Elihu Rebukes Job’s Friends

32 So these three men ceased to answer Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes.(A) Then Elihu son of Barachel the Buzite, of the family of Ram, became angry. He was angry at Job because he justified himself rather than God;(B) he was angry also at Job’s three friends because they had found no answer, though they had declared Job to be in the wrong.[a](C) Now Elihu had waited to speak to Job because they were older than he. But when Elihu saw that there was no answer in the mouths of these three men, he became angry.

Elihu son of Barachel the Buzite answered:

“I am young in years,
    and you are aged;
therefore I was timid and afraid
    to declare my opinion to you.(D)
I said, ‘Let days speak
    and many years teach wisdom.’
But truly it is the spirit in a mortal,
    the breath of the Almighty[b] that makes for understanding.(E)
It is not the old[c] who are wise
    nor the aged who understand what is right.(F)
10 Therefore I say, ‘Listen to me;
    let me also declare my opinion.’

11 “See, I waited for your words;
    I listened for your wise sayings
    while you searched out what to say.(G)
12 I gave you my attention,
    but there was, in fact, no one who confuted Job,
    no one among you who answered his words.
13 Yet do not say, ‘We have found wisdom;
    God may vanquish him, not a human.’(H)
14 He has not directed his words against me,
    and I will not answer him with your speeches.

15 “They are dismayed; they answer no more;
    they have not a word to say.
16 And am I to wait because they do not speak,
    because they stand there and answer no more?
17 I also will give my answer;
    I also will declare my opinion.
18 For I am full of words;
    the spirit within me constrains me.(I)
19 My belly is indeed like wine that has no vent;
    like new wineskins, it is ready to burst.(J)
20 I must speak, so that I may find relief;
    I must open my lips and answer.
21 I will not show partiality to any person
    or use flattery toward anyone.(K)
22 For I do not know how to flatter—
    or my Maker would soon put an end to me!(L)

Elihu Rebukes Job

33 “But now, hear my speech, O Job,
    and listen to all my words.
See, I open my mouth;
    the tongue in my mouth speaks.
My words declare the uprightness of my heart,
    and what my lips know they speak sincerely.(M)
The spirit of God has made me,
    and the breath of the Almighty[d] gives me life.(N)
Answer me, if you can;
    set your words in order before me; take your stand.(O)
See, before God I am as you are;
    I, too, was formed from a piece of clay.
No fear of me need terrify you;
    my pressure will not be heavy on you.(P)

“Surely, you have spoken in my hearing,
    and I have heard the sound of your words.
You say, ‘I am clean, without transgression;
    I am pure, and there is no iniquity in me.(Q)
10 Look, he finds occasions against me;
    he counts me as his enemy;(R)
11 he puts my feet in the stocks
    and watches all my paths.’(S)

12 “But in this you are not right. I will answer you:
    God is greater than any mortal.
13 Why do you contend against him,
    saying, ‘He will answer none of my[e] words’?(T)
14 For God speaks in one way
    and in two, though people do not perceive it.(U)
15 In a dream, in a vision of the night,
    when deep sleep falls on mortals,
    while they slumber on their beds,(V)
16 then he opens their ears
    and terrifies them with warnings,(W)
17 that he may turn them aside from their deeds
    and keep them from pride,
18 to spare their souls from the Pit,
    their lives from traversing the River.
19 They are also chastened with pain upon their beds
    and with continual strife in their bones,(X)
20 so that their lives loathe bread
    and their appetites dainty food.(Y)
21 Their flesh is so wasted away that it cannot be seen,
    and their bones, once invisible, now stick out.(Z)
22 Their souls draw near the Pit
    and their lives to those who bring death.(AA)
23 Then, if there should be for one of them an angel,
    a mediator, one of a thousand,
    one who declares a person upright,(AB)
24 and he is gracious to that person and says,
    ‘Deliver him from going down into the Pit;
    I have found a ransom;(AC)
25 let his flesh become fresh with youth;
    let him return to the days of his youthful vigor,’(AD)
26 then he prays to God and is accepted by him;
    he comes into his presence with joy,
and God[f] repays him for his righteousness.(AE)
27     That person sings to others and says,
‘I sinned and perverted what was right,
    and it was not paid back to me.(AF)
28 He has redeemed my soul from going down to the Pit,
    and my life shall see the light.’(AG)

