BOOK FOUR(A)

Of God and Human Beings[a]

90 O Lord, you have always been our home.
Before you created the hills
    or brought the world into being,
    you were eternally God,
    and will be God forever.

You tell us to return to what we were;
    you change us back to dust.
(B)A thousand years to you are like one day;
    they are like yesterday, already gone,
    like a short hour in the night.
You carry us away like a flood;
    we last no longer than a dream.
We are like weeds that sprout in the morning,
    that grow and burst into bloom,
    then dry up and die in the evening.

We are destroyed by your anger;
    we are terrified by your fury.
You place our sins before you,
    our secret sins where you can see them.

Our life is cut short by your anger;
    it fades away like a whisper.
10 (C)Seventy years is all we have—
    eighty years, if we are strong;
yet all they bring us is trouble and sorrow;
    life is soon over, and we are gone.

11 Who has felt the full power of your anger?
    Who knows what fear your fury can bring?
12 Teach us how short our life is,
    so that we may become wise.

13 How much longer will your anger last?
    Have pity, O Lord, on your servants!
14 Fill us each morning with your constant love,
    so that we may sing and be glad all our life.
15 Give us now as much happiness as the sadness you gave us
    during all our years of misery.
16 Let us, your servants, see your mighty deeds;
    let our descendants see your glorious might.
17 Lord our God, may your blessings be with us.
    Give us success in all we do!

God Our Protector

91 Whoever goes to the Lord for safety,
    whoever remains under the protection of the Almighty,
can say to him,
    “You are my defender and protector.
    You are my God; in you I trust.”
He will keep you safe from all hidden dangers
    and from all deadly diseases.
He will cover you with his wings;
    you will be safe in his care;
    his faithfulness will protect and defend you.
You need not fear any dangers at night
    or sudden attacks during the day
    or the plagues that strike in the dark
    or the evils that kill in daylight.

A thousand may fall dead beside you,
    ten thousand all around you,
    but you will not be harmed.
You will look and see
    how the wicked are punished.

You have made the Lord your[b] defender,
    the Most High your protector,
10 and so no disaster will strike you,
    no violence will come near your home.
11 (D)God will put his angels in charge of you
    to protect you wherever you go.
12 (E)They will hold you up with their hands
    to keep you from hurting your feet on the stones.
13 (F)You will trample down lions and snakes,
    fierce lions and poisonous snakes.

14 God says, “I will save those who love me
    and will protect those who acknowledge me as Lord.
15 When they call to me, I will answer them;
    when they are in trouble, I will be with them.
    I will rescue them and honor them.
16 I will reward them with long life;
    I will save them.”

A Song of Praise[c]

92 How good it is to give thanks to you, O Lord,
    to sing in your honor, O Most High God,
to proclaim your constant love every morning
    and your faithfulness every night,
with the music of stringed instruments
    and with melody on the harp.
Your mighty deeds, O Lord, make me glad;
    because of what you have done, I sing for joy.

How great are your actions, Lord!
    How deep are your thoughts!
(G)This is something a fool cannot know;
    someone who is stupid cannot understand:
the wicked may grow like weeds,
    those who do wrong may prosper;
yet they will be totally destroyed,
    because you, Lord, are supreme forever.

We know that your enemies will die,
    and all the wicked will be defeated.
10 You have made me as strong as a wild ox;
    you have blessed me with happiness.
11 I have seen the defeat of my enemies
    and heard the cries of the wicked.

12 The righteous will flourish like palm trees;
    they will grow like the cedars of Lebanon.
13 They are like trees planted in the house of the Lord,
    that flourish in the Temple of our God,
14     that still bear fruit in old age
    and are always green and strong.
15 This shows that the Lord is just,
    that there is no wrong in my protector.

God the King

93 The Lord is king.
    He is clothed with majesty and strength.
The earth is set firmly in place
    and cannot be moved.
Your throne, O Lord, has been firm from the beginning,
    and you existed before time began.

The ocean depths raise their voice, O Lord;
    they raise their voice and roar.
The Lord rules supreme in heaven,
    greater than the roar of the ocean,
    more powerful than the waves of the sea.

Your laws are eternal, Lord,
    and your Temple is holy indeed,
    forever and ever.

God the Judge of All

94 Lord, you are a God who punishes;
    reveal your anger!
You are the judge of us all;
    rise and give the proud what they deserve!
How much longer will the wicked be glad?
    How much longer, Lord?
How much longer will criminals be proud
    and boast about their crimes?

They crush your people, Lord;
    they oppress those who belong to you.
They kill widows and orphans,
    and murder the strangers who live in our land.
They say, “The Lord does not see us;
    the God of Israel does not notice.”

My people, how can you be such stupid fools?
    When will you ever learn?
God made our ears—can't he hear?
    He made our eyes—can't he see?
10 He scolds the nations—won't he punish them?[d]
    He is the teacher of us all—hasn't he any knowledge?
11 (H)The Lord knows what we think;
    he knows how senseless our reasoning is.

12 Lord, how happy are those you instruct,
    the ones to whom you teach your law!
13 You give them rest from days of trouble
    until a pit is dug to trap the wicked.
14 The Lord will not abandon his people;
    he will not desert those who belong to him.
15 Justice will again be found in the courts,
    and all righteous people will support it.

16 Who stood up for me against the wicked?
    Who took my side against the evildoers?
17 If the Lord had not helped me,
    I would have gone quickly to the land of silence.[e]
18 I said, “I am falling”;
    but your constant love, O Lord, held me up.
19 Whenever I am anxious and worried,
    you comfort me and make me glad.

20 You have nothing to do with corrupt judges,
    who make injustice legal,
21     who plot against good people
    and sentence the innocent to death.
22 But the Lord defends me;
    my God protects me.
23 He will punish them for their wickedness
    and destroy them for their sins;
    the Lord our God will destroy them.

A Song of Praise

95 Come, let us praise the Lord!
    Let us sing for joy to God, who protects us!
Let us come before him with thanksgiving
    and sing joyful songs of praise.
For the Lord is a mighty God,
    a mighty king over all the gods.
He rules over the whole earth,
    from the deepest caves to the highest hills.
He rules over the sea, which he made;
    the land also, which he himself formed.

