ARMENIA är me’ nĭ ə (אֲרָרָֽט, ARARAT, Gen 8:4; Jer 51:27; 2 Kings 19:37 = Isa 37:38 ASV,RSV). An upland region in eastern Asia Minor, earlier occupied by the kingdom of Urartu (see Ararat). The transition in name is illustrated by the (late 6th cent. b.c.) inscr. of Darius at Behistun where the province is named arminiya in the Old Pers. but urašṭu in the Babylonian VS, and the Aram. VS from Elephantine has ’rrṭ. “Armenia” is used only in KJV in 2 Kings 19:37 = Isaiah 37:38, where “Ararat” (for Urartu) is preferable.