29 “God indeed does all these things,
    twice, three times, with mortals,(AH)
30 to bring back their souls from the Pit,
    so that they may see the light of life.[g](AI)
31 Pay heed, Job, listen to me;
    be silent, and I will speak.
32 If you have anything to say, answer me;
    speak, for I desire to justify you.
33 If not, listen to me;
    be silent, and I will teach you wisdom.”(AJ)

Elihu

32 So these three men stopped answering Job,(A) because he was righteous in his own eyes.(B) But Elihu son of Barakel the Buzite,(C) of the family of Ram, became very angry with Job for justifying himself(D) rather than God.(E) He was also angry with the three friends,(F) because they had found no way to refute Job,(G) and yet had condemned him.[a](H) Now Elihu had waited before speaking to Job because they were older than he.(I) But when he saw that the three men had nothing more to say, his anger was aroused.

So Elihu son of Barakel the Buzite said:

“I am young in years,
    and you are old;(J)
that is why I was fearful,
    not daring to tell you what I know.
I thought, ‘Age should speak;
    advanced years should teach wisdom.’(K)
But it is the spirit[b](L) in a person,
    the breath of the Almighty,(M) that gives them understanding.(N)
It is not only the old[c] who are wise,(O)
    not only the aged(P) who understand what is right.(Q)

10 “Therefore I say: Listen to me;(R)
    I too will tell you what I know.(S)
11 I waited while you spoke,
    I listened to your reasoning;
while you were searching for words,
12     I gave you my full attention.
But not one of you has proved Job wrong;
    none of you has answered his arguments.(T)
13 Do not say, ‘We have found wisdom;(U)
    let God, not a man, refute(V) him.’
14 But Job has not marshaled his words against me,(W)
    and I will not answer him with your arguments.

15 “They are dismayed and have no more to say;
    words have failed them.(X)
16 Must I wait, now that they are silent,
    now that they stand there with no reply?
17 I too will have my say;
    I too will tell what I know.(Y)
18 For I am full of words,
    and the spirit(Z) within me compels me;(AA)
19 inside I am like bottled-up wine,
    like new wineskins ready to burst.(AB)
20 I must speak and find relief;
    I must open my lips and reply.(AC)
21 I will show no partiality,(AD)

22 for if I were skilled in flattery,

33 “But now, Job, listen(AH) to my words;
    pay attention to everything I say.(AI)
I am about to open my mouth;
    my words are on the tip of my tongue.
My words come from an upright heart;(AJ)
    my lips sincerely speak what I know.(AK)
The Spirit(AL) of God has made me;(AM)
    the breath of the Almighty(AN) gives me life.(AO)
Answer me(AP) then, if you can;
    stand up(AQ) and argue your case before me.(AR)
I am the same as you in God’s sight;(AS)
    I too am a piece of clay.(AT)
No fear of me should alarm you,
    nor should my hand be heavy on you.(AU)

“But you have said in my hearing—
    I heard the very words—
‘I am pure,(AV) I have done no wrong;(AW)
    I am clean and free from sin.(AX)
10 Yet God has found fault with me;
    he considers me his enemy.(AY)
11 He fastens my feet in shackles;(AZ)
    he keeps close watch on all my paths.’(BA)

