It is the same now. There are a few people that God has chosen by his grace. And if God chose them by grace, then it is not for the things they have done. If they could be made God’s people by what they did, then God’s gift of grace would not really be a gift.

So this is what has happened: The people of Israel tried to be right with God. But they did not succeed. But the ones God chose did become right with him. The others became hard and refused to listen to God.

So too, at the present time there is a remnant(A) chosen by grace.(B) And if by grace, then it cannot be based on works;(C) if it were, grace would no longer be grace.

What then? What the people of Israel sought so earnestly they did not obtain.(D) The elect among them did, but the others were hardened,(E)

Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.

And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then it is no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.

What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for; but the election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded.
