The Ten Commandments

20 (A)And (B)God spoke all these words, saying,

(C)“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

(D)“You shall have no other gods before[a] me.

(E)“You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. (F)You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am (G)a jealous God, (H)visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands[b] of those who love me and keep my commandments.

Know therefore that the Lord your God is God, (A)the faithful God (B)who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations, 10 and (C)repays to their face those who hate him, by destroying them. (D)He will not be slack with one who hates him. He will repay him to his face. 11 (E)You shall therefore be careful to do the commandment and the statutes and the rules that I command you today.

Report from Jerusalem

The words of (A)Nehemiah the son of Hacaliah.

Now it happened in the month of (B)Chislev, (C)in the twentieth year, as I was in (D)Susa the citadel, that (E)Hanani, one of my brothers, came with certain men from Judah. And I asked them concerning the Jews who escaped, who had survived the exile, and concerning Jerusalem. And they said to me, “The remnant there in the province who had survived the exile is in great trouble and (F)shame. (G)The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, (H)and its gates are destroyed by fire.”

Nehemiah's Prayer

As soon as I heard these words I (I)sat down and wept and mourned for days, and I continued fasting and praying before the (J)God of heaven. And I said, “O Lord God of heaven, (K)the great and awesome God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, (L)let your ear be attentive and your eyes open, to hear the prayer of your servant that I now pray before you day and night for the people of Israel your servants, (M)confessing the sins of the people of Israel, which we have sinned against you. Even (N)I and my father's house have sinned. (O)We have acted very corruptly against you and have not kept the commandments, the statutes, and the rules (P)that you commanded your servant Moses. Remember the word that you commanded your servant Moses, saying, ‘If you are unfaithful, (Q)I will scatter you among the peoples, (R)but if you return to me and keep my commandments and do them, (S)though your outcasts are in the uttermost parts of heaven, from there I will gather them and bring them (T)to the place that I have chosen, to make my name dwell there.’ 10 (U)They are your servants and your people, whom you have redeemed by your great power and by your strong hand. 11 O Lord, (V)let your ear be attentive to the prayer of your servant, and to the prayer of your servants who delight to fear your name, and give success to your servant today, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man.”

Now I was (W)cupbearer to the king.

Overcoming the World

(A)Everyone who believes that (B)Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and (C)everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him. (D)By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. For (E)this is the love of God, that we (F)keep his commandments. And (G)his commandments are not burdensome.

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

15 (A)“If you love me, you will (B)keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another (C)Helper,[a] to be with you forever, 17 even (D)the Spirit of truth, (E)whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and (F)will be[b] in you.

18 “I will not leave you as orphans; (G)I will come to you. 19 (H)Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but (I)you will see me. (J)Because I live, you also will live. 20 (K)In that day you will know that (L)I am in my Father, and (M)you in me, and (N)I in you. 21 (O)Whoever has my commandments and (P)keeps them, he it is who loves me. And (Q)he who loves me (R)will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and (S)manifest myself to him.” 22 (T)Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it (U)that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?” 23 Jesus answered him, (V)“If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and (W)we will come to him and (X)make our home with him. 24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And (Y)the word that you hear is not mine but the Father's who sent me.

Christ Our Advocate

My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, (A)we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. (B)He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but (C)also for the sins of the whole world. And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we (D)keep his commandments. Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments (E)is a liar, and (F)the truth is not in him, but whoever (G)keeps his word, in him truly (H)the love of God is perfected. (I)By this we may know that we are in him: whoever says he (J)abides in him (K)ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.

The New Commandment

Beloved, I am writing you (L)no new commandment, but (M)an old commandment (N)that you had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word that you have heard.

See (A)what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called (B)children of God; and so we are. The reason why (C)the world does not know us is that (D)it did not know him. Beloved, we are (E)God's children (F)now, and what we will be (G)has not yet appeared; but we know that (H)when he appears[a] (I)we shall be like him, because (J)we shall see him as he is. And everyone who (K)thus hopes in him (L)purifies himself as he is pure.

And (G)by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us.

Walking in Truth and Love

(A)I rejoiced greatly to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as we were commanded by the Father. And now I ask you, dear lady—(B)not as though I were writing you a new commandment, but the one we have had from the beginning—(C)that we love one another. And (D)this is love, that we walk according to his commandments; this is the commandment, just (E)as you have heard from the beginning, so that you should walk in it.
