The Authority of Jesus Challenged

20 ^(A)One day, ^(B)as Jesus^[a] was teaching the people in the temple and preaching the gospel, ^(C)the chief priests and the scribes with the elders came up ²and said to him, “Tell us ^(D)by what authority you do these things, or who it is that gave you this authority.” ³He answered them, “I also will ask you a question. Now tell me, ⁴was the baptism of John ^(E)from heaven or from man?” ⁵And they discussed it with one another, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ^(F)‘Why did you not believe him?’ ⁶But if we say, ‘From man,’ all the people will stone us to death, for they are convinced that John was ^(G)a prophet.” ⁷So they answered that they did not know where it came from. ⁸And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

    whoever guards his way preserves his life.

    and a haughty spirit before a fall.
¹⁹^(C)It is better to be of a lowly spirit with the poor
    than to ^(D)divide the spoil with the proud.
²⁰Whoever gives thought to the word^[a] ^(E)will discover good,
    and blessed is he ^(F)who trusts in the Lord.
²¹The wise of heart is called discerning,
    and sweetness of speech ^(G)increases persuasiveness.
²²Good sense is ^(H)a fountain of life to him who has it,
    but the instruction of fools is folly.
²³^(I)The heart of the wise makes his speech judicious
    and adds persuasiveness to his lips.
²⁴^(J)Gracious words are like ^(K)a honeycomb,
    sweetness to the soul and ^(L)health to the body.
²⁵There is a way that seems right to a man,
    but its end is the way to death.^[b]
²⁶A worker's appetite works for him;
    his ^(M)mouth urges him on.
²⁷^(N)A worthless man plots evil,
    and his speech^[c] is like ^(O)a scorching fire.
²⁸^(P)A dishonest man spreads strife,
    and ^(Q)a whisperer ^(R)separates close friends.
²⁹A man of violence ^(S)entices his neighbor
    and leads him in a way that is not good.
³⁰Whoever winks his eyes plans^[d] ^(T)dishonest things;
    he who ^(U)purses his lips brings evil to pass.
³¹^(V)Gray hair is ^(W)a crown of glory;
    it ^(X)is gained in a righteous life.
³²^(Y)Whoever is slow to anger is better than the mighty,
    and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city.
³³^(Z)The lot is cast into the lap,
    but its every decision is ^(AA)from the Lord.
