Do Not Judge Another

14 Welcome those who are weak in faith[a] but not for the purpose of quarreling over opinions.(A) Some believe in eating anything, while the weak eat only vegetables.(B) Those who eat must not despise those who abstain, and those who abstain must not pass judgment on those who eat, for God has welcomed them. Who are you to pass judgment on slaves of another? It is before their own lord that they stand or fall. And they will be upheld, for the Lord[b] is able to make them stand.

Some judge one day to be better than another, while others judge all days to be alike. Let all be fully convinced in their own minds. Those who observe the day, observe it for the Lord. Also those who eat, eat for the Lord, since they give thanks to God, while those who abstain, abstain for the Lord and give thanks to God.(C)

For we do not live to ourselves, and we do not die to ourselves.(D) If we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord; so then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s. For to this end Christ died and lived again, so that he might be Lord of both the dead and the living.(E)

10 Why do you pass judgment on your brother or sister? Or you, why do you despise your brother or sister? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God.[c](F) 11 For it is written,

“As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me,
    and every tongue shall give praise to[d] God.”(G)

12 So then, each one of us will be held accountable.[e](H)

Do Not Make Another Stumble

13 Let us therefore no longer pass judgment on one another, but resolve instead never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of a brother or sister.(I) 14 I know and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself, but it is unclean for anyone who considers it unclean.(J) 15 If your brother or sister is distressed by what you eat, you are no longer walking in love. Do not let what you eat cause the ruin of one for whom Christ died. 16 So do not let your good be slandered. 17 For the kingdom of God is not food and drink but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.(K) 18 The one who serves Christ in this way is acceptable to God and has human approval.(L) 19 Let us then pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding.(M) 20 Do not, for the sake of food, destroy the work of God. Everything is indeed clean, but it is wrong to make someone stumble by what you eat; 21 it is good not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything that makes your brother or sister stumble.[f](N) 22 Hold the conviction that you have as your own before God. Blessed are those who do not condemn themselves because of what they approve. 23 But those who have doubts are condemned if they eat because they do not act from faith,[g] for whatever does not proceed from faith[h] is sin.[i]

Please Others, Not Yourselves

15 We who are strong ought to put up with the failings of the weak and not to please ourselves.(O) Each of us must please our neighbor for the good purpose of building up the neighbor.(P) For Christ did not please himself, but, as it is written, “The insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.” For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, so that by steadfastness and by the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope.(Q) May the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant you to live in harmony with one another, in accordance with Christ Jesus,(R) so that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The Gospel for Jews and Gentiles Alike

Welcome one another, therefore, just as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God. For I tell you that Christ has become a servant of the circumcised on behalf of the truth of God in order that he might confirm the promises given to the ancestors(S) and that the gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written,

“Therefore I will confess you among the gentiles
    and sing praises to your name”;(T)

10 and again he says,

“Rejoice, O gentiles, with his people”;

11 and again,

“Praise the Lord, all you gentiles,
    and let all the peoples praise him”;

12 and again Isaiah says,

“The root of Jesse shall come,
    the one who rises to rule the gentiles;
in him the gentiles shall hope.”(U)

13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.(V)

Paul’s Reason for Writing So Boldly

14 I myself feel confident about you, my brothers and sisters, that you yourselves are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, and able to instruct one another.(W) 15 Nevertheless, on some points I have written to you rather boldly by way of reminder, because of the grace given me by God(X) 16 to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the gentiles in the priestly service of the gospel of God, so that the offering of the gentiles may be acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit.(Y) 17 In Christ Jesus, then, I have reason to boast of my work for God. 18 For I will not be so bold as to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me to win obedience from the gentiles, by word and deed, 19 by the power of signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit,[j] so that from Jerusalem and as far around as Illyricum I have fully proclaimed the gospel of Christ.(Z) 20 Thus I make it my ambition to proclaim the gospel, not where Christ has already been named, so that I do not build on someone else’s foundation,(AA) 21 but as it is written,

“Those who have never been told of him shall see,
    and those who have never heard of him shall understand.”(AB)

