APOCALYPSES, APOCRYPHAL: Purported revelations, given to or by well-known Biblical characters, but excluded from the canon are quite numerous. Such extra-canonical OT apocalypses include the Books of Enoch, the Apocalypse of Baruch, Assumption of Moses, Ascension of Isaiah, 4th Esdras (Vul=2nd Esd, Eng. VS) (cf. ISBE, I, 164ff.). NT apocalypses not canonical include Apocalypse of James, Apocalypse of Peter, Apocalypse of Paul, Apocalypse of Stephen, Apocalypse of Thomas, Apocalypse of the Virgin, Apocalypse of Bartholomew, the Sibylline Oracles. In the Nag Hammadi (Chenoboskion) Gnostic texts are the following: Apocalypse of Dositheus, Apocryphon of John, Apocalypse of Messos, Book of Zostrianos, Allogenos Supreme, Apocalypse of Nicotheos, Apocalypses (2) of James, Apocalypse of Peter, Apocalypse of Paul, all different from those previously mentioned with same names.