Come, let us bow down and worship him;
    let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker!
(I)He is our God;
    we are the people he cares for,
    the flock for which he provides.

Listen today to what he says:
(J)“Don't be stubborn, as your ancestors were at Meribah,
    as they were that day in the desert at Massah.
There they put me to the test and tried me,
    although they had seen what I did for them.
10 For forty years I was disgusted with those people.
    I said, ‘How disloyal they are!
    They refuse to obey my commands.’
11 (K)I was angry and made a solemn promise:
    ‘You will never enter the land
    where I would have given you rest.’”

God the Supreme King(L)

96 Sing a new song to the Lord!
    Sing to the Lord, all the world!
Sing to the Lord, and praise him!
    Proclaim every day the good news that he has saved us.
Proclaim his glory to the nations,
    his mighty deeds to all peoples.

The Lord is great and is to be highly praised;
    he is to be honored more than all the gods.
The gods of all other nations are only idols,
    but the Lord created the heavens.
Glory and majesty surround him;
    power and beauty fill his Temple.

(M)Praise the Lord, all people on earth;
    praise his glory and might.
Praise the Lord's glorious name;
    bring an offering and come into his Temple.
Bow down before the Holy One when he appears;[f]
    tremble before him, all the earth!

10 Say to all the nations, “The Lord is king!
    The earth is set firmly in place and cannot be moved;
    he will judge the peoples with justice.”
11 Be glad, earth and sky!
    Roar, sea, and every creature in you;
12     be glad, fields, and everything in you!
The trees in the woods will shout for joy
13     when the Lord comes to rule the earth.
He will rule the peoples of the world
    with justice and fairness.

God the Supreme Ruler

97 The Lord is king! Earth, be glad!
    Rejoice, you islands of the seas!
Clouds and darkness surround him;
    he rules with righteousness and justice.
Fire goes in front of him
    and burns up his enemies around him.
His lightning lights up the world;
    the earth sees it and trembles.
The hills melt like wax before the Lord,
    before the Lord of all the earth.
The heavens proclaim his righteousness,
    and all the nations see his glory.

Everyone who worships idols is put to shame;
    all the gods bow down[g] before the Lord.
The people of Zion are glad,
    and the cities of Judah rejoice
    because of your judgments, O Lord.
Lord Almighty, you are ruler of all the earth;
    you are much greater than all the gods.

10 The Lord loves those who hate evil;[h]
    he protects the lives of his people;
    he rescues them from the power of the wicked.
11 Light shines on the righteous,
    and gladness on the good.
12 All you that are righteous be glad
    because of what the Lord has done!
Remember what the holy God has done,
    and give thanks to him.

God the Ruler of the World[i]

98 Sing a new song to the Lord;
    he has done wonderful things!
By his own power and holy strength
    he has won the victory.
The Lord announced his victory;
    he made his saving power known to the nations.
He kept his promise to the people of Israel
    with loyalty and constant love for them.
All people everywhere have seen the victory of our God.

Sing for joy to the Lord, all the earth;
    praise him with songs and shouts of joy!
Sing praises to the Lord!
    Play music on the harps!
Blow trumpets and horns,
    and shout for joy to the Lord, our king.

Roar, sea, and every creature in you;
    sing, earth, and all who live on you!
Clap your hands, you rivers;
    you hills, sing together with joy before the Lord,
    because he comes to rule the earth.
He will rule the peoples of the world
    with justice and fairness.

God the Supreme King

99 (N)The Lord is king,
    and the people tremble.
He sits on his throne above the winged creatures,
    and the earth shakes.
The Lord is mighty in Zion;
    he is supreme over all the nations.
Everyone will praise his great and majestic name.
    Holy is he!

Mighty king,[j] you love what is right;
    you have established justice in Israel;
    you have brought righteousness and fairness.
Praise the Lord our God;
    worship before his throne!
    Holy is he!

Moses and Aaron were his priests,
    and Samuel was one who prayed to him;
    they called to the Lord, and he answered them.
(O)He spoke to them from the pillar of cloud;
    they obeyed the laws and commands that he gave them.

O Lord, our God, you answered your people;
    you showed them that you are a God who forgives,
    even though you punished them for their sins.
Praise the Lord our God,
    and worship at his sacred hill![k]
The Lord our God is holy.

A Hymn of Praise[l]

100 Sing to the Lord, all the world!
Worship the Lord with joy;
    come before him with happy songs!

Acknowledge that the Lord is God.
    He made us, and we belong to him;
    we are his people, we are his flock.

Enter the Temple gates with thanksgiving;
    go into its courts with praise.
    Give thanks to him and praise him.

(P)The Lord is good;
    his love is eternal
    and his faithfulness lasts forever.

A King's Promise[m]

101 My song is about loyalty and justice,
    and I sing it to you, O Lord.
My conduct will be faultless.
    When will you come to me?

I will live a pure life in my house
    and will never tolerate evil.
I hate the actions of those who turn away from God;
    I will have nothing to do with them.
I will not be dishonest[n]
    and will have no dealings with evil.[o]
I will get rid of anyone
    who whispers evil things about someone else;
I will not tolerate anyone
    who is proud and arrogant.

I will approve of those who are faithful to God
    and will let them live in my palace.
Those who are completely honest
    will be allowed to serve me.

No liar will live in my palace;
    no hypocrite will remain in my presence.
Day after day I will destroy
    the wicked in our land;
I will expel all who are evil
    from the city of the Lord.

The Prayer of a Troubled Youth[p]

102 Listen to my prayer, O Lord,
    and hear my cry for help!
When I am in trouble,
    don't turn away from me!
Listen to me,
    and answer me quickly when I call!

My life is disappearing like smoke;
    my body is burning like fire.
I am beaten down like dry grass;
    I have lost my desire for food.
I groan aloud;
    I am nothing but skin and bones.
I am like a wild bird in the desert,
    like an owl in abandoned ruins.
I lie awake;
    I am like a lonely bird on a housetop.
All day long my enemies insult me;
    those who mock me use my name in cursing.

9-10 Because of your anger and fury,
    ashes are my food,
    and my tears are mixed with my drink.
You picked me up and threw me away.
11 My life is like the evening shadows;
    I am like dry grass.

