰Indeed, you are our glory^(Q) and joy.
