Psalm 80^[a]

For the director of music. To the tune of “The Lilies of the Covenant.” Of Asaph. A psalm.

¹Hear us, Shepherd of Israel,
    you who lead Joseph like a flock.^(A)
You who sit enthroned between the cherubim,^(B)
    shine forth ²before Ephraim, Benjamin and Manasseh.^(C)
Awaken^(D) your might;
    come and save us.^(E)

⁸You transplanted a vine^(A) from Egypt;
    you drove out^(B) the nations and planted^(C) it.
⁹You cleared the ground for it,
    and it took root and filled the land.
¹⁰The mountains were covered with its shade,
    the mighty cedars with its branches.
¹¹Its branches reached as far as the Sea,^[a]
    its shoots as far as the River.^[b]^(D)

¹²Why have you broken down its walls^(E)
    so that all who pass by pick its grapes?
¹³Boars from the forest ravage^(F) it,
    and insects from the fields feed on it.
¹⁴Return to us, God Almighty!
    Look down from heaven and see!^(G)
Watch over this vine,
¹⁵    the root your right hand has planted,
    the son^[c] you have raised up for yourself.

¹⁶Your vine is cut down, it is burned with fire;^(H)
    at your rebuke^(I) your people perish.
¹⁷Let your hand rest on the man at your right hand,
    the son of man^(J) you have raised up for yourself.
¹⁸Then we will not turn away from you;
    revive^(K) us, and we will call on your name.

¹⁹Restore us, Lord God Almighty;
make your face shine on us,
that we may be saved.

¹⁸In that day^(A) the Lord will snatch away their finery: the bangles and headbands and crescent necklaces,^(B) ¹⁹the earrings and bracelets^(C) and veils,^(D) ²⁰the headdresses^(E) and anklets and sashes, the perfume bottles and charms, ²¹the signet rings and nose rings,^(F) ²²the fine robes and the capes and cloaks,^(G) the purses ²³and mirrors, and the linen garments^(H) and tiaras^(I) and shawls.

²⁴Instead of fragrance^(J) there will be a stench;^(K)
    instead of a sash,^(L) a rope;
instead of well-dressed hair, baldness;^(M)
    instead of fine clothing, sackcloth;^(N)
    instead of beauty,^(O) branding.^(P)
²⁵Your men will fall by the sword,^(Q)
    your warriors in battle.^(R)
²⁶The gates^(S) of Zion will lament and mourn;^(T)
    destitute,^(U) she will sit on the ground.^(V)

4 ¹In that day^(W) seven women
    will take hold of one man^(X)
and say, “We will eat our own food^(Y)
    and provide our own clothes;
only let us be called by your name.
    Take away our disgrace!”^(Z)

The Branch of the Lord

²In that day^(AA) the Branch of the Lord^(AB) will be beautiful^(AC) and glorious, and the fruit^(AD) of the land will be the pride and glory^(AE) of the survivors^(AF) in Israel. ³Those who are left in Zion,^(AG) who remain^(AH) in Jerusalem, will be called holy,^(AI) all who are recorded^(AJ) among the living in Jerusalem. ⁴The Lord will wash away the filth^(AK) of the women of Zion;^(AL) he will cleanse^(AM) the bloodstains^(AN) from Jerusalem by a spirit^[a] of judgment^(AO) and a spirit^[b] of fire.^(AP) ⁵Then the Lord will create^(AQ) over all of Mount Zion^(AR) and over those who assemble there a cloud of smoke by day and a glow of flaming fire by night;^(AS) over everything the glory^[c]^(AT) will be a canopy.^(AU) ⁶It will be a shelter^(AV) and shade from the heat of the day, and a refuge^(AW) and hiding place from the storm^(AX) and rain.

¹⁵“So when you see standing in the holy place^(A) ‘the abomination that causes desolation,’^[a]^(B) spoken of through the prophet Daniel—let the reader understand— ¹⁶then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. ¹⁷Let no one on the housetop^(C) go down to take anything out of the house. ¹⁸Let no one in the field go back to get their cloak. ¹⁹How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers!^(D) ²⁰Pray that your flight will not take place in winter or on the Sabbath. ²¹For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now—and never to be equaled again.^(E)

²²“If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect^(F) those days will be shortened. ²³At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah!’ or, ‘There he is!’ do not believe it.^(G) ²⁴For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders^(H) to deceive, if possible, even the elect. ²⁵See, I have told you ahead of time.

²⁶“So if anyone tells you, ‘There he is, out in the wilderness,’ do not go out; or, ‘Here he is, in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it. ²⁷For as lightning^(I) that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming^(J) of the Son of Man.^(K)