Paul’s Plan to Visit Rome

22 This is the reason that I have so often been hindered from coming to you. 23 But now, with no further place for me in these regions, I desire, as I have for many years, to come to you(AC) 24 when I go to Spain. For I do hope to see you on my journey and to be sent on by you, once I have enjoyed your company for a little while. 25 At present, however, I am going to Jerusalem in a ministry to the saints,(AD) 26 for Macedonia and Achaia were pleased to share their resources with the poor among the saints at Jerusalem.(AE) 27 They were pleased to do this, and indeed they owe it to them, for if the gentiles have come to share in their spiritual blessings, they ought also to be of service to them in material things.(AF) 28 So, when I have completed this and have delivered to them what has been collected,[k] I will set out by way of you to Spain, 29 and I know that when I come to you I will come in the fullness of the blessing[l] of Christ.

30 I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to join me in earnest prayer to God on my behalf,(AG) 31 that I may be rescued from the unbelievers in Judea and that my ministry[m] to Jerusalem may be acceptable to the saints, 32 so that by God’s will I may come to you with joy and be refreshed in your company.(AH) 33 The God of peace be with all of you.[n] Amen.(AI)

16 I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a deacon[o] of the church at Cenchreae,(AJ) so that you may welcome her in the Lord, as is fitting for the saints, and help her in whatever she may require from you, for she has been a benefactor of many and of myself as well.

Greet Prisca and Aquila, my coworkers in Christ Jesus,(AK) who risked their necks for my life, to whom not only I give thanks but also all the churches of the gentiles. Final Instructions

17 I urge you, brothers and sisters, to keep an eye on those who create dissensions and hindrances, in opposition to the teaching that you have learned; avoid them.(AP) 18 For such people do not serve our Lord Christ but their own appetites,[r] and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the simple-minded.(AQ) 19 For your obedience is known to all; therefore, I rejoice over you, but I want you to be wise in what is good and guileless in what is evil.(AR) 20 The God of peace will shortly crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.[s](AS)

21 Timothy, my coworker, greets you; so do Lucius and Jason and Sosipater, my fellow Israelites.(AT)

22 I Tertius, the writer of this letter, greet you in the Lord.[t]

Final Doxology

25 Now to God[v] who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the proclamation of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery that was kept secret for long ages(AV) 26 but is now disclosed and through the prophetic writings is made known to all the gentiles, according to the command of the eternal God, to bring about the obedience of faith(AW) 27 to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever! Amen.[w]

The Weak and the Strong

14 Accept the one whose faith is weak,(A) without quarreling over disputable matters. One person’s faith allows them to eat anything, but another, whose faith is weak, eats only vegetables.(B) The one who eats everything must not treat with contempt(C) the one who does not, and the one who does not eat everything must not judge(D) the one who does, for God has accepted them. Who are you to judge someone else’s servant?(E) To their own master, servants stand or fall. And they will stand, for the Lord is able to make them stand.

One person considers one day more sacred than another;(F) another considers every day alike. Each of them should be fully convinced in their own mind. Whoever regards one day as special does so to the Lord. Whoever eats meat does so to the Lord, for they give thanks to God;(G) and whoever abstains does so to the Lord and gives thanks to God. For none of us lives for ourselves alone,(H) and none of us dies for ourselves alone. If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.(I) For this very reason, Christ died and returned to life(J) so that he might be the Lord of both the dead and the living.(K)

10 You, then, why do you judge your brother or sister[a]? Or why do you treat them with contempt?(L) For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat.(M) 11 It is written:

“‘As surely as I live,’(N) says the Lord,
‘every knee will bow before me;
    every tongue will acknowledge God.’”[b](O)

