Ar, Ar of Moab

AR, AR OF MOAB är (עָ֣ר מﯴאָ֔ב, LXX ̓Ηρ Μώαβ, meaning uncertain; city of Moab is the strongest possibility). A city E of the Dead Sea. Numbers 21:15 and 28 indicate that Ar is near the Arnon River. The LXX ἕως, G2401, evidently read עַד֮, H6330, in Heb. for it and tr. it with the preposition “until.” At the three places in Deuteronomy 2 where the name occurs (vv. 9, 18, 29), the LXX has Seir. The last occurrence of the word is in Isaiah 15:1, but there the LXX omits the name altogether (as well as the sister city of Kir). If Ar was on the Arnon River then it makes sense in Deuteronomy 2:18 where “boundary” is mentioned in connection with it.

Ar does have the same radical letters as the common Heb. word for city. The suggestion that Ar was the capital city of the Moabites is worth noting.

Numbers 21:15 and Deuteronomy 2:9 and 28 all use Ar in parallel with Moab itself, thus presenting the possibility that this was another term for an area of Moab. The modern site of el-Misna is a plausible suggestion for Ar’s location.