12 But you, O Lord, are king forever;
    all generations will remember you.
13 You will rise and take pity on Zion;
    the time has come to have mercy on her;
    this is the right time.
14 Your servants love her,
    even though she is destroyed;
they have pity on her,
    even though she is in ruins.

15 The nations will fear the Lord;
    all the kings of the earth will fear his power.
16 When the Lord rebuilds Zion,
    he will reveal his greatness.
17 He will hear his forsaken people
    and listen to their prayer.

18 Write down for the coming generation what the Lord has done,
    so that people not yet born will praise him.
19 The Lord looked down from his holy place on high,
    he looked down from heaven to earth.
20 He heard the groans of prisoners
    and set free those who were condemned to die.
21 And so his name will be proclaimed in Zion,
    and he will be praised in Jerusalem
22     when nations and kingdoms come together
    and worship the Lord.

23 The Lord has made me weak while I am still young;
    he has shortened my life.
24 O God, do not take me away now
    before I grow old.

O Lord, you live forever;
25 (Q)long ago you created the earth,
    and with your own hands you made the heavens.
26 They will disappear, but you will remain;
    they will all wear out like clothes.
You will discard them like clothes,
    and they will vanish.
27 But you are always the same,
    and your life never ends.
28 Our children will live in safety,
    and under your protection
    their descendants will be secure.

The Love of God[q]

103 Praise the Lord, my soul!
    All my being, praise his holy name!
Praise the Lord, my soul,
    and do not forget how kind he is.
He forgives all my sins
    and heals all my diseases.
He keeps me from the grave
    and blesses me with love and mercy.
He fills my life[r] with good things,
    so that I stay young and strong like an eagle.

The Lord judges in favor of the oppressed
    and gives them their rights.
He revealed his plans to Moses
    and let the people of Israel see his mighty deeds.
(R)The Lord is merciful and loving,
    slow to become angry and full of constant love.
He does not keep on rebuking;
    he is not angry forever.
10 He does not punish us as we deserve
    or repay us according to our sins and wrongs.
11 As high as the sky is above the earth,
    so great is his love for those who honor him.
12 As far as the east is from the west,
    so far does he remove our sins from us.
13 As a father is kind to his children,
    so the Lord is kind to those who honor him.
14 He knows what we are made of;
    he remembers that we are dust.

15 As for us, our life is like grass.
We grow and flourish like a wild flower;
16     then the wind blows on it, and it is gone—
    no one sees it again.
17 But for those who honor the Lord, his love lasts forever,
    and his goodness endures for all generations
18 of those who are true to his covenant
    and who faithfully obey his commands.

19 The Lord placed his throne in heaven;
    he is king over all.
20 Praise the Lord, you strong and mighty angels,
    who obey his commands,
    who listen to what he says.
21 Praise the Lord, all you heavenly powers,
    you servants of his, who do his will!
22 Praise the Lord, all his creatures
    in all the places he rules.
Praise the Lord, my soul!

In Praise of the Creator

104 Praise the Lord, my soul!
    O Lord, my God, how great you are!
You are clothed with majesty and glory;
    you cover yourself with light.
You have spread out the heavens like a tent
    and built your home on the waters above.[s]
You use the clouds as your chariot
    and ride on the wings of the wind.
(S)You use the winds as your messengers
    and flashes of lightning as your servants.

You have set the earth firmly on its foundations,
    and it will never be moved.
You placed the ocean over it like a robe,
    and the water covered the mountains.
When you rebuked the waters, they fled;
    they rushed away when they heard your shout of command.
They flowed over the mountains and into the valleys,
    to the place you had made for them.
You set a boundary they can never pass,
    to keep them from covering the earth again.

10 You make springs flow in the valleys,
    and rivers run between the hills.
11 They provide water for the wild animals;
    there the wild donkeys quench their thirst.
12 In the trees near by,
    the birds make their nests and sing.

13 From the sky you send rain on the hills,
    and the earth is filled with your blessings.
14 You make grass grow for the cattle
    and plants for us to use,
so that we can grow our crops
15     and produce wine to make us happy,
    olive oil to make us cheerful,
    and bread to give us strength.

16 The cedars of Lebanon get plenty of rain—
    the Lord's own trees, which he planted.
17 There the birds build their nests;
    the storks nest in the fir trees.
18 The wild goats live in the high mountains,
    and the rock badgers hide in the cliffs.

19 You created the moon to mark the months;
    the sun knows the time to set.
20 You made the night, and in the darkness
    all the wild animals come out.
21 The young lions roar while they hunt,
    looking for the food that God provides.
22 When the sun rises, they go back
    and lie down in their dens.
23 Then people go out to do their work
    and keep working until evening.

24 Lord, you have made so many things!
    How wisely you made them all!
    The earth is filled with your creatures.
25 There is the ocean, large and wide,
    where countless creatures live,
    large and small alike.
26 (T)The ships sail on it, and in it plays Leviathan,
    that sea monster which you made.[t]

27 All of them depend on you
    to give them food when they need it.
28 You give it to them, and they eat it;
    you provide food, and they are satisfied.
29 When you turn away, they are afraid;
    when you take away your breath, they die
    and go back to the dust from which they came.
30 But when you give them breath,[u] they are created;
    you give new life to the earth.

31 May the glory of the Lord last forever!
    May the Lord be happy with what he has made!
32 He looks at the earth, and it trembles;
    he touches the mountains, and they pour out smoke.

33 I will sing to the Lord all my life;
    as long as I live I will sing praises to my God.
34 May he be pleased with my song,
    for my gladness comes from him.
35 May sinners be destroyed from the earth;
    may the wicked be no more.

Praise the Lord, my soul!
Praise the Lord!

God and His People(U)

105 Give thanks to the Lord,
proclaim his greatness;
    tell the nations what he has done.
Sing praise to the Lord;
    tell the wonderful things he has done.
Be glad that we belong to him;
    let all who worship him rejoice.
Go to the Lord for help;
    and worship him continually.
5-6 You descendants of Abraham, his servant;
    you descendants of Jacob, the man he chose:
remember the miracles that God performed
    and the judgments that he gave.

The Lord is our God;
    his commands are for all the world.
He will keep his covenant forever,
    his promises for a thousand generations.
(V)He will keep the agreement he made with Abraham
    and his promise to Isaac.
10 (W)The Lord made a covenant with Jacob,
    one that will last forever.
11 “I will give you the land of Canaan,” he said.
    “It will be your own possession.”

