²⁶ Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me,^(A) not because you saw the signs^(B) I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. ²⁷ Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures^(C) to eternal life,^(D) which the Son of Man^(E) will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal^(F) of approval.”

²⁸ Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?”

²⁹ Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe^(G) in the one he has sent.”^(H)

³⁰ So they asked him, “What sign^(I) then will you give that we may see it and believe you?^(J) What will you do? ³¹ Our ancestors ate the manna^(K) in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’^[a]”^(L)

³² Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. ³³ For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven^(M) and gives life to the world.”

³⁴ “Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.”^(N)

³⁵ Then Jesus declared, “I am^(O) the bread of life.^(P) Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes^(Q) in me will never be thirsty.^(R)

18 The Lord said to Moses, ² “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘I am the Lord your God.^{(A) 3} You must not do as they do in Egypt, where you used to live, and you must not do as they do in the land of Canaan, where I am bringing you. Do not follow their practices.^{(B) 4} You must obey my laws^(C) and be careful to follow my decrees.^(D) I am the Lord your God.^{(E) 5} Keep my decrees and laws,^(F) for the person who obeys them will live by them.^(G) I am the Lord.

¹⁰ Therefore I led them out of Egypt and brought them into the wilderness.^{(A) 11} I gave them my decrees and made known to them my laws, by which the person who obeys them will live.^{(B) 12} Also I gave them my Sabbaths^(C) as a sign^(D) between us,^(E) so they would know that I the Lord made them holy.^(F)

¹³ “‘Yet the people of Israel rebelled^(G) against me in the wilderness. They did not follow my decrees but rejected my laws^(H)—by which the person who obeys them will live—and they utterly desecrated my Sabbaths.^(I) So I said I would pour out my wrath^(J) on them and destroy^(K) them in the wilderness.^{(L) 14} But for the sake of my name I did what would keep it from being profaned^(M) in the eyes of the nations in whose sight I had brought them out.^{(N) 15} Also with uplifted hand I swore^(O) to them in the wilderness that I would not bring them into the land I had given them—a land flowing with milk and honey, the most beautiful of all lands^(P)— ¹⁶ because they rejected my laws^(Q) and did not follow my decrees and desecrated my Sabbaths. For their hearts^(R) were devoted to their idols.^{(S) 17} Yet I looked on them with pity and did not destroy^(T) them or put an end to them in the wilderness. ¹⁸ I said to their children in the wilderness, “Do not follow the statutes of your parents^(U) or keep their laws or defile yourselves^(V) with their idols. ¹⁹ I am the Lord your God;^(W) follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.^{(X) 20} Keep my Sabbaths^(Y) holy, that they may be a sign^(Z) between us. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God.^(AA)”
