All the World Guilty

Then what [a]advantage does the Jew have? Or what is the benefit of circumcision? Great in every respect. First, that (A)they were entrusted with the (B)actual words of God. What then? If (C)some [b]did not believe, their [c]unbelief will not nullify the faithfulness of God, will it? [d](D)Far from it! Rather, God must prove to be true, though every person be found (E)a liar, as it is written:

(F)So that You are justified in Your words,
And prevail [e]when You are judged.”

But if our unrighteousness [f](G)demonstrates the righteousness of God, (H)what shall we say? The God who inflicts wrath is not unrighteous, is He? ((I)I am speaking from a human viewpoint.) (J)Far from it! For otherwise, how will (K)God judge the world? But if through my lie (L)the truth of God abounded to His glory, (M)why am I also still being judged as a sinner? And why not say (just as we are slanderously reported and as some claim that we say), “(N)Let’s do evil that good may come of it”? [g]Their condemnation is deserved.

What then? [h](O)Are we better than they? Not at all; for we have already charged that both (P)Jews and (Q)Greeks are (R)all under sin; 10 as it is written:

(S)There is no righteous person, not even one;
11 There is no one who understands,
There is no one who seeks out God;
12 They have all turned aside, together they have become [i]corrupt;
There is no one who does good,
There is not even one.”
13 (T)Their throat is an open grave,
With their tongues they keep deceiving,”
(U)The venom of [j]asps is under their lips”;
14 (V)Their mouth is full of cursing and bitterness”;
15 (W)Their feet are swift to shed blood,
16 Destruction and misery are in their paths,
17 And they have not known the way of peace.”
18 (X)There is no fear of God before their eyes.”

19 Now we know that whatever the (Y)Law says, it speaks to (Z)those who are [k]under the Law, so that every mouth may be closed and (AA)all the world may become accountable to God; 20 because (AB)by the works [l]of the Law [m]none of mankind will be justified in His sight; for [n](AC)through the Law comes [o]knowledge of sin.

Justification by Faith

21 But now apart [p]from the Law (AD)the righteousness of God has been revealed, being (AE)witnessed by the [q]Law and the Prophets, 22 but it is the (AF)righteousness of God through (AG)faith (AH)in Jesus Christ for (AI)all those [r]who believe; for (AJ)there is no distinction, 23 for all [s](AK)have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 being justified as a gift (AL)by His grace through (AM)the redemption which is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God displayed publicly as (AN)a [t]propitiation [u](AO)in His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness, [v]because in God’s merciful (AP)restraint He (AQ)let the sins previously committed go unpunished; 26 for the demonstration, that is, of His righteousness at the present time, so that He would be just and the justifier of the one who [w]has faith in Jesus.

27 Where then is (AR)boasting? It has been excluded. By (AS)what kind of law? Of works? No, but by a law of faith. 28 [x]For (AT)we maintain that a person is justified by faith apart from works [y]of the Law. 29 Or (AU)is God the God of Jews only? Is He not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also, 30 since indeed (AV)God (AW)who will justify the [z]circumcised [aa]by faith and the [ab]uncircumcised through faith (AX)is one.

31 Do we then nullify [ac]the Law through faith? (AY)Far from it! On the contrary, we (AZ)establish the Law.

Abraham’s Justification by Faith

What then shall we say that Abraham, [ad]our forefather (BA)according to the flesh, has found? For if Abraham was justified [ae]by works, he has something to boast about; but (BB)not [af]before God. For what does the Scripture say? “(BC)Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.” Now to the one who (BD)works, the wages are not credited as a favor, but as what is due. But to the one who does not work, but (BE)believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness, just as David also speaks of the blessing of the person to whom God credits righteousness apart from works:

(BF)Blessed are those whose lawless deeds have been forgiven,
And whose sins have been covered.
(BG)Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will not (BH)take into account.”

