Armory

ARMORY. The tr. in the RSV for a set of Heb. terms, the most common being: בֵּית כֵלִים, “house of weapons” (2 Kings 20:13); בֵ֥ית הָאﯴצָֽר “storehouse” (Jer 50:25); and the difficult term, נֶ֫שֶׁק֒, H5977, which is prob. cognate to Ugaritic n s q, which seems to mean some sort of weapon. Hence, in some contexts the term is tr. “arms,” “armory” (Neh 3:19, et al.). KJV often varies between “armoury” and “arms.” The most difficult term is תַּלְפִּיּﯴת, H9444, “courses, terraces of stone,” used only in Song of Solomon 4:4 and tr. incorrectly by RSV as “arsenal” and KJV as “armoury.” The development of bronze and iron weapons, and the introduction of the horse and chariot in warfare necessitated a specialized division of labor for both armorers and their arsenals. Such a location is the “House of the Forest of Lebanon” (1 Kings 7:2-12; 10:16, 17). Certain arms were stored in the Temple compound (2 Kings 11:10), and in the later days of the commonwealth, arsenals were located around Jerusalem (2 Kings 20:13; Neh 3:19, et al.).
