Psalm 119:33-56

³³Teach me,^(A) Lord, the way of your decrees,
    that I may follow it to the end.^[a]
³⁴Give me understanding,^(B) so that I may keep your law^(C)
    and obey it with all my heart.^(D)
³⁵Direct me^(E) in the path of your commands,^(F)
    for there I find delight.^(G)
³⁶Turn my heart^(H) toward your statutes
    and not toward selfish gain.^(I)
³⁷Turn my eyes away from worthless things;
    preserve my life^(J) according to your word.^[b]^(K)
³⁸Fulfill your promise^(L) to your servant,
    so that you may be feared.
³⁹Take away the disgrace^(M) I dread,
    for your laws are good.
⁴⁰How I long^(N) for your precepts!
    In your righteousness preserve my life.^(O)

⁴¹May your unfailing love^(P) come to me, Lord,
    your salvation, according to your promise;^(Q)
⁴²then I can answer^(R) anyone who taunts me,^(S)
    for I trust in your word.
⁴³Never take your word of truth from my mouth,^(T)
    for I have put my hope^(U) in your laws.
⁴⁴I will always obey your law,^(V)
    for ever and ever.
⁴⁵I will walk about in freedom,
    for I have sought out your precepts.^(W)

    for you have given me hope.^(AD)
⁵⁰My comfort in my suffering is this:
    Your promise preserves my life.^(AE)
⁵¹The arrogant mock me^(AF) unmercifully,
    but I do not turn^(AG) from your law.
⁵²I remember,^(AH) Lord, your ancient laws,
    and I find comfort in them.
⁵³Indignation grips me^(AI) because of the wicked,
    who have forsaken your law.^(AJ)
⁵⁴Your decrees are the theme of my song^(AK)
    wherever I lodge.
⁵⁵In the night, Lord, I remember^(AL) your name,
    that I may keep your law.^(AM)
⁵⁶This has been my practice:
    I obey your precepts.^(AN)

Gifts for Building the Temple

29 Then King David said to the whole assembly: “My son Solomon, the one whom God has chosen, is young and inexperienced.^(A) The task is great, because this palatial structure is not for man but for the Lord God. ²With all my resources I have provided for the temple of my God—gold^(B) for the gold work, silver for the silver, bronze for the bronze, iron for the iron and wood for the wood, as well as onyx for the settings, turquoise,^[a]^(C) stones of various colors, and all kinds of fine stone and marble—all of these in large quantities.^(D) ³Besides, in my devotion to the temple of my God I now give my personal treasures of gold and silver for the temple of my God, over and above everything I have provided^(E) for this holy temple: ⁴three thousand talents^[b] of gold (gold of Ophir)^(F) and seven thousand talents^[c] of refined silver,^(G) for the overlaying of the walls of the buildings, ⁵for the gold work and the silver work, and for all the work to be done by the craftsmen. Now, who is willing to consecrate themselves to the Lord today?”

⁶Then the leaders of families, the officers of the tribes of Israel, the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds, and the officials^(H) in charge of the king’s work gave willingly.^(I) ⁷They^(J) gave toward the work on the temple of God five thousand talents^[d] and ten thousand darics^[e] of gold, ten thousand talents^[f] of silver, eighteen thousand talents^[g] of bronze and a hundred thousand talents^[h] of iron. ⁸Anyone who had precious stones^(K) gave them to the treasury of the temple of the Lord in the custody of Jehiel the Gershonite.^(L) ⁹The people rejoiced at the willing response of their leaders, for they had given freely and wholeheartedly^(M) to the Lord. David the king also rejoiced greatly.

The Authority of Jesus Questioned^(A)

²⁷They arrived again in Jerusalem, and while Jesus was walking in the temple courts, the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders came to him. ²⁸“By what authority are you doing these things?” they asked. “And who gave you authority to do this?”

²⁹Jesus replied, “I will ask you one question. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. ³⁰John’s baptism—was it from heaven, or of human origin? Tell me!”

³¹They discussed it among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will ask, ‘Then why didn’t you believe him?’ ³²But if we say, ‘Of human origin’ …” (They feared the people, for everyone held that John really was a prophet.)^(B)

³³So they answered Jesus, “We don’t know.”

Jesus said, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.”
