³⁸ But He, being ^(A)compassionate, ^[a](B)forgave their wrongdoing and did not destroy them;
And often He ^[b](C)restrained His anger
And did not stir up all His wrath.

⁴³ Many times He would ^(A)rescue them;
They, however, were rebellious in their ^(B)plan,
And they ^(C)sank down into their guilt.

⁴⁴ Nevertheless He looked at their distress
When He ^(D)heard their cry;
⁴⁵ And He ^(E)remembered His covenant for their sake,
And ^[a](F)relented ^(G)according to the greatness of His mercy.
