AZAREL ăz’ ə rĕl (עֲזַרְאֵ֡ל, LXX Οζριεηλ, Εζριηλ; KJV AZAREEL or AZAREAL, Neh 12:36; ESRIL, 1 Esd 9:34; God has helped). Frequently the theophoric elements “yah” and “el” in Heb. names are interchanged, so the name is the same as Azariah. 1. A Korahite soldier who followed David at Ziglag (1 Chron 12:6).

2. Son of Heman, a musician chosen by lot to minister in sanctuary during David’s reign (1 Chron 25:18), also called Uzziel in v. 4 (cf. Azariah also called Uzziah).

3. Son of Jehoram, one of the leaders of the Danites in the days of David (1 Chron 27:22).

4. A son of Binnui (Heb. reads Bani and Bannui, but prob. should emend to read “and from the sons of Binnui”) who married foreign wives (Ezra 10:41; 1 Esd 9:34; KJV ESRIL, ASV, EZRIL).

5. The father of Amashsai, a priest of the family of Immer who came to live in Jerusalem after the Exile (Neh 11:13).

6. A priest who blew the trumpet in procession when wall of Jerusalem was dedicated (Neh 12:36), perhaps identical with # 5.
