God Will Judge with Equity

To the choirmaster: according to (A)Do Not Destroy. (B)A Psalm of Asaph. A Song.

75 We give thanks to you, O God;
    we give thanks, for your name is (C)near.
We[a] recount your wondrous deeds.

“At (D)the set time that I appoint
    I will judge (E)with equity.
When the earth (F)totters, and all its inhabitants,
    it is I who keep steady its (G)pillars. Selah
I say to the boastful, ‘Do not boast,’
    and to the wicked, (H)‘Do not lift up your horn;
do not lift up your horn on high,
    or speak with haughty neck.’”

For not from the east or from the west
    and not from the wilderness comes (I)lifting up,
but it is (J)God who executes judgment,
    (K)putting down one and lifting up another.
(L)For in the hand of the Lord there is (M)a cup
    with foaming wine, (N)well mixed,
and he pours out from it,
    and all the wicked of the earth
    shall (O)drain it down to the dregs.

But I will declare it forever;
    I will sing praises to the God of Jacob.
10 (P)All the horns of the wicked I will cut off,
    (Q)but the horns of the righteous shall be lifted up.

Who Can Stand Before You?

To the choirmaster: with (R)stringed instruments. A Psalm of (S)Asaph. A Song.

76 In Judah God is (T)known;
    his name is great in Israel.
His (U)abode has been established in (V)Salem,
    his (W)dwelling place in Zion.
There he (X)broke the flashing arrows,
    the shield, the sword, and the weapons of war. Selah

Glorious are you, more majestic
    (Y)than the mountains full of (Z)prey.
(AA)The stouthearted were stripped of their spoil;
    (AB)they sank into sleep;
all the men of war
    were unable to use their hands.
At your rebuke, O God of Jacob,
    both (AC)rider and horse lay stunned.

(AD)But you, you are to be feared!
    Who can (AE)stand before you
    when once your anger is roused?
From the heavens you uttered judgment;
    (AF)the earth feared and was still,
when God (AG)arose to establish judgment,
    to save all the humble of the earth. Selah

10 Surely (AH)the wrath of man shall praise you;
    the remnant[b] of wrath you will put on like a belt.
11 (AI)Make your vows to the Lord your God and perform them;
    let all around him (AJ)bring gifts
    to him who (AK)is to be feared,
12 who (AL)cuts off the spirit of princes,
    who (AM)is to be feared by the kings of the earth.

In the Day of Trouble I Seek the Lord

To the choirmaster: according to (AN)Jeduthun. A Psalm of (AO)Asaph.

77 I (AP)cry aloud to God,
    aloud to God, and he will hear me.
(AQ)In the day of my trouble I seek the Lord;
    in (AR)the night my (AS)hand is stretched out without wearying;
    my soul (AT)refuses to be comforted.
When I remember God, I (AU)moan;
    when I meditate, my spirit faints. Selah

You hold my eyelids open;
    I am so (AV)troubled that I cannot speak.
I consider (AW)the days of old,
    the years long ago.
I said,[c] “Let me remember my (AX)song in the night;
    let me (AY)meditate in my heart.”
    Then my spirit made a diligent search:
“Will the Lord (AZ)spurn forever,
    and never again (BA)be favorable?
Has his steadfast love forever ceased?
    Are his (BB)promises at an end for all time?
(BC)Has God forgotten to be gracious?
    (BD)Has he in anger shut up his compassion?” Selah

10 Then I said, “I will appeal to this,
    to the years of the (BE)right hand of the Most High.”[d]

11 I will remember the deeds of the Lord;
    yes, I will (BF)remember your wonders of old.
12 I will ponder all your (BG)work,
    and meditate on your (BH)mighty deeds.
13 Your way, O God, is (BI)holy.
    (BJ)What god is great like our God?
14 You are the God who (BK)works wonders;
    you have (BL)made known your might among the peoples.
15 You (BM)with your arm redeemed your people,
    the children of Jacob and Joseph. Selah

16 When (BN)the waters saw you, O God,
    when the waters saw you, they were afraid;
    indeed, the deep trembled.
17 The clouds poured out water;
    the skies (BO)gave forth thunder;
    your (BP)arrows flashed on every side.
18 (BQ)The crash of your thunder was in the whirlwind;
    (BR)your lightnings lighted up the world;
    the earth (BS)trembled and shook.
19 Your (BT)way was through the sea,
    your path through the great waters;
    yet your footprints (BU)were unseen.[e]
20 You (BV)led your people like a flock
    by the hand of Moses and Aaron.

Tell the Coming Generation

A Maskil[f] of (BW)Asaph.

