41 Others said, “This is the Messiah.”[a] But some asked, “Surely the Messiah[b] does not come from Galilee, does he?(A) 42 Has not the scripture said that the Messiah[c] is descended from David and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?”(B) 43 So there was a division in the crowd because of him.

Still others asked, “How can the Messiah come from Galilee?(A) 42 Does not Scripture say that the Messiah will come from David’s descendants(B) and from Bethlehem,(C) the town where David lived?” 43 Thus the people were divided(D) because of Jesus.
