They have said, “Come, and (A)let’s wipe them out [a]as a nation,

For they have [b](C)conspired together with one mind;
They make a covenant against You:
The tents of (D)Edom and the (E)Ishmaelites,
(F)Moab and the (G)Hagrites;
(H)Gebal, (I)Ammon, and (J)Amalek,
(K)Philistia with the inhabitants of (L)Tyre;
(M)Assyria also has joined them;
They have become [c]a help to the (N)children of Lot. Selah

Prophecy against Edom

Concerning (A)Edom.
This is what the Lord of armies says:
“Is there no longer any (B)wisdom in (C)Teman?
Has good advice been lost by the prudent?
Has their wisdom decayed?
Flee away, turn back, dwell in the depths,
You inhabitants of (D)Dedan,
For I [a]will bring the (E)disaster of Esau upon him
At the time I [b]punish him.
(F)If grape pickers came to you,
Would they not leave gleanings?
If thieves came by night,
They would destroy only what was sufficient for them.
10 But I have (G)stripped Esau bare,
I have uncovered his hiding places
So that he will not be able to conceal himself;
His [c]offspring have been destroyed along with his [d]brothers
And his neighbors, and (H)he no longer exists.
11 Leave your [e](I)orphans behind, I will keep them alive;
And let your (J)widows trust in Me.”

12 For this is what the Lord says: “Behold, those [f]who were not sentenced to drink the (K)cup will certainly drink it, so are you the one who will be held (L)completely blameless? You will not be held blameless, but you will certainly drink it. 13 For I have (M)sworn by Myself,” declares the Lord, “that (N)Bozrah will become an (O)object of horror, a disgrace, a wasteland, and a curse; and all its cities will become permanent ruins.”

14 I have (P)heard a message from the Lord,
And a (Q)messenger is being sent among the nations, saying,
(R)Gather yourselves together and come against her,
And rise up for battle!”
15 “For behold, I have made you small among the nations,
Despised among people.
16 As for the terror you cause,
The arrogance of your heart has deceived you,
You who live in the clefts of [g]the (S)rock,
Who occupy the height of the hill.
Though you make your nest as (T)high as an eagle’s,
I will (U)bring you down from there,” declares the Lord.

17 “Edom will become an (V)object of horror; everyone who passes by it will be appalled and will [h](W)hiss at all its wounds. 18 Like the (X)overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah with its neighbors,” says the Lord, “(Y)no one will live there, nor will [i]anyone of mankind reside in it. 19 (Z)Behold, one will come up like a lion from the (AA)thicket of the Jordan to a perennially watered pasture; for in an instant I will chase him away from it, and I will appoint over it whoever is (AB)chosen. For who is (AC)like Me, and who will summon Me into court? And who then is the shepherd (AD)who can stand against Me?”

20 Therefore hear the (AE)plan of the Lord which He has planned against Edom, and His purposes which He has in mind against the inhabitants of Teman: they will certainly drag them off, even the little ones of the flock; He will certainly make their pasture (AF)desolate because of them. 21 The (AG)earth has quaked at the noise of their downfall. There is an outcry! The noise of it has been heard at the [j]Red Sea. 22 Behold, [k]He will mount up and (AH)swoop like an eagle, and spread out His wings [l]against Bozrah; and the (AI)hearts of the warriors of Edom on that day will be like the heart of a woman in labor.

A Message About Edom(A)(B)

Concerning Edom:(C)

This is what the Lord Almighty says:

“Is there no longer wisdom in Teman?(D)
    Has counsel perished from the prudent?
    Has their wisdom decayed?
Turn and flee, hide in deep caves,(E)
    you who live in Dedan,(F)
for I will bring disaster on Esau
    at the time when I punish him.
If grape pickers came to you,
    would they not leave a few grapes?
If thieves came during the night,
    would they not steal only as much as they wanted?
10 But I will strip Esau bare;
    I will uncover his hiding places,(G)
    so that he cannot conceal himself.
His armed men are destroyed,
    also his allies and neighbors,
    so there is no one(H) to say,
11 ‘Leave your fatherless children;(I) I will keep them alive.
    Your widows(J) too can depend on me.’”

12 This is what the Lord says: “If those who do not deserve to drink the cup(K) must drink it, why should you go unpunished?(L) You will not go unpunished, but must drink it. 13 I swear(M) by myself,” declares the Lord, “that Bozrah(N) will become a ruin and a curse,[a] an object of horror(O) and reproach;(P) and all its towns will be in ruins forever.”(Q)

14 I have heard a message from the Lord;
    an envoy was sent to the nations to say,
“Assemble yourselves to attack it!
    Rise up for battle!”

15 “Now I will make you small among the nations,
    despised by mankind.
16 The terror you inspire
    and the pride(R) of your heart have deceived you,
you who live in the clefts of the rocks,(S)
    who occupy the heights of the hill.
Though you build your nest(T) as high as the eagle’s,
    from there I will bring you down,”
declares the Lord.
17 “Edom will become an object of horror;(U)
    all who pass by will be appalled and will scoff
    because of all its wounds.(V)
18 As Sodom(W) and Gomorrah(X) were overthrown,
    along with their neighboring towns,”
says the Lord,
“so no one will live there;
    no people will dwell(Y) in it.

19 “Like a lion(Z) coming up from Jordan’s thickets(AA)
    to a rich pastureland,
I will chase Edom from its land in an instant.
    Who is the chosen one I will appoint for this?
Who is like(AB) me and who can challenge me?(AC)
    And what shepherd(AD) can stand against me?”

20 Therefore, hear what the Lord has planned against Edom,(AE)
    what he has purposed(AF) against those who live in Teman:(AG)
The young of the flock(AH) will be dragged away;
    their pasture will be appalled at their fate.(AI)
21 At the sound of their fall the earth will tremble;(AJ)
    their cry(AK) will resound to the Red Sea.[b]
22 Look! An eagle will soar and swoop(AL) down,
    spreading its wings over Bozrah.(AM)
In that day the hearts of Edom’s warriors(AN)
    will be like the heart of a woman in labor.(AO)

Edom

12 ‘The Lord God says this: “Because (A)Edom has acted against the house of Judah by taking vengeance, and has incurred great guilt, and avenged themselves upon them,” 13 therefore this is what the Lord God says: “I will also (B)reach out with My hand against Edom and (C)eliminate human and animal life from it. And I will turn it into ruins; from (D)Teman even to (E)Dedan they will fall by the sword. 14 And (F)I will inflict My vengeance on Edom by the hand of My people Israel. Therefore, they will act in Edom (G)in accordance with My anger and My wrath; so they will know My vengeance,” declares the Lord God.

12 “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: ‘Because Edom(A) took revenge on Judah and became very guilty by doing so, 13 therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will stretch out my hand(B) against Edom and kill both man and beast.(C) I will lay it waste, and from Teman(D) to Dedan(E) they will fall by the sword.(F) 14 I will take vengeance on Edom by the hand of my people Israel, and they will deal with Edom in accordance with my anger(G) and my wrath; they will know my vengeance, declares the Sovereign Lord.’”(H)
