12 So then, brothers and sisters, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh— 13 for (A)if you are living in accord with the flesh, you are going to die; but if by the Spirit you are (B)putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For all who are (C)being led by the Spirit of God, these are (D)sons and daughters of God. 15 For you (E)have not received a spirit of slavery [a]leading to fear again, but you (F)have received [b]a spirit of adoption as sons and daughters by which we cry out, “(G)Abba! [c]Father!” 16 The Spirit Himself (H)testifies with our spirit that we are (I)children of God, 17 and if children, (J)heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, (K)if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.

18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time (L)are not worthy to be compared with the (M)glory that is to be revealed to us. 19 For the (N)eagerly awaiting creation waits for (O)the revealing of the (P)sons and daughters of God. 20 For the creation (Q)was subjected to (R)futility, not willingly, but (S)because of Him who subjected it, [d]in hope 21 that (T)the creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation (U)groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now. 23 (V)And not only that, but also we ourselves, having (W)the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves (X)groan within ourselves, (Y)waiting eagerly for our adoption as sons and daughters, (Z)the redemption of our body. 24 For (AA)in hope we have been saved, but (AB)hope that is seen is not hope; for who hopes for what he already sees? 25 But (AC)if we hope for what we do not see, through perseverance we wait eagerly for it.

Our Victory in Christ

26 Now in the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for (AD)we do not know what to pray for as we should, but (AE)the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with [e]groanings too deep for words; 27 and (AF)He who searches the hearts knows what (AG)the mind of the Spirit is, because He (AH)intercedes for the [f]saints according to the will of God.

28 And we know that [g]God [h]causes (AI)all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are (AJ)called according to His purpose. 29 For those whom He (AK)foreknew, He also (AL)predestined to become (AM)conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the (AN)firstborn among many brothers and sisters; 30 and these whom He (AO)predestined, He also (AP)called; and these whom He called, He also (AQ)justified; and these whom He justified, He also (AR)glorified.

12 Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation—but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it.(A) 13 For if you live according to the flesh, you will die;(B) but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body,(C) you will live.(D)

14 For those who are led by the Spirit of God(E) are the children of God.(F) 15 The Spirit(G) you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again;(H) rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship.[a] And by him we cry, “Abba,[b] Father.”(I) 16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit(J) that we are God’s children.(K) 17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs(L)—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings(M) in order that we may also share in his glory.(N)

Present Suffering and Future Glory

18 I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.(O) 19 For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God(P) to be revealed. 20 For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it,(Q) in hope 21 that[c] the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay(R) and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God.(S)

22 We know that the whole creation has been groaning(T) as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. 23 Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit,(U) groan(V) inwardly as we wait eagerly(W) for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies.(X) 24 For in this hope we were saved.(Y) But hope that is seen is no hope at all.(Z) Who hopes for what they already have? 25 But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.(AA)

26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit(AB) himself intercedes for us(AC) through wordless groans. 27 And he who searches our hearts(AD) knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes(AE) for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.

28 And we know that in all things God works for the good(AF) of those who love him, who[d] have been called(AG) according to his purpose.(AH) 29 For those God foreknew(AI) he also predestined(AJ) to be conformed to the image of his Son,(AK) that he might be the firstborn(AL) among many brothers and sisters. 30 And those he predestined,(AM) he also called;(AN) those he called, he also justified;(AO) those he justified, he also glorified.(AP)

Children of God Love One Another

See [a](A)how great a love the Father has given us, that we would be called (B)children of God; and in fact we are. For this reason the world does not know us: because (C)it did not know Him. (D)Beloved, now we are (E)children of God, and (F)it has not appeared as yet what we will be. We know that when He (G)appears, we will be (H)like Him, because we will (I)see Him just as He is. And everyone who has this (J)hope set on Him (K)purifies himself, just as He is pure.