12 God's people were few in number,
    strangers in the land of Canaan.
13 They wandered from country to country,
    from one kingdom to another.
14 (X)But God let no one oppress them;
    to protect them, he warned the kings:
15 “Don't harm my chosen servants;
    do not touch my prophets.”

16 (Y)The Lord sent famine to their country
    and took away all their food.
17 (Z)But he sent a man ahead of them,
    Joseph, who had been sold as a slave.
18 (AA)His feet were kept in chains,
    and an iron collar was around his neck,
19     until what he had predicted came true.
The word of the Lord proved him right.
20 (AB)Then the king of Egypt had him released;
    the ruler of nations set him free.
21 (AC)He put him in charge of his government
    and made him ruler over all the land,
22     with power over the king's officials
    and authority to instruct his advisers.

23 (AD)Then Jacob went to Egypt
    and settled in that country.
24 (AE)The Lord gave many children to his people
    and made them stronger than their enemies.
25 He made the Egyptians hate his people
    and treat his servants with deceit.

26 (AF)Then he sent his servant Moses,
    and Aaron, whom he had chosen.
27 They did God's mighty acts
    and performed miracles in Egypt.
28 (AG)God sent darkness on the country,
    but the Egyptians did not obey[v] his command.
29 (AH)He turned their rivers into blood
    and killed all their fish.
30 (AI)Their country was overrun with frogs;
    even the palace was filled with them.
31 (AJ)God commanded, and flies and gnats
    swarmed throughout the whole country.
32 (AK)He sent hail and lightning on their land
    instead of rain;
33 he destroyed their grapevines and fig trees
    and broke down all the trees.
34 (AL)He commanded, and the locusts came,
    countless millions of them;
35 they ate all the plants in the land;
    they ate all the crops.
36 (AM)He killed the first-born sons
    of all the families of Egypt.

37 (AN)Then he led the Israelites out;
    they carried silver and gold,
    and all of them were healthy and strong.
38 The Egyptians were afraid of them
    and were glad when they left.
39 (AO)God put a cloud over his people
    and a fire at night to give them light.
40 (AP)They[w] asked, and he sent quails;
    he gave them food from heaven to satisfy them.
41 (AQ)He opened a rock, and water gushed out,
    flowing through the desert like a river.
42 He remembered his sacred promise
    to Abraham his servant.

43 So he led his chosen people out,
    and they sang and shouted for joy.
44 (AR)He gave them the lands of other peoples
    and let them take over their fields,
45 so that his people would obey his laws
    and keep all his commands.

Praise the Lord!

The Lord's Goodness to His People

106 (AS)Praise the Lord!
Give thanks to the Lord, because he is good;
    his love is eternal.
Who can tell all the great things he has done?
    Who can praise him enough?
Happy are those who obey his commands,
    who always do what is right.

Remember me, Lord, when you help your people;
    include me when you save them.
Let me see the prosperity of your people
    and share in the happiness of your nation,
    in the glad pride of those who belong to you.

We have sinned as our ancestors did;
    we have been wicked and evil.
(AT)Our ancestors in Egypt did not understand God's wonderful acts;
    they forgot the many times he showed them his love,
    and they rebelled against the Almighty[x] at the Red Sea.
But he saved them, as he had promised,
    in order to show his great power.
(AU)He gave a command to the Red Sea,
    and it dried up;
    he led his people across on dry land.
10 He saved them from those who hated them;
    he rescued them from their enemies.
11 But the water drowned their enemies;
    not one of them was left.
12 (AV)Then his people believed his promises
    and sang praises to him.

13 But they quickly forgot what he had done
    and acted without waiting for his advice.
14 (AW)They were filled with craving in the desert
    and put God to the test;
15 so he gave them what they asked for,
    but also sent a terrible disease among them.

16 (AX)There in the desert they were jealous of Moses
    and of Aaron, the Lord's holy servant.
17 Then the earth opened up and swallowed Dathan
    and buried Abiram and his family;
18 fire came down on their followers
    and burned up those wicked people.

19 (AY)They made a gold bull-calf at Sinai
    and worshiped that idol;
20 they exchanged the glory of God
    for the image of an animal that eats grass.
21 They forgot the God who had saved them
    by his mighty acts in Egypt.
22 What wonderful things he did there!
    What amazing things at the Red Sea!
23 When God said that he would destroy his people,
    his chosen servant, Moses, stood up against God
    and kept his anger from destroying them.

24 (AZ)Then they rejected the pleasant land,
    because they did not believe God's promise.
25 They stayed in their tents and grumbled
    and would not listen to the Lord.
26 So he have them a solemn warning
    that he would make them die in the desert
27 (BA)and scatter their descendants among the heathen,
    letting them die in foreign countries.

28 (BB)Then at Peor, God's people joined in the worship of Baal
    and ate sacrifices offered to dead gods.
29 They stirred up the Lord's anger by their actions,
    and a terrible disease broke out among them.
30 But Phinehas stood up and punished the guilty,
    and the plague was stopped.
31 This has been remembered in his favor ever since
    and will be for all time to come.

32 (BC)At the springs of Meribah the people made the Lord angry,
    and Moses was in trouble on their account.
33 They made him so bitter
    that he spoke without stopping to think.

34 (BD)They did not kill the heathen,
    as the Lord had commanded them to do,
35 but they intermarried with them
    and adopted their pagan ways.
36 God's people worshiped idols,
    and this caused their destruction.
37 (BE)They offered their own sons and daughters
    as sacrifices to the idols of Canaan.
38 (BF)They killed those innocent children,
    and the land was defiled by those murders.
39 They made themselves impure by their actions
    and were unfaithful to God.

40 (BG)So the Lord was angry with his people;
    he was disgusted with them.
41 He abandoned them to the power of the heathen,
    and their enemies ruled over them.
42 They were oppressed by their enemies
    and were in complete subjection to them.
43 Many times the Lord rescued his people,
    but they chose to rebel against him
    and sank deeper into sin.
44 Yet the Lord heard them when they cried out,
    and he took notice of their distress.
45 For their sake he remembered his covenant,
    and because of his great love he relented.
46 He made all their oppressors
    feel sorry for them.