78 (BX)Give ear, O my people, to my teaching;
    incline your ears to the words of my mouth!
(BY)I will open my mouth (BZ)in a parable;
    I will utter dark sayings from of old,
things that we have heard and known,
    that our (CA)fathers have told us.
We will not (CB)hide them from their children,
    but (CC)tell to the coming generation
the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might,
    and (CD)the wonders that he has done.

He established (CE)a testimony in (CF)Jacob
    and appointed a law in (CG)Israel,
which he commanded our fathers
    to teach to their children,
that (CH)the next generation might know them,
    the children yet unborn,
and arise and tell them to their children,
    so that they should set their hope in God
and not forget (CI)the works of God,
    but (CJ)keep his commandments;
and that they should not be (CK)like their fathers,
    (CL)a stubborn and rebellious generation,
a generation (CM)whose heart was not steadfast,
    whose spirit was not faithful to God.

The Ephraimites, armed with[g] the bow,
    (CN)turned back on the day of battle.
10 They (CO)did not keep God's covenant,
    but refused to walk according to his law.
11 They (CP)forgot his works
    and (CQ)the wonders that he had shown them.
12 In the sight of their fathers (CR)he performed wonders
    in the land of Egypt, in (CS)the fields of Zoan.
13 He (CT)divided the sea and let them pass through it,
    and made the waters (CU)stand like a heap.
14 (CV)In the daytime he led them with a cloud,
    and all the night with a fiery light.
15 He (CW)split rocks in the wilderness
    and gave them drink abundantly as from the deep.
16 He made streams come out of (CX)the rock
    and caused waters to flow down like rivers.

17 Yet they sinned still more against him,
    (CY)rebelling against the Most High in the desert.
18 They (CZ)tested God in their heart
    by demanding the food they craved.
19 They spoke against God, saying,
    (DA)“Can God (DB)spread a table in the wilderness?
20 (DC)He struck the rock so that water gushed out
    and streams overflowed.
Can he also give bread
    or provide meat for his people?”

21 Therefore, when the Lord heard, he was full of wrath;
    (DD)a fire was kindled against Jacob;
    his anger rose against Israel,
22 because they (DE)did not believe in God
    and did not trust his saving power.
23 Yet he commanded the skies above
    and (DF)opened the doors of heaven,
24 and he (DG)rained down on them manna to eat
    and gave them (DH)the grain of heaven.
25 Man ate of the bread of (DI)the angels;
    he sent them food (DJ)in abundance.
26 He (DK)caused the east wind to blow in the heavens,
    and by his power he led out the south wind;
27 he rained meat on them like (DL)dust,
    winged birds like (DM)the sand of the seas;
28 he (DN)let them fall in the midst of their camp,
    all around their dwellings.
29 And they (DO)ate and were well filled,
    for he gave them what they (DP)craved.
30 But before they had satisfied their craving,
    (DQ)while the food was still in their mouths,
31 the anger of God rose against them,
    and he killed (DR)the strongest of them
    and laid low (DS)the young men of Israel.

32 In spite of all this, they (DT)still sinned;
    (DU)despite his wonders, they did not believe.
33 So he made (DV)their days (DW)vanish like[h] a breath,[i]
    and their years in terror.
34 When he killed them, they (DX)sought him;
    they repented and sought God earnestly.
35 They remembered that God was their (DY)rock,
    the Most High God their (DZ)redeemer.
36 But they (EA)flattered him with their mouths;
    they (EB)lied to him with their tongues.
37 Their (EC)heart was not (ED)steadfast toward him;
    they were not faithful to his covenant.
38 Yet he, being (EE)compassionate,
    (EF)atoned for their iniquity
    and did not destroy them;
he restrained his anger often
    and did not stir up all his wrath.
39 He (EG)remembered that they were but (EH)flesh,
    (EI)a wind that passes and comes not again.
40 How often they (EJ)rebelled against him in the wilderness
    and (EK)grieved him in (EL)the desert!
41 They (EM)tested God again and again
    and provoked (EN)the Holy One of Israel.
42 They (EO)did not remember his power[j]
    or the day when he redeemed them from the foe,
43 (EP)when he performed his (EQ)signs in Egypt
    and his (ER)marvels in (ES)the fields of Zoan.
44 He (ET)turned their rivers to blood,
    so that they could not drink of their streams.
45 He sent among them swarms of (EU)flies, which devoured them,
    and (EV)frogs, which destroyed them.
46 He gave their crops to (EW)the destroying locust
    and the fruit of their labor to the locust.
47 He destroyed their vines with (EX)hail
    and their sycamores with frost.
48 He gave over their (EY)cattle to the hail
    and their flocks to thunderbolts.
49 He let loose on them his burning anger,
    wrath, indignation, and distress,
    a company of (EZ)destroying angels.
50 He made a path for his anger;
    he did not spare them from death,
    but gave their lives over to the plague.
51 He struck down every (FA)firstborn in Egypt,
    the firstfruits of their strength in the tents of (FB)Ham.
52 Then he led out his people (FC)like sheep
    and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.
53 (FD)He led them in safety, so that they (FE)were not afraid,
    but (FF)the sea overwhelmed their enemies.
54 And he brought them to his (FG)holy land,
    (FH)to the mountain which his right hand had (FI)won.
55 He (FJ)drove out nations before them;
    he (FK)apportioned them for a possession
    and settled the tribes of Israel in their tents.