Is this blessing then on [ag](BI)the circumcised, or on [ah]the uncircumcised also? For (BJ)we say, “(BK)Faith was credited to Abraham as righteousness.” 10 How then was it credited? While he was [ai]circumcised, or [aj]uncircumcised? Not while [ak]circumcised, but while [al]uncircumcised; 11 and he (BL)received the sign of circumcision, (BM)a seal of the righteousness of the faith which [am]he had while uncircumcised, so that he might be (BN)the father of (BO)all who believe without being circumcised, that righteousness might be credited to them, 12 and the father of circumcision to those who not only are of the circumcision, but who also follow in the steps of the faith of our father Abraham which [an]he had while uncircumcised.

13 For (BP)the promise to Abraham or to his [ao]descendants (BQ)that he would be heir of the world was not [ap]through the Law, but through the righteousness of faith. 14 For (BR)if those who are [aq]of the Law are heirs, then faith is made void and the promise is nullified; 15 for (BS)the Law brings about wrath, but (BT)where there is no law, there also is no violation.

16 For this reason it is [ar]by faith, in order that it may be in accordance with (BU)grace, so that the promise will be guaranteed to (BV)all the [as]descendants, not only to [at]those who are of the Law, but also to [au](BW)those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is (BX)the father of us all, 17 (as it is written: “I have made you (BY)a father of many nations”) in the presence of Him whom he believed, that is, God, (BZ)who gives life to the dead and (CA)calls into being (CB)things that do not exist. 18 In hope against hope he believed, so that he might become (CC)a father of many nations according to that which had been spoken, “(CD)So shall your [av]descendants be.” 19 Without becoming weak in faith he contemplated his own body, now (CE)as good as dead since (CF)he was about a hundred years old, and (CG)the deadness of Sarah’s womb; 20 yet, with respect to the promise of God, he did not waver in unbelief but grew strong in faith, (CH)giving glory to God, 21 and (CI)being fully assured that (CJ)what God had promised, He was able also to perform. 22 Therefore (CK)it was also credited to him as righteousness. 23 Now (CL)not for his sake only was it written that it was credited to him, 24 but for our sake also, to whom it will be credited, to us (CM)who believe in Him who (CN)raised Jesus our Lord from the dead, 25 He who was (CO)delivered over because of our wrongdoings, and was (CP)raised because of our justification.

Results of Justification

(CQ)Therefore, having been justified by faith, [aw](CR)we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we also have (CS)obtained our introduction by faith into this grace (CT)in which we stand; and [ax]we celebrate in hope of the glory of God. (CU)And not only this, but [ay]we also (CV)celebrate in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about (CW)perseverance; and (CX)perseverance, (CY)proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope (CZ)does not disappoint, because the love of God has been (DA)poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

For while we were still (DB)helpless, (DC)at the right time (DD)Christ died for the ungodly. For one will hardly die for a righteous person; [az]though perhaps for the good person someone would even dare to die. But God (DE)demonstrates (DF)His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, (DG)Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified [ba](DH)by His blood, we shall be saved (DI)from the wrath of God through Him. 10 For if while we were (DJ)enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved [bb](DK)by His life. 11 (DL)And not only this, but [bc]we also celebrate in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received (DM)the reconciliation.

12 Therefore, just as through (DN)one man sin entered into the world, and (DO)death through sin, and (DP)so death spread to all mankind, because all sinned— 13 for [bd]until the Law sin was in the world, but (DQ)sin is not [be]counted against anyone when there is no law. 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who had not sinned (DR)in the likeness of the [bf]violation committed by Adam, who is a [bg](DS)type of Him who was to come.

15 But [bh]the gracious gift is not like the offense. For if by the offense of (DT)the one (DU)the many died, much more did the grace of God and the gift by (DV)the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. 16 The gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned; for on the one hand (DW)the judgment arose from one offense, [bi]resulting in condemnation, but on the other hand the gracious gift arose from many offenses, [bj]resulting in justification. 17 For if by the offense of the one, death reigned (DX)through the one, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness (DY)reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.