12 So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God.(P)

13 Therefore let us stop passing judgment(Q) on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister.(R) 14 I am convinced, being fully persuaded in the Lord Jesus, that nothing is unclean in itself.(S) But if anyone regards something as unclean, then for that person it is unclean.(T) 15 If your brother or sister is distressed because of what you eat, you are no longer acting in love.(U) Do not by your eating destroy someone for whom Christ died.(V) 16 Therefore do not let what you know is good be spoken of as evil.(W) 17 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking,(X) but of righteousness, peace(Y) and joy in the Holy Spirit,(Z) 18 because anyone who serves Christ in this way is pleasing to God and receives human approval.(AA)

19 Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace(AB) and to mutual edification.(AC) 20 Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food.(AD) All food is clean,(AE) but it is wrong for a person to eat anything that causes someone else to stumble.(AF) 21 It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything else that will cause your brother or sister to fall.(AG)

22 So whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the one who does not condemn(AH) himself by what he approves. 23 But whoever has doubts(AI) is condemned if they eat, because their eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin.[c]

15 We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak(AJ) and not to please ourselves. May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind(AP) toward each other that Christ Jesus had, so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify(AQ) the God and Father(AR) of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Accept one another,(AS) then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God. For I tell you that Christ has become a servant of the Jews[e](AT) on behalf of God’s truth, so that the promises(AU) made to the patriarchs might be confirmed and, moreover, that the Gentiles(AV) might glorify God(AW) for his mercy. As it is written:

“Therefore I will praise you among the Gentiles;
    I will sing the praises of your name.”[f](AX)

10 Again, it says,

“Rejoice, you Gentiles, with his people.”[g](AY)

11 And again,

“Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles;
    let all the peoples extol him.”[h](AZ)

12 And again, Isaiah says,

13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace(BC) as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.(BD)

Paul the Minister to the Gentiles

14 I myself am convinced, my brothers and sisters, that you yourselves are full of goodness,(BE) filled with knowledge(BF) and competent to instruct one another. 15 Yet I have written you quite boldly on some points to remind you of them again, because of the grace God gave me(BG) 16 to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles.(BH) He gave me the priestly duty of proclaiming the gospel of God,(BI) so that the Gentiles might become an offering(BJ) acceptable to God, sanctified by the Holy Spirit.

17 Therefore I glory in Christ Jesus(BK) in my service to God.(BL) 18 I will not venture to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me in leading the Gentiles(BM) to obey God(BN) by what I have said and done— 19 by the power of signs and wonders,(BO) through the power of the Spirit of God.(BP) So from Jerusalem(BQ) all the way around to Illyricum, I have fully proclaimed the gospel of Christ.(BR) 20 It has always been my ambition to preach the gospel(BS) where Christ was not known, so that I would not be building on someone else’s foundation.(BT) 21 Rather, as it is written:

“Those who were not told about him will see,
    and those who have not heard will understand.”[j](BU)

22 This is why I have often been hindered from coming to you.(BV)

Paul’s Plan to Visit Rome

23 But now that there is no more place for me to work in these regions, and since I have been longing for many years to visit you,(BW) 24 I plan to do so when I go to Spain.(BX) I hope to see you while passing through and to have you assist(BY) me on my journey there, after I have enjoyed your company for a while. 25 Now, however, I am on my way to Jerusalem(BZ) in the service(CA) of the Lord’s people(CB) there. 26 For Macedonia(CC) and Achaia(CD) were pleased to make a contribution for the poor among the Lord’s people in Jerusalem.(CE) 27 They were pleased to do it, and indeed they owe it to them. For if the Gentiles have shared in the Jews’ spiritual blessings, they owe it to the Jews to share with them their material blessings.(CF) 28 So after I have completed this task and have made sure that they have received this contribution, I will go to Spain(CG) and visit you on the way. 29 I know that when I come to you,(CH) I will come in the full measure of the blessing of Christ.

30 I urge you, brothers and sisters, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit,(CI) to join me in my struggle by praying to God for me.(CJ) 31 Pray that I may be kept safe(CK) from the unbelievers in Judea and that the contribution(CL) I take to Jerusalem may be favorably received by the Lord’s people(CM) there, 32 so that I may come to you(CN) with joy, by God’s will,(CO) and in your company be refreshed.(CP) 33 The God of peace(CQ) be with you all.
