⁴⁰ For as Jonah was in the belly of the huge fish^[a](A) three days and three nights,^(B) so the Son of Man will be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights.

²² So when he was raised from the dead,^(A) his disciples remembered that he had said this,^(B) and they believed the Scripture^(C) and the statement Jesus had made.

²⁵ For David says of him:

²⁹ “Brothers and sisters, I can confidently speak to you about the patriarch David: He is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.^{(C) 30} Since he was a prophet, he knew that God had sworn an oath to him to seat one of his descendants^[b] on his throne.^{(D) 31} Seeing what was to come, he spoke concerning the resurrection of the Messiah: He^[c] was not abandoned in Hades, and his flesh did not experience decay.^[d](E)

³² “God has raised^(F) this Jesus; we are all witnesses of this.

³³ God has fulfilled this for us, their children, by raising up Jesus, as it is written in the second Psalm:

³⁴ As to his raising him from the dead, never to return to decay, he has spoken in this way, I will give you the holy and sure promises of David.^{[c](B) 35} Therefore he also says in another passage, You will not let your Holy One see decay.^[d](C)

²² To this very day, I have had help from God, and I stand and testify to both small and great, saying nothing other than what the prophets and Moses said would take place^(A)— ²³ that the Messiah would suffer, and that, as the first to rise from the dead, he would proclaim light to our people and to the Gentiles.”^(B)