18 So then, as through (DZ)one offense [bk]the result was condemnation to all mankind, so also through one (EA)act of righteousness [bl]the result was (EB)justification of life to all mankind. 19 For as through the one man’s disobedience (EC)the many (ED)were made sinners, so also through (EE)the obedience of the One (EF)the many will be made righteous. 20 [bm](EG)The Law came in so that the offense would increase; but where sin increased, (EH)grace abounded all the more, 21 so that, as (EI)sin reigned in death, so also (EJ)grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Believers Are Dead to Sin, Alive to God

(EK)What shall we say then? Are we to (EL)continue in sin so that grace may increase? [bn](EM)Far from it! How shall we who (EN)died to sin still live in it? Or do you not know that all of us who have been (EO)baptized into (EP)Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? Therefore we have been (EQ)buried with Him through baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was (ER)raised from the dead through the (ES)glory of the Father, so we too may walk in (ET)newness of life. For (EU)if we have become [bo]united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be [bp]in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our (EV)old [bq]self was (EW)crucified with Him, in order that our (EX)body of sin might be [br]done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; for (EY)the one who has died is [bs]freed from sin.

Now (EZ)if we have died with Christ, we believe that (FA)we shall also live with Him, knowing that Christ, having been (FB)raised from the dead, [bt]is never to die again; (FC)death no longer is master over Him. 10 For [bu]the death that He died, He died to sin once for all time; but [bv]the life that He lives, He lives to [bw]God. 11 So you too, consider yourselves to be (FD)dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus.

12 Therefore sin is not to (FE)reign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts, 13 and do not go on (FF)presenting [bx]the parts of your body to sin as [by]instruments of unrighteousness; but (FG)present yourselves to God as those who are alive from the dead, and [bz]your body’s parts as [ca]instruments of righteousness for God. 14 For (FH)sin shall not (FI)be master over you, for (FJ)you are not under [cb]the Law but (FK)under grace.

15 What then? (FL)Are we to sin because we are not under [cc]the Law but under grace? [cd](FM)Far from it! 16 Do you not (FN)know that the one to whom you present yourselves as (FO)slaves for obedience, you are slaves of that same one whom you obey, either of (FP)sin [ce]resulting in death, or of obedience [cf]resulting in righteousness? 17 But (FQ)thanks be to God that [cg]though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that [ch](FR)form of teaching to which you were entrusted, 18 and after being (FS)freed from sin, you became slaves to righteousness. 19 (FT)I am speaking [ci]in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just (FU)as you presented [cj]the parts of your body as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness, [ck]resulting in further lawlessness, so now present [cl]your body’s parts as slaves to righteousness, [cm]resulting in sanctification.

20 For (FV)when you were slaves of sin, you were free in relation to righteousness. 21 Therefore what [cn](FW)benefit were you then [co]deriving from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the outcome of those things is (FX)death. 22 But now having been (FY)freed from sin and (FZ)enslaved to God, you [cp]derive your [cq](GA)benefit, [cr]resulting in sanctification, and (GB)the outcome, eternal life. 23 For the wages of (GC)sin is death, but the gracious gift of God is (GD)eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Believers United to Christ

Or do you not know, (GE)brothers and sisters (for I am speaking to those who know the [cs]Law), that the [ct]Law has jurisdiction over a person as long as he lives? For (GF)the married woman is bound by law to her [cu]husband as long as he is alive; but if her husband dies, she is released from the law [cv]concerning the husband. So then, if while her husband is alive she [cw]gives herself to another man, she will be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from the law, so that she is not an adulteress if she [cx]gives herself to another man.

Therefore, my brothers and sisters, you also were (GG)put to death (GH)in regard to the Law (GI)through the body of Christ, so that you might belong to another, to Him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God. For while we were (GJ)in the flesh, the sinful passions, which were (GK)brought to light by the Law, were at work (GL)in [cy]the parts of our body to bear fruit for death. But now we have been (GM)released from the Law, having (GN)died to that by which we were bound, so that we serve in (GO)newness of (GP)the [cz]Spirit and not in oldness of the letter.