56 Yet they (FL)tested and (FM)rebelled against the Most High God
    and did not keep his testimonies,
57 but turned away and acted treacherously like their fathers;
    they twisted like (FN)a deceitful bow.
58 For they (FO)provoked him to anger with their (FP)high places;
    they (FQ)moved him to jealousy with their (FR)idols.
59 When God heard, he was full of (FS)wrath,
    and he utterly rejected Israel.
60 He (FT)forsook his dwelling at (FU)Shiloh,
    the tent where he dwelt among mankind,
61 and delivered his (FV)power to captivity,
    his (FW)glory to the hand of the foe.
62 He (FX)gave his people over to the sword
    and (FY)vented his wrath on his heritage.
63 (FZ)Fire devoured their young men,
    and their young women had no (GA)marriage song.
64 Their (GB)priests fell by the sword,
    and their (GC)widows made no lamentation.
65 Then the Lord (GD)awoke as from sleep,
    like a strong man shouting because of wine.
66 And he (GE)put his adversaries to rout;
    he put them to everlasting shame.

67 He rejected the tent of (GF)Joseph;
    he did not choose the tribe of Ephraim,
68 but he chose the tribe of Judah,
    Mount Zion, which he (GG)loves.
69 He (GH)built his sanctuary like the high heavens,
    like the earth, which he has founded forever.
70 He (GI)chose David his servant
    and took him from the sheepfolds;
71 from (GJ)following the nursing ewes he brought him
    to (GK)shepherd Jacob his people,
    Israel his (GL)inheritance.
72 With (GM)upright heart he shepherded them
    and (GN)guided them with his skillful hand.

Psalm 75[a]

For the director of music. To the tune of “Do Not Destroy.” A psalm of Asaph. A song.

We praise you, God,
    we praise you, for your Name is near;(A)
    people tell of your wonderful deeds.(B)

You say, “I choose the appointed time;(C)
    it is I who judge with equity.(D)
When the earth and all its people quake,(E)
    it is I who hold its pillars(F) firm.[b]
To the arrogant(G) I say, ‘Boast no more,’(H)
    and to the wicked, ‘Do not lift up your horns.[c](I)
Do not lift your horns against heaven;
    do not speak so defiantly.(J)’”

No one from the east or the west
    or from the desert can exalt themselves.
It is God who judges:(K)
    He brings one down, he exalts another.(L)
In the hand of the Lord is a cup
    full of foaming wine mixed(M) with spices;
he pours it out, and all the wicked of the earth
    drink it down to its very dregs.(N)

As for me, I will declare(O) this forever;
    I will sing(P) praise to the God of Jacob,(Q)
10 who says, “I will cut off the horns of all the wicked,
    but the horns of the righteous will be lifted up.”(R)

Psalm 76[d]

For the director of music. With stringed instruments. A psalm of Asaph. A song.

God is renowned in Judah;
    in Israel his name is great.(S)
His tent is in Salem,(T)
    his dwelling place in Zion.(U)
There he broke the flashing arrows,(V)
    the shields and the swords, the weapons of war.[e](W)

You are radiant with light,(X)
    more majestic than mountains rich with game.
The valiant(Y) lie plundered,
    they sleep their last sleep;(Z)
not one of the warriors
    can lift his hands.
At your rebuke,(AA) God of Jacob,
    both horse and chariot(AB) lie still.

It is you alone who are to be feared.(AC)
    Who can stand(AD) before you when you are angry?(AE)
From heaven you pronounced judgment,
    and the land feared(AF) and was quiet—
when you, God, rose up to judge,(AG)
    to save all the afflicted(AH) of the land.
10 Surely your wrath against mankind brings you praise,(AI)
    and the survivors of your wrath are restrained.[f]

11 Make vows to the Lord your God and fulfill them;(AJ)
    let all the neighboring lands
    bring gifts(AK) to the One to be feared.
12 He breaks the spirit of rulers;
    he is feared by the kings of the earth.