47 (BH)Save us, O Lord our God,
    and bring us back from among the nations,
so that we may be thankful
    and praise your holy name.

48 Praise the Lord, the God of Israel;
    praise him now and forever!
    Let everyone say, “Amen!”

Praise the Lord!

BOOK IV

Psalms 90–106

Psalm 90

A prayer of Moses the man of God.

Lord, you have been our dwelling place(A)
    throughout all generations.
Before the mountains were born(B)
    or you brought forth the whole world,
    from everlasting to everlasting(C) you are God.(D)

You turn people back to dust,
    saying, “Return to dust, you mortals.”(E)
A thousand years in your sight
    are like a day that has just gone by,
    or like a watch in the night.(F)
Yet you sweep people away(G) in the sleep of death—
    they are like the new grass of the morning:
In the morning it springs up new,
    but by evening it is dry and withered.(H)

We are consumed by your anger
    and terrified by your indignation.
You have set our iniquities before you,
    our secret sins(I) in the light of your presence.(J)
All our days pass away under your wrath;
    we finish our years with a moan.(K)
10 Our days may come to seventy years,(L)
    or eighty,(M) if our strength endures;
yet the best of them are but trouble and sorrow,(N)
    for they quickly pass, and we fly away.(O)
11 If only we knew the power of your anger!
    Your wrath(P) is as great as the fear that is your due.(Q)
12 Teach us to number our days,(R)
    that we may gain a heart of wisdom.(S)

13 Relent, Lord! How long(T) will it be?
    Have compassion on your servants.(U)
14 Satisfy(V) us in the morning with your unfailing love,(W)
    that we may sing for joy(X) and be glad all our days.(Y)
15 Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us,
    for as many years as we have seen trouble.
16 May your deeds be shown to your servants,
    your splendor to their children.(Z)

17 May the favor[a] of the Lord our God rest on us;
    establish the work of our hands for us—
    yes, establish the work of our hands.(AA)

Psalm 91

Whoever dwells in the shelter(AB) of the Most High
    will rest in the shadow(AC) of the Almighty.[b]
I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge(AD) and my fortress,(AE)
    my God, in whom I trust.”

Surely he will save you
    from the fowler’s snare(AF)
    and from the deadly pestilence.(AG)
He will cover you with his feathers,
    and under his wings you will find refuge;(AH)
    his faithfulness will be your shield(AI) and rampart.
You will not fear(AJ) the terror of night,
    nor the arrow that flies by day,
nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,
    nor the plague that destroys at midday.
A thousand may fall at your side,
    ten thousand at your right hand,
    but it will not come near you.
You will only observe with your eyes
    and see the punishment of the wicked.(AK)

If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,”
    and you make the Most High your dwelling,
10 no harm(AL) will overtake you,
    no disaster will come near your tent.
11 For he will command his angels(AM) concerning you
    to guard you in all your ways;(AN)
12 they will lift you up in their hands,
    so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.(AO)
13 You will tread on the lion and the cobra;
    you will trample the great lion and the serpent.(AP)

14 “Because he[c] loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him;
    I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
15 He will call on me, and I will answer him;
    I will be with him in trouble,
    I will deliver him and honor him.(AQ)
16 With long life(AR) I will satisfy him
    and show him my salvation.(AS)

Psalm 92[d]

A psalm. A song. For the Sabbath day.

It is good to praise the Lord
    and make music(AT) to your name,(AU) O Most High,(AV)
proclaiming your love in the morning(AW)
    and your faithfulness at night,
to the music of the ten-stringed lyre(AX)
    and the melody of the harp.(AY)

For you make me glad by your deeds, Lord;
    I sing for joy(AZ) at what your hands have done.(BA)
How great are your works,(BB) Lord,
    how profound your thoughts!(BC)
Senseless people(BD) do not know,
    fools do not understand,
that though the wicked spring up like grass
    and all evildoers flourish,
    they will be destroyed forever.(BE)

But you, Lord, are forever exalted.

For surely your enemies(BF), Lord,
    surely your enemies will perish;
    all evildoers will be scattered.(BG)
10 You have exalted my horn[e](BH) like that of a wild ox;(BI)
    fine oils(BJ) have been poured on me.
11 My eyes have seen the defeat of my adversaries;
    my ears have heard the rout of my wicked foes.(BK)

12 The righteous will flourish(BL) like a palm tree,
    they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon;(BM)
13 planted in the house of the Lord,
    they will flourish in the courts of our God.(BN)
14 They will still bear fruit(BO) in old age,
    they will stay fresh and green,
15 proclaiming, “The Lord is upright;
    he is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in him.(BP)

Psalm 93

The Lord reigns,(BQ) he is robed in majesty;(BR)
    the Lord is robed in majesty and armed with strength;(BS)
    indeed, the world is established,(BT) firm and secure.(BU)
Your throne was established(BV) long ago;
    you are from all eternity.(BW)

The seas(BX) have lifted up, Lord,
    the seas have lifted up their voice;(BY)
    the seas have lifted up their pounding waves.(BZ)
Mightier than the thunder(CA) of the great waters,
    mightier than the breakers(CB) of the sea—
    the Lord on high is mighty.(CC)

Your statutes, Lord, stand firm;
    holiness(CD) adorns your house(CE)
    for endless days.

Psalm 94

The Lord is a God who avenges.(CF)
    O God who avenges, shine forth.(CG)
Rise up,(CH) Judge(CI) of the earth;
    pay back(CJ) to the proud what they deserve.
How long, Lord, will the wicked,
    how long will the wicked be jubilant?(CK)

They pour out arrogant(CL) words;
    all the evildoers are full of boasting.(CM)
They crush your people,(CN) Lord;
    they oppress your inheritance.(CO)
They slay the widow(CP) and the foreigner;
    they murder the fatherless.(CQ)
They say, “The Lord does not see;(CR)
    the God of Jacob(CS) takes no notice.”