(GQ)What shall we say then? Is the Law sin? (GR)[da]Far from it! On the contrary, (GS)I would not have come to know sin except [db]through the Law; for I would not have known about [dc]coveting if the Law had not said, “(GT)You shall not [dd]covet.” But sin, (GU)taking an opportunity (GV)through the commandment, produced in me [de]coveting of every kind; for (GW)apart [df]from the Law sin is dead. I was once alive apart [dg]from the Law; but when the commandment came, sin came to life, and I died; 10 and this commandment, which was [dh](GX)to result in life, proved [di]to result in death for me; 11 for sin, (GY)taking an opportunity (GZ)through the commandment, (HA)deceived me, and through it, killed me. 12 (HB)So then, the Law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.

13 Therefore did that which is good become a cause of death for me? [dj](HC)Far from it! Rather it was sin, in order that it might be shown to be sin by bringing about my death through that which is good, so that through the commandment sin would become utterly sinful.

The Conflict of Serving Two Masters

14 For we know that the Law is (HD)spiritual, but I am (HE)fleshly, (HF)sold [dk](HG)into bondage to sin. 15 For (HH)I do not understand what I am doing; for I am not practicing (HI)what I want to do, but I do the very thing I hate. 16 However, if I do the very thing I do not want to do, I agree with (HJ)the Law, that the Law is good. 17 But now, (HK)no longer am I the one doing it, but sin that dwells in me. 18 For I know that good does not dwell in me, that is, in my (HL)flesh; for the willing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not. 19 For (HM)the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want. 20 But if I do the very thing I do not want, (HN)I am no longer the one doing it, but sin that dwells in me.

21 I find then (HO)the [dl]principle that evil is present in me, the one who wants to do good. 22 For I joyfully agree with the law of God [dm]in (HP)the inner person, 23 but I see (HQ)a different law in [dn]the parts of my body waging war against the (HR)law of my mind, and making me a prisoner [do]of (HS)the law of sin, the law which is in [dp]my body’s parts. 24 Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from [dq](HT)the body of this (HU)death? 25 (HV)Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the law of God, but on the other, with my flesh (HW)the law of sin.

Deliverance from Bondage

Therefore there is now no (HX)condemnation at all for those who are (HY)in (HZ)Christ Jesus. For (IA)the law of the Spirit of life [dr]in (IB)Christ Jesus (IC)has set you free from the law of sin and of death. For (ID)what the Law could not do, [ds](IE)weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in (IF)the likeness of [dt]sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, so that the (IG)requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us who (IH)do not walk [du]according to the flesh but [dv]according to the Spirit. For those who are in accord with the flesh set their minds on (II)the things of the flesh, but those who are in accord with the Spirit, (IJ)the things of the Spirit. (IK)For the mind [dw]set on the flesh is (IL)death, but the mind [dx]set on the Spirit is life and peace, because the mind [dy]set on the flesh is (IM)hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so, and those who are (IN)in the flesh cannot please God.

However, you are not (IO)in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God (IP)dwells in you. But (IQ)if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. 10 (IR)If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is [dz]alive because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of Him who (IS)raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, (IT)He who raised (IU)Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies [ea]through His Spirit who dwells in you.

12 So then, brothers and sisters, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh— 13 for (IV)if you are living in accord with the flesh, you are going to die; but if by the Spirit you are (IW)putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For all who are (IX)being led by the Spirit of God, these are (IY)sons and daughters of God. 15 For you (IZ)have not received a spirit of slavery [eb]leading to fear again, but you (JA)have received [ec]a spirit of adoption as sons and daughters by which we cry out, “(JB)Abba! [ed]Father!” 16 The Spirit Himself (JC)testifies with our spirit that we are (JD)children of God, 17 and if children, (JE)heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, (JF)if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.

