Freed from the Law

7 Or do you not know, brethren (for I speak to those who know the law), that the law ^[a]has dominion over a man as long as he lives? ² For ^(A)the woman who has a husband is bound by the law to her husband as long as he lives. But if the husband dies, she is released from the law of her husband. ³ So then ^(B)if, while her husband lives, she marries another man, she will be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from that law, so that she is no adulteress, though she has married another man. ⁴ Therefore, my brethren, you also have become ^(C)dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you may be married to another—to Him who was raised from the dead, that we should ^(D)bear fruit to God. ⁵ For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions which were aroused by the law ^(E)were at work in our members ^(F)to bear fruit to death. ⁶ But now we have been delivered from the law, having died to what we were held by, so that we should serve ^(G)in the newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter.

²⁰ Therefore ^(A)by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

God’s Righteousness Through Faith

²¹ But now ^(B)the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, ^(C)being witnessed by the Law ^(D)and the Prophets, ²² even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all ^[a]and on all who believe. For ^(E)there is no difference; ²³ for ^(F)all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, ²⁴ being justified ^[b]freely ^(G)by His grace ^(H)through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, ²⁵ whom God set forth ^(I)as a ^[c]propitiation ^(J)by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over ^(K)the sins that were previously committed, ²⁶ to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

²⁸ Therefore we conclude ^(A)that a man is ^[a]justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law.

^12 (A)Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. ¹³ And do not present your ^(B)members as ^[a]instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but ^(C)present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. ¹⁴ For ^(D)sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.

²¹ Is the law then against the promises of God? Certainly not! For if there had been a law given which could have given life, truly righteousness would have been by the law. ²² But the Scripture has confined ^(A)all under sin, ^(B)that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. ²³ But before faith came, we were kept under guard by the law, ^[a]kept for the faith which would afterward be revealed. ²⁴ Therefore ^(C)the law was our ^[b]tutor to bring us to Christ, ^(D)that we might be justified by faith.

²⁵ Then He said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! ^26 (A)Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His ^(B)glory?” ²⁷ And beginning at ^(C)Moses and ^(D)all the Prophets, He ^[a]expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.

^39 (A)You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and ^(B)these are they which testify of Me.

Jesus Promises Another Helper

^15 (A)“If you love Me, ^[a]keep My commandments.

¹⁹ Then ^(A)I will give them one heart, and I will put ^(B)a new spirit within ^[a]them, and take ^(C)the stony heart out of their flesh, and give them a heart of flesh, ^20 (D)that they may walk in My statutes and keep My judgments and do them; ^(E)and they shall be My people, and I will be their God.