Take notice, you senseless ones(CT) among the people;
    you fools, when will you become wise?
Does he who fashioned the ear not hear?
    Does he who formed the eye not see?(CU)
10 Does he who disciplines(CV) nations not punish?
    Does he who teaches(CW) mankind lack knowledge?
11 The Lord knows all human plans;(CX)
    he knows that they are futile.(CY)

12 Blessed is the one you discipline,(CZ) Lord,
    the one you teach(DA) from your law;
13 you grant them relief from days of trouble,(DB)
    till a pit(DC) is dug for the wicked.
14 For the Lord will not reject his people;(DD)
    he will never forsake his inheritance.
15 Judgment will again be founded on righteousness,(DE)
    and all the upright in heart(DF) will follow it.

16 Who will rise up(DG) for me against the wicked?
    Who will take a stand for me against evildoers?(DH)
17 Unless the Lord had given me help,(DI)
    I would soon have dwelt in the silence of death.(DJ)
18 When I said, “My foot is slipping,(DK)
    your unfailing love, Lord, supported me.
19 When anxiety(DL) was great within me,
    your consolation(DM) brought me joy.

20 Can a corrupt throne(DN) be allied with you—
    a throne that brings on misery by its decrees?(DO)
21 The wicked band together(DP) against the righteous
    and condemn the innocent(DQ) to death.(DR)
22 But the Lord has become my fortress,
    and my God the rock(DS) in whom I take refuge.(DT)
23 He will repay(DU) them for their sins
    and destroy(DV) them for their wickedness;
    the Lord our God will destroy them.

Psalm 95

Come,(DW) let us sing for joy(DX) to the Lord;
    let us shout aloud(DY) to the Rock(DZ) of our salvation.
Let us come before him(EA) with thanksgiving(EB)
    and extol him with music(EC) and song.

For the Lord is the great God,(ED)
    the great King(EE) above all gods.(EF)
In his hand are the depths of the earth,(EG)
    and the mountain peaks belong to him.
The sea is his, for he made it,
    and his hands formed the dry land.(EH)

Come, let us bow down(EI) in worship,(EJ)
    let us kneel(EK) before the Lord our Maker;(EL)
for he is our God
    and we are the people of his pasture,(EM)
    the flock under his care.

Today, if only you would hear his voice,
“Do not harden your hearts(EN) as you did at Meribah,[f](EO)
    as you did that day at Massah[g] in the wilderness,(EP)
where your ancestors tested(EQ) me;
    they tried me, though they had seen what I did.
10 For forty years(ER) I was angry with that generation;
    I said, ‘They are a people whose hearts go astray,(ES)
    and they have not known my ways.’(ET)
11 So I declared on oath(EU) in my anger,
    ‘They shall never enter my rest.’”(EV)

Psalm 96(EW)

Sing to the Lord(EX) a new song;(EY)
    sing to the Lord, all the earth.
Sing to the Lord, praise his name;(EZ)
    proclaim his salvation(FA) day after day.
Declare his glory(FB) among the nations,
    his marvelous deeds(FC) among all peoples.

For great is the Lord and most worthy of praise;(FD)
    he is to be feared(FE) above all gods.(FF)
For all the gods of the nations are idols,(FG)
    but the Lord made the heavens.(FH)
Splendor and majesty(FI) are before him;
    strength and glory(FJ) are in his sanctuary.

Ascribe to the Lord,(FK) all you families of nations,(FL)
    ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
    bring an offering(FM) and come into his courts.(FN)
Worship the Lord(FO) in the splendor of his[h] holiness;(FP)
    tremble(FQ) before him, all the earth.(FR)
10 Say among the nations, “The Lord reigns.(FS)
    The world is firmly established,(FT) it cannot be moved;(FU)
    he will judge(FV) the peoples with equity.(FW)

11 Let the heavens rejoice,(FX) let the earth be glad;(FY)
    let the sea resound, and all that is in it.
12 Let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them;
    let all the trees of the forest(FZ) sing for joy.(GA)
13 Let all creation rejoice before the Lord, for he comes,
    he comes to judge(GB) the earth.
He will judge the world in righteousness(GC)
    and the peoples in his faithfulness.(GD)

Psalm 97

The Lord reigns,(GE) let the earth be glad;(GF)
    let the distant shores(GG) rejoice.
Clouds(GH) and thick darkness(GI) surround him;
    righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.(GJ)
Fire(GK) goes before(GL) him
    and consumes(GM) his foes on every side.
His lightning(GN) lights up the world;
    the earth(GO) sees and trembles.(GP)
The mountains melt(GQ) like wax(GR) before the Lord,
    before the Lord of all the earth.(GS)
The heavens proclaim his righteousness,(GT)
    and all peoples see his glory.(GU)

All who worship images(GV) are put to shame,(GW)
    those who boast in idols(GX)
    worship him,(GY) all you gods!(GZ)

Zion hears and rejoices
    and the villages of Judah are glad(HA)
    because of your judgments,(HB) Lord.
For you, Lord, are the Most High(HC) over all the earth;(HD)
    you are exalted(HE) far above all gods.
10 Let those who love the Lord hate evil,(HF)
    for he guards(HG) the lives of his faithful ones(HH)
    and delivers(HI) them from the hand of the wicked.(HJ)
11 Light shines[i](HK) on the righteous(HL)
    and joy on the upright in heart.(HM)
12 Rejoice in the Lord,(HN) you who are righteous,
    and praise his holy name.(HO)

Psalm 98

A psalm.

Sing to the Lord(HP) a new song,(HQ)
    for he has done marvelous things;(HR)

    have worked salvation(HU) for him.
The Lord has made his salvation known(HV)
    and revealed his righteousness(HW) to the nations.(HX)
He has remembered(HY) his love
    and his faithfulness to Israel;
all the ends of the earth(HZ) have seen
    the salvation of our God.(IA)

Shout for joy(IB) to the Lord, all the earth,
    burst into jubilant song with music;
make music to the Lord with the harp,(IC)
    with the harp and the sound of singing,(ID)
with trumpets(IE) and the blast of the ram’s horn(IF)
    shout for joy(IG) before the Lord, the King.(IH)

Let the sea(II) resound, and everything in it,
    the world, and all who live in it.(IJ)
Let the rivers clap their hands,(IK)
    let the mountains(IL) sing together for joy;
let them sing before the Lord,
    for he comes to judge the earth.
He will judge the world in righteousness
    and the peoples with equity.(IM)

Psalm 99

The Lord reigns,(IN)
    let the nations tremble;(IO)
he sits enthroned(IP) between the cherubim,(IQ)
    let the earth shake.
Great is the Lord(IR) in Zion;(IS)
    he is exalted(IT) over all the nations.
Let them praise(IU) your great and awesome name(IV)
    he is holy.(IW)

The King(IX) is mighty, he loves justice(IY)
    you have established equity;(IZ)
in Jacob you have done
    what is just and right.(JA)
Exalt(JB) the Lord our God
    and worship at his footstool;
    he is holy.

