AREOPAGITE ăr’ ĭ ŏp’ ə jīt, gīt (̓Αρερπαγίτης, member of Areopagus). A member of the Council of the Areopagus (q.v.).
The fact that an Areopagite was converted when Paul preached at Athens (Acts 17:34; see [http://biblegateway/wiki/Dionysius the Areopagite DIONYSIUS]) seems to support the view that Paul addressed the Council, membership of which was restricted and carried with it great prestige.