12 “But I tell you, in this you are not right,
    for God is greater than any mortal.(BB)
13 Why do you complain to him(BC)
    that he responds to no one’s words[d]?(BD)
14 For God does speak(BE)—now one way, now another(BF)
    though no one perceives it.(BG)
15 In a dream,(BH) in a vision(BI) of the night,(BJ)
    when deep sleep(BK) falls on people
    as they slumber in their beds,
16 he may speak(BL) in their ears
    and terrify them(BM) with warnings,(BN)
17 to turn them from wrongdoing

    with constant distress in their bones,(BT)
20 so that their body finds food(BU) repulsive
    and their soul loathes the choicest meal.(BV)
21 Their flesh wastes away to nothing,
    and their bones,(BW) once hidden, now stick out.(BX)
22 They draw near to the pit,(BY)
    and their life to the messengers of death.[f](BZ)
23 Yet if there is an angel at their side,
    a messenger,(CA) one out of a thousand,
    sent to tell them how to be upright,(CB)
24 and he is gracious to that person and says to God,
    ‘Spare them from going down to the pit;(CC)
    I have found a ransom for them(CD)
25 let their flesh be renewed(CE) like a child’s;
    let them be restored as in the days of their youth’(CF)
26 then that person can pray to God and find favor with him,(CG)
    they will see God’s face and shout for joy;(CH)
    he will restore them to full well-being.(CI)
27 And they will go to others and say,
    ‘I have sinned,(CJ) I have perverted what is right,(CK)
    but I did not get what I deserved.(CL)
28 God has delivered(CM) me from going down to the pit,(CN)
    and I shall live to enjoy the light of life.’(CO)

29 “God does all these things to a person(CP)
    twice, even three times(CQ)
30 to turn them back(CR) from the pit,(CS)
    that the light of life(CT) may shine on them.(CU)

31 “Pay attention, Job, and listen(CV) to me;(CW)
    be silent,(CX) and I will speak.
32 If you have anything to say, answer me;(CY)
    speak up, for I want to vindicate you.(CZ)
33 But if not, then listen to me;(DA)
    be silent,(DB) and I will teach you wisdom.(DC)

Paul and Barnabas in Iconium

14 The same thing occurred in Iconium, where Paul[a] and Barnabas[b] went into the Jewish synagogue and spoke in such a way that a great number of both Jews and Greeks became believers. But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brothers. So they remained for a long time speaking boldly for the Lord, who testified to the word of his grace by granting signs and wonders to be done through them.(A) But the residents of the city were divided: some sided with the Jews, and some with the apostles.(B) And when an attempt was made by both gentiles and Jews, with their rulers, to mistreat them and to stone them,(C) the apostles[c] learned of it and fled to Lystra and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia, and to the surrounding region,(D) and there they continued proclaiming the good news.

Paul and Barnabas in Lystra and Derbe

In Lystra there was a man sitting who could not use his feet and had never walked, for he had been lame from birth.(E) He listened to Paul as he was speaking. And Paul, looking at him intently and seeing that he had faith to be healed,(F) 10 said in a loud voice, “Stand upright on your feet.” And the man[d] sprang up and began to walk. 11 When the crowds saw what Paul had done, they shouted in the Lycaonian language, “The gods have come down to us in human form!”(G) 12 Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul they called Hermes, because he was the chief speaker. 13 The priest of Zeus, whose temple was just outside the city,[e] brought oxen and garlands to the gates; he and the crowds wanted to offer sacrifice. 14 When the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of it, they tore their clothes and rushed out into the crowd, shouting, 15 “People,[f] why are you doing this? We are mortals just like you, and we bring you good news, that you should turn from these worthless things to the living God, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and all that is in them.(H) 16 In past generations he allowed all peoples to follow their own ways,(I) 17 yet he has not left himself without a witness in doing good, giving you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons and filling you with food and your hearts with joy.”(J) 18 Even with these words, they scarcely restrained the crowds from offering sacrifice to them.