Psalm 77[g]

For the director of music. For Jeduthun. Of Asaph. A psalm.

I cried out to God(AL) for help;
    I cried out to God to hear me.
When I was in distress,(AM) I sought the Lord;
    at night(AN) I stretched out untiring hands,(AO)
    and I would not be comforted.(AP)

I remembered(AQ) you, God, and I groaned;(AR)
    I meditated, and my spirit grew faint.[h](AS)
You kept my eyes from closing;
    I was too troubled to speak.(AT)
I thought about the former days,(AU)
    the years of long ago;
I remembered my songs in the night.
    My heart meditated and my spirit asked:

“Will the Lord reject forever?(AV)
    Will he never show his favor(AW) again?
Has his unfailing love(AX) vanished forever?
    Has his promise(AY) failed for all time?
Has God forgotten to be merciful?(AZ)
    Has he in anger withheld his compassion?(BA)

10 Then I thought, “To this I will appeal:
    the years when the Most High stretched out his right hand.(BB)
11 I will remember the deeds of the Lord;
    yes, I will remember your miracles(BC) of long ago.
12 I will consider(BD) all your works
    and meditate on all your mighty deeds.”(BE)

13 Your ways, God, are holy.
    What god is as great as our God?(BF)
14 You are the God who performs miracles;(BG)
    you display your power among the peoples.
15 With your mighty arm you redeemed your people,(BH)
    the descendants of Jacob and Joseph.

16 The waters(BI) saw you, God,
    the waters saw you and writhed;(BJ)
    the very depths were convulsed.
17 The clouds poured down water,(BK)
    the heavens resounded with thunder;(BL)
    your arrows(BM) flashed back and forth.
18 Your thunder was heard in the whirlwind,(BN)
    your lightning(BO) lit up the world;
    the earth trembled and quaked.(BP)
19 Your path(BQ) led through the sea,(BR)
    your way through the mighty waters,
    though your footprints were not seen.

20 You led your people(BS) like a flock(BT)
    by the hand of Moses and Aaron.(BU)

Psalm 78

A maskil[i] of Asaph.

My people, hear my teaching;(BV)
    listen to the words of my mouth.
I will open my mouth with a parable;(BW)
    I will utter hidden things, things from of old—
things we have heard and known,
    things our ancestors have told us.(BX)
We will not hide them from their descendants;(BY)
    we will tell the next generation(BZ)
the praiseworthy deeds(CA) of the Lord,
    his power, and the wonders(CB) he has done.
He decreed statutes(CC) for Jacob(CD)
    and established the law in Israel,
which he commanded our ancestors
    to teach their children,
so the next generation would know them,
    even the children yet to be born,(CE)
    and they in turn would tell their children.
Then they would put their trust in God
    and would not forget(CF) his deeds
    but would keep his commands.(CG)
They would not be like their ancestors(CH)
    a stubborn(CI) and rebellious(CJ) generation,
whose hearts were not loyal to God,
    whose spirits were not faithful to him.

The men of Ephraim, though armed with bows,(CK)
    turned back on the day of battle;(CL)
10 they did not keep God’s covenant(CM)
    and refused to live by his law.(CN)
11 They forgot what he had done,(CO)
    the wonders he had shown them.
12 He did miracles(CP) in the sight of their ancestors
    in the land of Egypt,(CQ) in the region of Zoan.(CR)
13 He divided the sea(CS) and led them through;
    he made the water stand up like a wall.(CT)
14 He guided them with the cloud by day
    and with light from the fire all night.(CU)
15 He split the rocks(CV) in the wilderness
    and gave them water as abundant as the seas;
16 he brought streams out of a rocky crag
    and made water flow down like rivers.

17 But they continued to sin(CW) against him,
    rebelling in the wilderness against the Most High.
18 They willfully put God to the test(CX)
    by demanding the food they craved.(CY)
19 They spoke against God;(CZ)
    they said, “Can God really
    spread a table in the wilderness?
20 True, he struck the rock,
    and water gushed out,(DA)
    streams flowed abundantly,
but can he also give us bread?
    Can he supply meat(DB) for his people?”
21 When the Lord heard them, he was furious;
    his fire broke out(DC) against Jacob,
    and his wrath rose against Israel,
22 for they did not believe in God
    or trust(DD) in his deliverance.
23 Yet he gave a command to the skies above
    and opened the doors of the heavens;(DE)
24 he rained down manna(DF) for the people to eat,
    he gave them the grain of heaven.
25 Human beings ate the bread of angels;
    he sent them all the food they could eat.
26 He let loose the east wind(DG) from the heavens
    and by his power made the south wind blow.
27 He rained meat down on them like dust,
    birds(DH) like sand on the seashore.
28 He made them come down inside their camp,
    all around their tents.
29 They ate till they were gorged—(DI)
    he had given them what they craved.
30 But before they turned from what they craved,
    even while the food was still in their mouths,(DJ)
31 God’s anger rose against them;
    he put to death the sturdiest(DK) among them,
    cutting down the young men of Israel.

