The Coming of Zion’s King

¹² Fight the good fight^(A) of the faith. Take hold of^(B) the eternal life^(C) to which you were called when you made your good confession^(D) in the presence of many witnesses. ¹³ In the sight of God, who gives life to everything, and of Christ Jesus, who while testifying before Pontius Pilate^(E) made the good confession,^(F) I charge you^{(G) 14} to keep this command without spot or blame^(H) until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ,^{(I) 15} which God will bring about in his own time^(J)—God, the blessed^(K) and only Ruler,^(L) the King of kings and Lord of lords,^{(M) 16} who alone is immortal^(N) and who lives in unapproachable light,^(O) whom no one has seen or can see.^(P) To him be honor and might forever. Amen.^(Q)

⁹ On that day I will set out to destroy all the nations^(A) that attack Jerusalem.^(B)

Mourning for the One They Pierced

¹⁰ “And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit^[a](C) of grace and supplication.^(D) They will look on^[b] me, the one they have pierced,^(E) and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child,^(F) and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son.^{(G) 11} On that day the weeping^(H) in Jerusalem will be as great as the weeping of Hadad Rimmon in the plain of Megiddo.^(I)

Cleansing From Sin

13 “On that day a fountain^(A) will be opened to the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to cleanse^(B) them from sin and impurity.

The Shepherd Struck, the Sheep Scattered

⁴¹ As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it^{(A) 42} and said, “If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes. ⁴³ The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side.^{(B) 44} They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls.^(C) They will not leave one stone on another,^(D) because you did not recognize the time of God’s coming^(E) to you.”

Jesus at the Temple^(F)

⁴⁵ When Jesus entered the temple courts, he began to drive out those who were selling. ⁴⁶ “It is written,” he said to them, “‘My house will be a house of prayer’^[a];^(G) but you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’^[b]”^(H)

⁴⁷ Every day he was teaching at the temple.^(I) But the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the leaders among the people were trying to kill him.^{(J) 48} Yet they could not find any way to do it, because all the people hung on his words.
