Amaw

AMAW ā’ mô (עַמֹּ֖ו) The land near the Euphrates River to which Balak, king of Moab, sent to call Balaam to curse Israel. It is mentioned only in Numbers 22:5 (RSV). Here the RSV has “the land of Amaw,” while the KJV and ASV, following the MT and the LXX, have “the land of the children of his people.” Some other important VSS (Vul., Jesh., Samar.) have “the land of the children of Ammon.” Amaw included Pethor, Balaam’s city, and Emar, which was its most important city. The name appears on a number of inscrs. from the 15th and 16th centuries b.c.