Moses(JC) and Aaron(JD) were among his priests,
    Samuel(JE) was among those who called on his name;
they called on the Lord
    and he answered(JF) them.
He spoke to them from the pillar of cloud;(JG)
    they kept his statutes and the decrees he gave them.

Lord our God,
    you answered them;
you were to Israel a forgiving God,(JH)

Exalt the Lord our God
    and worship at his holy mountain,
    for the Lord our God is holy.

Know that the Lord is God.(JM)
    It is he who made us,(JN) and we are his[k];
    we are his people,(JO) the sheep of his pasture.(JP)

Enter his gates with thanksgiving(JQ)
    and his courts(JR) with praise;
    give thanks to him and praise his name.(JS)
For the Lord is good(JT) and his love endures forever;(JU)
    his faithfulness(JV) continues through all generations.

Psalm 101

Of David. A psalm.

I will sing of your love(JW) and justice;
    to you, Lord, I will sing praise.
I will be careful to lead a blameless life(JX)
    when will you come to me?

I will conduct the affairs(JY) of my house
    with a blameless heart.
I will not look with approval
    on anything that is vile.(JZ)

I hate what faithless people do;(KA)
    I will have no part in it.
The perverse of heart(KB) shall be far from me;
    I will have nothing to do with what is evil.

Whoever slanders their neighbor(KC) in secret,
    I will put to silence;
whoever has haughty eyes(KD) and a proud heart,
    I will not tolerate.

My eyes will be on the faithful in the land,
    that they may dwell with me;
the one whose walk is blameless(KE)
    will minister to me.

No one who practices deceit
    will dwell in my house;
no one who speaks falsely
    will stand in my presence.

Every morning(KF) I will put to silence
    all the wicked(KG) in the land;
I will cut off every evildoer(KH)
    from the city of the Lord.(KI)

Psalm 102[l]

A prayer of an afflicted person who has grown weak and pours out a lament before the Lord.

Hear my prayer,(KJ) Lord;
    let my cry for help(KK) come to you.
Do not hide your face(KL) from me
    when I am in distress.
Turn your ear(KM) to me;
    when I call, answer me quickly.

For my days vanish like smoke;(KN)
    my bones(KO) burn like glowing embers.
My heart is blighted and withered like grass;(KP)
    I forget to eat my food.(KQ)
In my distress I groan aloud(KR)
    and am reduced to skin and bones.
I am like a desert owl,(KS)
    like an owl among the ruins.
I lie awake;(KT) I have become
    like a bird alone(KU) on a roof.
All day long my enemies(KV) taunt me;(KW)
    those who rail against me use my name as a curse.(KX)
For I eat ashes(KY) as my food
    and mingle my drink with tears(KZ)
10 because of your great wrath,(LA)
    for you have taken me up and thrown me aside.
11 My days are like the evening shadow;(LB)
    I wither(LC) away like grass.

12 But you, Lord, sit enthroned forever;(LD)
    your renown endures(LE) through all generations.(LF)
13 You will arise(LG) and have compassion(LH) on Zion,
    for it is time(LI) to show favor(LJ) to her;
    the appointed time(LK) has come.
14 For her stones are dear to your servants;
    her very dust moves them to pity.
15 The nations will fear(LL) the name of the Lord,
    all the kings(LM) of the earth will revere your glory.
16 For the Lord will rebuild Zion(LN)
    and appear in his glory.(LO)
17 He will respond to the prayer(LP) of the destitute;
    he will not despise their plea.

18 Let this be written(LQ) for a future generation,
    that a people not yet created(LR) may praise the Lord:
19 “The Lord looked down(LS) from his sanctuary on high,
    from heaven he viewed the earth,
20 to hear the groans of the prisoners(LT)
    and release those condemned to death.”
21 So the name of the Lord will be declared(LU) in Zion
    and his praise(LV) in Jerusalem
22 when the peoples and the kingdoms
    assemble to worship(LW) the Lord.

23 In the course of my life[m] he broke my strength;
    he cut short my days.(LX)
24 So I said:
“Do not take me away, my God, in the midst of my days;
    your years go on(LY) through all generations.
25 In the beginning(LZ) you laid the foundations of the earth,
    and the heavens(MA) are the work of your hands.(MB)
26 They will perish,(MC) but you remain;
    they will all wear out like a garment.
Like clothing you will change them
    and they will be discarded.
27 But you remain the same,(MD)
    and your years will never end.(ME)
28 The children of your servants(MF) will live in your presence;
    their descendants(MG) will be established before you.”

Psalm 103

Of David.

Praise the Lord,(MH) my soul;(MI)
    all my inmost being, praise his holy name.(MJ)
Praise the Lord,(MK) my soul,
    and forget not(ML) all his benefits—
who forgives all your sins(MM)
    and heals(MN) all your diseases,
who redeems your life(MO) from the pit
    and crowns you with love and compassion,(MP)
who satisfies(MQ) your desires with good things
    so that your youth is renewed(MR) like the eagle’s.(MS)

The Lord works righteousness(MT)
    and justice for all the oppressed.(MU)

He made known(MV) his ways(MW) to Moses,
    his deeds(MX) to the people of Israel:
The Lord is compassionate and gracious,(MY)
    slow to anger, abounding in love.
He will not always accuse,
    nor will he harbor his anger forever;(MZ)
10 he does not treat us as our sins deserve(NA)
    or repay us according to our iniquities.
11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
    so great is his love(NB) for those who fear him;(NC)
12 as far as the east is from the west,
    so far has he removed our transgressions(ND) from us.