19 But Jews came there from Antioch and Iconium and won over the crowds. Then they stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city, supposing that he was dead.(K) 20 But when the disciples surrounded him, he got up and went into the city. The next day he went on with Barnabas to Derbe.(L)

The Return to Antioch in Syria

21 After they had proclaimed the good news to that city and had made many disciples, they returned to Lystra, then on to Iconium and Antioch. 22 There they strengthened the souls of the disciples and encouraged them to continue in the faith, saying, “It is through many persecutions that we must enter the kingdom of God.”(M) 23 And after they had appointed elders for them in each church, with prayer and fasting they entrusted them to the Lord in whom they had come to believe.(N)

24 Then they passed through Pisidia and came to Pamphylia. 25 When they had spoken the word in Perga, they went down to Attalia. 26 From there they sailed back to Antioch, where they had been commended to the grace of God for the work[g] that they had completed.(O) 27 When they arrived, they called the church together and related all that God had done with them and how he had opened a door of faith for the gentiles. 28 And they stayed there with the disciples for some time.

In Iconium

14 At Iconium(A) Paul and Barnabas went as usual into the Jewish synagogue.(B) There they spoke so effectively that a great number(C) of Jews and Greeks believed. But the Jews who refused to believe stirred up the other Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brothers.(D) So Paul and Barnabas spent considerable time there, speaking boldly(E) for the Lord, who confirmed the message of his grace by enabling them to perform signs and wonders.(F) The people of the city were divided; some sided with the Jews, others with the apostles.(G) There was a plot afoot among both Gentiles and Jews,(H) together with their leaders, to mistreat them and stone them.(I) But they found out about it and fled(J) to the Lycaonian cities of Lystra and Derbe and to the surrounding country, where they continued to preach(K) the gospel.(L)

In Lystra and Derbe

In Lystra there sat a man who was lame. He had been that way from birth(M) and had never walked. He listened to Paul as he was speaking. Paul looked directly at him, saw that he had faith to be healed(N) 10 and called out, “Stand up on your feet!”(O) At that, the man jumped up and began to walk.(P)

11 When the crowd saw what Paul had done, they shouted in the Lycaonian language, “The gods have come down to us in human form!”(Q) 12 Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul they called Hermes because he was the chief speaker.(R) 13 The priest of Zeus, whose temple was just outside the city, brought bulls and wreaths to the city gates because he and the crowd wanted to offer sacrifices to them.

14 But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of this, they tore their clothes(S) and rushed out into the crowd, shouting: 15 “Friends, why are you doing this? We too are only human,(T) like you. We are bringing you good news,(U) telling you to turn from these worthless things(V) to the living God,(W) who made the heavens and the earth(X) and the sea and everything in them.(Y) 16 In the past, he let(Z) all nations go their own way.(AA) 17 Yet he has not left himself without testimony:(AB) He has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven and crops in their seasons;(AC) he provides you with plenty of food and fills your hearts with joy.”(AD) 18 Even with these words, they had difficulty keeping the crowd from sacrificing to them.

19 Then some Jews(AE) came from Antioch and Iconium(AF) and won the crowd over. They stoned Paul(AG) and dragged him outside the city, thinking he was dead. 20 But after the disciples(AH) had gathered around him, he got up and went back into the city. The next day he and Barnabas left for Derbe.

The Return to Antioch in Syria

21 They preached the gospel(AI) in that city and won a large number(AJ) of disciples. Then they returned to Lystra, Iconium(AK) and Antioch, 22 strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to remain true to the faith.(AL) “We must go through many hardships(AM) to enter the kingdom of God,” they said. 23 Paul and Barnabas appointed elders[a](AN) for them in each church and, with prayer and fasting,(AO) committed them to the Lord,(AP) in whom they had put their trust. 24 After going through Pisidia, they came into Pamphylia,(AQ) 25 and when they had preached the word in Perga, they went down to Attalia.

26 From Attalia they sailed back to Antioch,(AR) where they had been committed to the grace of God(AS) for the work they had now completed.(AT) 27 On arriving there, they gathered the church together and reported all that God had done through them(AU) and how he had opened a door(AV) of faith to the Gentiles. 28 And they stayed there a long time with the disciples.(AW)