18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time (JG)are not worthy to be compared with the (JH)glory that is to be revealed to us. 19 For the (JI)eagerly awaiting creation waits for (JJ)the revealing of the (JK)sons and daughters of God. 20 For the creation (JL)was subjected to (JM)futility, not willingly, but (JN)because of Him who subjected it, [ee]in hope 21 that (JO)the creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation (JP)groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now. 23 (JQ)And not only that, but also we ourselves, having (JR)the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves (JS)groan within ourselves, (JT)waiting eagerly for our adoption as sons and daughters, (JU)the redemption of our body. 24 For (JV)in hope we have been saved, but (JW)hope that is seen is not hope; for who hopes for what he already sees? 25 But (JX)if we hope for what we do not see, through perseverance we wait eagerly for it.

Our Victory in Christ

26 Now in the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for (JY)we do not know what to pray for as we should, but (JZ)the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with [ef]groanings too deep for words; 27 and (KA)He who searches the hearts knows what (KB)the mind of the Spirit is, because He (KC)intercedes for the [eg]saints according to the will of God.

28 And we know that [eh]God [ei]causes (KD)all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are (KE)called according to His purpose. 29 For those whom He (KF)foreknew, He also (KG)predestined to become (KH)conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the (KI)firstborn among many brothers and sisters; 30 and these whom He (KJ)predestined, He also (KK)called; and these whom He called, He also (KL)justified; and these whom He justified, He also (KM)glorified.

31 (KN)What then shall we say to these things? (KO)If God is for us, who is against us? 32 He who (KP)did not spare His own Son, but (KQ)delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things? 33 Who will bring charges against (KR)God’s elect? (KS)God is the one who justifies; 34 who is the one who (KT)condemns? Christ Jesus is He who (KU)died, but rather, was [ej](KV)raised, who is (KW)at the right hand of God, who also (KX)intercedes for us. 35 Who will separate us from (KY)the love of [ek]Christ? Will (KZ)tribulation, or trouble, or (LA)persecution, or (LB)famine, or (LC)nakedness, or (LD)danger, or sword? 36 Just as it is written:

(LE)For Your sake we are killed all day long;
We were regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.”

37 But in all these things we overwhelmingly (LF)conquer through (LG)Him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither (LH)death, nor life, nor (LI)angels, nor principalities, nor (LJ)things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from (LK)the love of God that is (LL)in Christ Jesus our Lord.

God’s Faithfulness

What advantage, then, is there in being a Jew, or what value is there in circumcision? Much in every way!(A) First of all, the Jews have been entrusted with the very words of God.(B)

What if some were unfaithful?(C) Will their unfaithfulness nullify God’s faithfulness?(D) Not at all! Let God be true,(E) and every human being a liar.(F) As it is written:

“So that you may be proved right when you speak
    and prevail when you judge.”[a](G)

But if our unrighteousness brings out God’s righteousness more clearly,(H) what shall we say? That God is unjust in bringing his wrath on us? (I am using a human argument.)(I) Certainly not! If that were so, how could God judge the world?(J) Someone might argue, “If my falsehood enhances God’s truthfulness and so increases his glory,(K) why am I still condemned as a sinner?”(L) Why not say—as some slanderously claim that we say—“Let us do evil that good may result”?(M) Their condemnation is just!

No One Is Righteous

What shall we conclude then? Do we have any advantage?(N) Not at all! For we have already made the charge that Jews and Gentiles alike are all under the power of sin.(O) 10 As it is written:

“There is no one righteous, not even one;
11     there is no one who understands;
    there is no one who seeks God.
12 All have turned away,
    they have together become worthless;
there is no one who does good,
    not even one.”[b](P)
13 “Their throats are open graves;
    their tongues practice deceit.”[c](Q)
“The poison of vipers is on their lips.”[d](R)
14     “Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.”[e](S)
15 “Their feet are swift to shed blood;
16     ruin and misery mark their ways,
17 and the way of peace they do not know.”[f](T)
18     “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”[g](U)

19 Now we know that whatever the law says,(V) it says to those who are under the law,(W) so that every mouth may be silenced(X) and the whole world held accountable to God.(Y) 20 Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law;(Z) rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.(AA)

Righteousness Through Faith

21 But now apart from the law the righteousness of God(AB) has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify.(AC) 22 This righteousness(AD) is given through faith(AE) in[h] Jesus Christ(AF) to all who believe.(AG) There is no difference between Jew and Gentile,(AH) 23 for all have sinned(AI) and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and all are justified(AJ) freely by his grace(AK) through the redemption(AL) that came by Christ Jesus. 25 God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement,[i](AM) through the shedding of his blood(AN)—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished(AO) 26 he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.