13 As a father has compassion(NE) on his children,
    so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him;
14 for he knows how we are formed,(NF)
    he remembers that we are dust.(NG)
15 The life of mortals is like grass,(NH)
    they flourish like a flower(NI) of the field;
16 the wind blows(NJ) over it and it is gone,
    and its place(NK) remembers it no more.
17 But from everlasting to everlasting
    the Lord’s love is with those who fear him,
    and his righteousness with their children’s children(NL)
18 with those who keep his covenant(NM)
    and remember(NN) to obey his precepts.(NO)

19 The Lord has established his throne(NP) in heaven,
    and his kingdom rules(NQ) over all.

20 Praise the Lord,(NR) you his angels,(NS)
    you mighty ones(NT) who do his bidding,(NU)
    who obey his word.
21 Praise the Lord, all his heavenly hosts,(NV)
    you his servants(NW) who do his will.
22 Praise the Lord, all his works(NX)
    everywhere in his dominion.

Praise the Lord, my soul.(NY)

Psalm 104

Praise the Lord, my soul.(NZ)

Lord my God, you are very great;
    you are clothed with splendor and majesty.(OA)

The Lord wraps(OB) himself in light(OC) as with a garment;
    he stretches(OD) out the heavens(OE) like a tent(OF)
    and lays the beams(OG) of his upper chambers on their waters.(OH)
He makes the clouds(OI) his chariot(OJ)
    and rides on the wings of the wind.(OK)
He makes winds his messengers,[n](OL)
    flames of fire(OM) his servants.

He set the earth(ON) on its foundations;(OO)
    it can never be moved.
You covered it(OP) with the watery depths(OQ) as with a garment;
    the waters stood(OR) above the mountains.
But at your rebuke(OS) the waters fled,
    at the sound of your thunder(OT) they took to flight;
they flowed over the mountains,
    they went down into the valleys,
    to the place you assigned(OU) for them.
You set a boundary(OV) they cannot cross;
    never again will they cover the earth.

10 He makes springs(OW) pour water into the ravines;
    it flows between the mountains.
11 They give water(OX) to all the beasts of the field;
    the wild donkeys(OY) quench their thirst.
12 The birds of the sky(OZ) nest by the waters;
    they sing among the branches.(PA)
13 He waters the mountains(PB) from his upper chambers;(PC)
    the land is satisfied by the fruit of his work.(PD)
14 He makes grass grow(PE) for the cattle,
    and plants for people to cultivate—
    bringing forth food(PF) from the earth:
15 wine(PG) that gladdens human hearts,
    oil(PH) to make their faces shine,
    and bread that sustains(PI) their hearts.
16 The trees of the Lord(PJ) are well watered,
    the cedars of Lebanon(PK) that he planted.
17 There the birds(PL) make their nests;
    the stork has its home in the junipers.
18 The high mountains belong to the wild goats;(PM)
    the crags are a refuge for the hyrax.(PN)

19 He made the moon to mark the seasons,(PO)
    and the sun(PP) knows when to go down.
20 You bring darkness,(PQ) it becomes night,(PR)
    and all the beasts of the forest(PS) prowl.
21 The lions roar for their prey(PT)
    and seek their food from God.(PU)
22 The sun rises, and they steal away;
    they return and lie down in their dens.(PV)
23 Then people go out to their work,(PW)
    to their labor until evening.(PX)

24 How many are your works,(PY) Lord!
    In wisdom you made(PZ) them all;
    the earth is full of your creatures.(QA)
25 There is the sea,(QB) vast and spacious,
    teeming with creatures beyond number—
    living things both large and small.(QC)
26 There the ships(QD) go to and fro,
    and Leviathan,(QE) which you formed to frolic(QF) there.(QG)

27 All creatures look to you
    to give them their food(QH) at the proper time.
28 When you give it to them,
    they gather it up;
when you open your hand,
    they are satisfied(QI) with good things.
29 When you hide your face,(QJ)
    they are terrified;
when you take away their breath,
    they die and return to the dust.(QK)
30 When you send your Spirit,(QL)
    they are created,
    and you renew the face of the ground.

31 May the glory of the Lord(QM) endure forever;
    may the Lord rejoice in his works(QN)
32 he who looks at the earth, and it trembles,(QO)
    who touches the mountains,(QP) and they smoke.(QQ)

33 I will sing(QR) to the Lord all my life;
    I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.
34 May my meditation be pleasing to him,
    as I rejoice(QS) in the Lord.
35 But may sinners vanish(QT) from the earth
    and the wicked be no more.(QU)

Praise the Lord, my soul.

Praise the Lord.[o](QV)

Psalm 105(QW)

Give praise to the Lord,(QX) proclaim his name;(QY)
    make known among the nations what he has done.
Sing to him,(QZ) sing praise to him;(RA)
    tell of all his wonderful acts.(RB)
Glory in his holy name;(RC)
    let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice.
Look to the Lord and his strength;
    seek his face(RD) always.

Remember the wonders(RE) he has done,
    his miracles, and the judgments he pronounced,(RF)
you his servants, the descendants of Abraham,(RG)
    his chosen(RH) ones, the children of Jacob.
He is the Lord our God;
    his judgments are in all the earth.

He remembers his covenant(RI) forever,
    the promise he made, for a thousand generations,
the covenant he made with Abraham,(RJ)
    the oath he swore to Isaac.
10 He confirmed it(RK) to Jacob as a decree,
    to Israel as an everlasting covenant:(RL)
11 “To you I will give the land of Canaan(RM)
    as the portion you will inherit.”(RN)

12 When they were but few in number,(RO)
    few indeed, and strangers in it,(RP)
13 they wandered from nation to nation,(RQ)
    from one kingdom to another.
14 He allowed no one to oppress(RR) them;
    for their sake he rebuked kings:(RS)
15 “Do not touch(RT) my anointed ones;
    do my prophets(RU) no harm.”

16 He called down famine(RV) on the land
    and destroyed all their supplies of food;
17 and he sent a man before them—
    Joseph, sold as a slave.(RW)
18 They bruised his feet with shackles,(RX)
    his neck was put in irons,
19 till what he foretold(RY) came to pass,
    till the word(RZ) of the Lord proved him true.
20 The king sent and released him,
    the ruler of peoples set him free.(SA)
21 He made him master of his household,
    ruler over all he possessed,
22 to instruct his princes(SB) as he pleased
    and teach his elders wisdom.(SC)
