20 Then he ordered his disciples not to tell anyone(A) that he was the Messiah.

Jesus Predicts His Death(B)

21 From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem(C) and suffer many things(D) at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law,(E) and that he must be killed(F) and on the third day(G) be raised to life.(H)

22 Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. “Never, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to you!”

23 Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan!(I) You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”

24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.(J) 25 For whoever wants to save their life[a] will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.(K) 26 What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? 27 For the Son of Man(L) is going to come(M) in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done.(N)

28 “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”

31 He then began to teach them that the Son of Man(C) must suffer many things(D) and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law,(E) and that he must be killed(F) and after three days(G) rise again.(H) 32 He spoke plainly(I) about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.

33 But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. “Get behind me, Satan!”(J) he said. “You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”

The Way of the Cross

34 Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.(K) 35 For whoever wants to save their life[a] will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it.(L) 36 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? 37 Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? 38 If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man(M) will be ashamed of them(N) when he comes(O) in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”

And he said to them, “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see that the kingdom of God has come(P) with power.”(Q)