32 In spite of all this, they kept on sinning;(DL)
    in spite of his wonders,(DM) they did not believe.(DN)
33 So he ended their days in futility(DO)
    and their years in terror.
34 Whenever God slew them, they would seek(DP) him;
    they eagerly turned to him again.
35 They remembered that God was their Rock,(DQ)
    that God Most High was their Redeemer.(DR)
36 But then they would flatter him with their mouths,(DS)
    lying to him with their tongues;
37 their hearts were not loyal(DT) to him,
    they were not faithful to his covenant.
38 Yet he was merciful;(DU)
    he forgave(DV) their iniquities(DW)
    and did not destroy them.
Time after time he restrained his anger(DX)
    and did not stir up his full wrath.
39 He remembered that they were but flesh,(DY)
    a passing breeze(DZ) that does not return.

40 How often they rebelled(EA) against him in the wilderness(EB)
    and grieved him(EC) in the wasteland!
41 Again and again they put God to the test;(ED)
    they vexed the Holy One of Israel.(EE)
42 They did not remember(EF) his power—
    the day he redeemed them from the oppressor,(EG)
43 the day he displayed his signs(EH) in Egypt,
    his wonders(EI) in the region of Zoan.
44 He turned their river into blood;(EJ)
    they could not drink from their streams.
45 He sent swarms of flies(EK) that devoured them,
    and frogs(EL) that devastated them.
46 He gave their crops to the grasshopper,(EM)
    their produce to the locust.(EN)
47 He destroyed their vines with hail(EO)
    and their sycamore-figs with sleet.
48 He gave over their cattle to the hail,
    their livestock(EP) to bolts of lightning.
49 He unleashed against them his hot anger,(EQ)
    his wrath, indignation and hostility—
    a band of destroying angels.(ER)
50 He prepared a path for his anger;
    he did not spare them from death
    but gave them over to the plague.
51 He struck down all the firstborn of Egypt,(ES)
    the firstfruits of manhood in the tents of Ham.(ET)
52 But he brought his people out like a flock;(EU)
    he led them like sheep through the wilderness.
53 He guided them safely, so they were unafraid;
    but the sea engulfed(EV) their enemies.(EW)
54 And so he brought them to the border of his holy land,
    to the hill country his right hand(EX) had taken.
55 He drove out nations(EY) before them
    and allotted their lands to them as an inheritance;(EZ)
    he settled the tribes of Israel in their homes.

56 But they put God to the test
    and rebelled against the Most High;
    they did not keep his statutes.
57 Like their ancestors(FA) they were disloyal and faithless,
    as unreliable as a faulty bow.(FB)
58 They angered him(FC) with their high places;(FD)
    they aroused his jealousy with their idols.(FE)
59 When God heard(FF) them, he was furious;(FG)
    he rejected Israel(FH) completely.
60 He abandoned the tabernacle of Shiloh,(FI)
    the tent he had set up among humans.(FJ)
61 He sent the ark of his might(FK) into captivity,(FL)
    his splendor into the hands of the enemy.
62 He gave his people over to the sword;(FM)
    he was furious with his inheritance.(FN)
63 Fire consumed(FO) their young men,
    and their young women had no wedding songs;(FP)
64 their priests were put to the sword,(FQ)
    and their widows could not weep.

65 Then the Lord awoke as from sleep,(FR)
    as a warrior wakes from the stupor of wine.
66 He beat back his enemies;
    he put them to everlasting shame.(FS)
67 Then he rejected the tents of Joseph,
    he did not choose the tribe of Ephraim;(FT)
68 but he chose the tribe of Judah,(FU)
    Mount Zion,(FV) which he loved.
69 He built his sanctuary(FW) like the heights,
    like the earth that he established forever.
70 He chose David(FX) his servant
    and took him from the sheep pens;
71 from tending the sheep(FY) he brought him
    to be the shepherd(FZ) of his people Jacob,
    of Israel his inheritance.
72 And David shepherded them with integrity of heart;(GA)
    with skillful hands he led them.
