Almighty

ALMIGHTY (שַׁדַּי, H8724; παντοκράτωρ, G4120). A name of God found in the OT forty-eight times (thirty-one of these in the Book of Job), either alone or in combination with אֵל׀, H446, “God,” and in the NT nine times (eight of these in the Apocalypse). When combined with ’ēl, it is rendered as “God Almighty” (Gen 28:3). No satisfactory interpretation of the root meaning of the word has been found. One widely accepted theory connects it with the Akkad. word for mountain, which in Akkad. is sometimes used as an epithet of some of the gods. In ancient times the symbol of the mountain often was used to point to the power and majesty of a deity. Exodus 6:2, 3 says that the worship of Jehovah began with Moses, and in the period of the patriarchs God was known as El Shaddai (Gen. 17:1; 28:3; 35:11; 43:14; 48:3; 49:25; Exod 6:3; Num 24:4, 16; Ruth 1:20f.; Job 5:17; Ps 68:14; 91:1; Isa 13:6; Ezek 1:24; Joel 1:15; etc.).