27 Where, then, is boasting?(AP) It is excluded. Because of what law? The law that requires works? No, because of the law that requires faith. 28 For we maintain that a person is justified by faith apart from the works of the law.(AQ) 29 Or is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles too? Yes, of Gentiles too,(AR) 30 since there is only one God, who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through that same faith.(AS) 31 Do we, then, nullify the law by this faith? Not at all! Rather, we uphold the law.

Abraham Justified by Faith

What then shall we say(AT) that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh,(AU) discovered in this matter? If, in fact, Abraham was justified by works, he had something to boast about—but not before God.(AV) What does Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.”[j](AW)

Now to the one who works, wages are not credited as a gift(AX) but as an obligation. However, to the one who does not work but trusts God who justifies the ungodly, their faith is credited as righteousness.(AY) David says the same thing when he speaks of the blessedness of the one to whom God credits righteousness apart from works:

“Blessed are those
    whose transgressions are forgiven,
    whose sins are covered.
Blessed is the one
    whose sin the Lord will never count against them.”[k](AZ)

Is this blessedness only for the circumcised, or also for the uncircumcised?(BA) We have been saying that Abraham’s faith was credited to him as righteousness.(BB) 10 Under what circumstances was it credited? Was it after he was circumcised, or before? It was not after, but before! 11 And he received circumcision as a sign, a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised.(BC) So then, he is the father(BD) of all who believe(BE) but have not been circumcised, in order that righteousness might be credited to them. 12 And he is then also the father of the circumcised who not only are circumcised but who also follow in the footsteps of the faith that our father Abraham had before he was circumcised.

13 It was not through the law that Abraham and his offspring received the promise(BF) that he would be heir of the world,(BG) but through the righteousness that comes by faith.(BH) 14 For if those who depend on the law are heirs, faith means nothing and the promise is worthless,(BI) 15 because the law brings wrath.(BJ) And where there is no law there is no transgression.(BK)

16 Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so that it may be by grace(BL) and may be guaranteed(BM) to all Abraham’s offspring—not only to those who are of the law but also to those who have the faith of Abraham. He is the father of us all.(BN) 17 As it is written: “I have made you a father of many nations.”[l](BO) He is our father in the sight of God, in whom he believed—the God who gives life(BP) to the dead and calls(BQ) into being things that were not.(BR)

18 Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations,(BS) just as it had been said to him, “So shall your offspring be.”[m](BT) 19 Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead(BU)—since he was about a hundred years old(BV)—and that Sarah’s womb was also dead.(BW) 20 Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened(BX) in his faith and gave glory to God,(BY) 21 being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised.(BZ) 22 This is why “it was credited to him as righteousness.”(CA) 23 The words “it was credited to him” were written not for him alone, 24 but also for us,(CB) to whom God will credit righteousness—for us who believe in him(CC) who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead.(CD) 25 He was delivered over to death for our sins(CE) and was raised to life for our justification.(CF)

Peace and Hope

Therefore, since we have been justified(CG) through faith,(CH) we[n] have peace(CI) with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,(CJ) through whom we have gained access(CK) by faith into this grace in which we now stand.(CL) And we[o] boast in the hope(CM) of the glory of God. Not only so, but we[p] also glory in our sufferings,(CN) because we know that suffering produces perseverance;(CO) perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope(CP) does not put us to shame, because God’s love(CQ) has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit,(CR) who has been given to us.

You see, at just the right time,(CS) when we were still powerless,(CT) Christ died for the ungodly.(CU) Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.(CV)

Since we have now been justified(CW) by his blood,(CX) how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath(CY) through him! 10 For if, while we were God’s enemies,(CZ) we were reconciled(DA) to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!(DB) 11 Not only is this so, but we also boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.(DC)

Death Through Adam, Life Through Christ

12 Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man,(DD) and death through sin,(DE) and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned(DF)

13 To be sure, sin was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not charged against anyone’s account where there is no law.(DG) 14 Nevertheless, death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin by breaking a command, as did Adam,(DH) who is a pattern of the one to come.(DI)

15 But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man,(DJ) how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ,(DK) overflow to the many! 16 Nor can the gift of God be compared with the result of one man’s sin: The judgment followed one sin and brought condemnation, but the gift followed many trespasses and brought justification. 17 For if, by the trespass of the one man, death(DL) reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life(DM) through the one man, Jesus Christ!

18 Consequently, just as one trespass resulted in condemnation for all people,(DN) so also one righteous act resulted in justification(DO) and life(DP) for all people. 19 For just as through the disobedience of the one man(DQ) the many were made sinners,(DR) so also through the obedience(DS) of the one man the many will be made righteous.

20 The law was brought in so that the trespass might increase.(DT) But where sin increased, grace increased all the more,(DU) 21 so that, just as sin reigned in death,(DV) so also grace(DW) might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life(DX) through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Dead to Sin, Alive in Christ

What shall we say, then?(DY) Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase?(DZ) By no means! We are those who have died to sin;(EA) how can we live in it any longer? Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized(EB) into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death(EC) in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead(ED) through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.(EE)

For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his.(EF) For we know that our old self(EG) was crucified with him(EH) so that the body ruled by sin(EI) might be done away with,[q] that we should no longer be slaves to sin(EJ) because anyone who has died has been set free from sin.(EK)

Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him.(EL) For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead,(EM) he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him.(EN) 10 The death he died, he died to sin(EO) once for all;(EP) but the life he lives, he lives to God.

11 In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin(EQ) but alive to God in Christ Jesus. 12 Therefore do not let sin reign(ER) in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. 13 Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness,(ES) but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness.(ET) 14 For sin shall no longer be your master,(EU) because you are not under the law,(EV) but under grace.(EW)

Slaves to Righteousness

15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law but under grace?(EX) By no means! 16 Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey(EY)—whether you are slaves to sin,(EZ) which leads to death,(FA) or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? 17 But thanks be to God(FB) that, though you used to be slaves to sin,(FC) you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching(FD) that has now claimed your allegiance. 18 You have been set free from sin(FE) and have become slaves to righteousness.(FF)

19 I am using an example from everyday life(FG) because of your human limitations. Just as you used to offer yourselves as slaves to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer yourselves as slaves to righteousness(FH) leading to holiness. 20 When you were slaves to sin,(FI) you were free from the control of righteousness.(FJ) 21 What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death!(FK) 22 But now that you have been set free from sin(FL) and have become slaves of God,(FM) the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life.(FN) 23 For the wages of sin is death,(FO) but the gift of God is eternal life(FP) in[r] Christ Jesus our Lord.

Released From the Law, Bound to Christ

Do you not know, brothers and sisters(FQ)—for I am speaking to those who know the law—that the law has authority over someone only as long as that person lives? For example, by law a married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is alive, but if her husband dies, she is released from the law that binds her to him.(FR) So then, if she has sexual relations with another man while her husband is still alive, she is called an adulteress.(FS) But if her husband dies, she is released from that law and is not an adulteress if she marries another man.

So, my brothers and sisters, you also died to the law(FT) through the body of Christ,(FU) that you might belong to another,(FV) to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God. For when we were in the realm of the flesh,[s](FW) the sinful passions aroused by the law(FX) were at work in us,(FY) so that we bore fruit for death.(FZ) But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law(GA) so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.(GB)

The Law and Sin

What shall we say, then?(GC) Is the law sinful? Certainly not!(GD) Nevertheless, I would not have known what sin was had it not been for the law.(GE) For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.”[t](GF) But sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment,(GG) produced in me every kind of coveting. For apart from the law, sin was dead.(GH) Once I was alive apart from the law; but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died. 10 I found that the very commandment that was intended to bring life(GI) actually brought death. 11 For sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment,(GJ) deceived me,(GK) and through the commandment put me to death. 12 So then, the law is holy, and the commandment is holy, righteous and good.(GL)

13 Did that which is good, then, become death to me? By no means! Nevertheless, in order that sin might be recognized as sin, it used what is good(GM) to bring about my death,(GN) so that through the commandment sin might become utterly sinful.

14 We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual,(GO) sold(GP) as a slave to sin.(GQ) 15 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.(GR) 16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good.(GS) 17 As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me.(GT) 18 For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature.[u](GU) For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing.(GV) 20 Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.(GW)

21 So I find this law at work:(GX) Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. 22 For in my inner being(GY) I delight in God’s law;(GZ) 23 but I see another law at work in me, waging war(HA) against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin(HB) at work within me. 24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?(HC) 25 Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!(HD)

So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law,(HE) but in my sinful nature[v] a slave to the law of sin.(HF)

Life Through the Spirit

Therefore, there is now no condemnation(HG) for those who are in Christ Jesus,(HH) because through Christ Jesus(HI) the law of the Spirit who gives life(HJ) has set you[w] free(HK) from the law of sin(HL) and death. For what the law was powerless(HM) to do because it was weakened by the flesh,[x](HN) God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh(HO) to be a sin offering.[y](HP) And so he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement(HQ) of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.(HR)

Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires;(HS) but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.(HT) The mind governed by the flesh is death,(HU) but the mind governed by the Spirit is life(HV) and peace. The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God;(HW) it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. Those who are in the realm of the flesh(HX) cannot please God.

You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh(HY) but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you.(HZ) And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ,(IA) they do not belong to Christ. 10 But if Christ is in you,(IB) then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life[z] because of righteousness. 11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead(IC) is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies(ID) because of[aa] his Spirit who lives in you.

12 Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation—but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it.(IE) 13 For if you live according to the flesh, you will die;(IF) but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body,(IG) you will live.(IH)

14 For those who are led by the Spirit of God(II) are the children of God.(IJ) 15 The Spirit(IK) you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again;(IL) rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship.[ab] And by him we cry, “Abba,[ac] Father.”(IM) 16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit(IN) that we are God’s children.(IO) 17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs(IP)—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings(IQ) in order that we may also share in his glory.(IR)

Present Suffering and Future Glory

18 I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.(IS) 19 For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God(IT) to be revealed. 20 For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it,(IU) in hope 21 that[ad] the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay(IV) and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God.(IW)

22 We know that the whole creation has been groaning(IX) as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. 23 Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit,(IY) groan(IZ) inwardly as we wait eagerly(JA) for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies.(JB) 24 For in this hope we were saved.(JC) But hope that is seen is no hope at all.(JD) Who hopes for what they already have? 25 But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.(JE)

26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit(JF) himself intercedes for us(JG) through wordless groans. 27 And he who searches our hearts(JH) knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes(JI) for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.

28 And we know that in all things God works for the good(JJ) of those who love him, who[ae] have been called(JK) according to his purpose.(JL) 29 For those God foreknew(JM) he also predestined(JN) to be conformed to the image of his Son,(JO) that he might be the firstborn(JP) among many brothers and sisters. 30 And those he predestined,(JQ) he also called;(JR) those he called, he also justified;(JS) those he justified, he also glorified.(JT)

More Than Conquerors

31 What, then, shall we say in response to these things?(JU) If God is for us,(JV) who can be against us?(JW) 32 He who did not spare his own Son,(JX) but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? 33 Who will bring any charge(JY) against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. 34 Who then is the one who condemns?(JZ) No one. Christ Jesus who died(KA)—more than that, who was raised to life(KB)—is at the right hand of God(KC) and is also interceding for us.(KD) 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?(KE) Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?(KF) 36 As it is written:

“For your sake we face death all day long;
    we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”[af](KG)

37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors(KH) through him who loved us.(KI) 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,[ag] neither the present nor the future,(KJ) nor any powers,(KK) 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God(KL) that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.(KM)
